Southern water tribe peasant comes from a village that can't even repel one Fire nation scout ship, has laughable architecture, and enough people to not starve for maybe 1 or 2 more years. She comes to the gem of the north, a glorious city with gleaming architecture and robust culture. And she has the nerve to say that she know's better than their greatest waterbending master. I think they know what they're doing and don't need you to tell them how to be woke.

Katara was pretty damn shitty throughout the episode, but it worked in the episodes favor because it was leading up to her being defeated. Yeah she was acting awful, but she was stressed and desperate and insulted, and in the end it didn't matter because he was still the master and easily able to defeat her. What mattered was the emotion of an old man who came to see something in this person he thought lost, and that's really what sold the scene.

In short this episode only worked because it was back then, because they knew that even if it was a spunky young girl it mattered more to the story that she couldn't beat the sexist old man in a straight up fight, and I really respected the character growth they gave him and the reminder to Katara about her limitations they gave her.

It really bugged me that the north in general was sexist because of the basic question of what happened if the Avatar was female? Did they just send Kyoshi and Yangchen to the south to learn, or only taught them healing, or made an exception, or what? He seemed too stringent on this; it'd have been better if his sexism just extended to condescension and he later felt ashamed of treating Kanna's granddaughter that way.

More than likely made an exception. The role of the avatar takes precedence over cultural customs. Otherwise Yangchen would've been bound by Air Nomad values and would've had no kills to her credit, nor would Aang been allowed to marry (granted, there was also nobody around to enforce this) since Air Nomads don't practice monogamy.

There were situations where the team got split up and separated for some reason or another. Katara and the rest needed to be able to fight and defend themselves when that happened, instead of just depend on Aang.

Except she wasn’t because Aang clearly couldn’t do everything by himself. The entire team was necessary, and Katara learned both combat and healing, meaning that Pakku was just a whiny, chauvinist cunt with outdated ideals that were proven wrong.
