Rapunzel is the worst friend to have because she's not inherently malevolent. She's selfish and ignorant of other people's emotions. Traits all sociopaths possess. Varian and Cassandra chose to help her out of their own goodness, traits that Rapunzel exploited for her own benefit while completely unaware of how much it was costing them to care for her.
That's why they couldn't tell her how much of a jerk she is to her face, they felt guilty due to her upbringing so they kept helping her, all while piling up resentment every time she let them down.
Since they were guilt tripped into accepting she wasn't at fault, the anger built up until they exploded and drove them both to insanity. Meanwhile Rapunzel went on her merry way to pursue whatever picks her fancy.
To reach her destiny, she will gladly step on the corpses of her followers, using them to build a stairway to her dream. She will offer her friends and lover to unspeakable horrors on a whim, all while keeping that smile on her face.

Your mistake is assuming Rapunzel and Cassandra are anything but a memeship that's just really exploitable given a lot of circumstances. If you want more of Rapunzel and Eugene's unabashed adoration for each other, this show has it in spades. So much so we circlejerk on how they're the greatest Disney couple quite often. Of course you'd have to watch the show to find that out and you know, form an actual opinion that's somewhat coherent.

Aladdin and Jasmine are quite good also, and A Whole New World is the best romantic song along with I See the Light, but Genie literally stole the spotlight and overshadowed their ship quite a bit. Also their relationship was not developed solidly as Raps & Eugene in Aladdin's sequels & TV show.

'Great' she thought, 'Another illusion.'
As she ventured into the cove, she heard splashing and giggling. She stopped as her foot caught something. A discarded violet dress.
Rapunzel splashed in the shallows, all grins and giggles. She lit up when she saw Cass and charged over to her, shamelessly nude.
"There you are Cass!" She beamed, taking Cass' withered hand. "The water is SO lovely!"
"I-I can't," Cass stammered, her face turning red as she turned away.
"You can't swim? Don't worry, I'll teach you," Rapunzel crooned as she pawed at Cass' shirt. "Let's get this off so it doesn't get WET!"
"Rapunzel, no! St-stop it! You're... YOU AREN'T REAL!"
Rapunzel froze and dropped her hands from Cass's shirt. Slowly, her expression unreadable, she leaned in and softly, so softly kissed her cheek. Her warm breath tickled her ear as she whispered.
"You're a sharp one. I like that,"
Suddenly, Cass was in the palace kitchen, mountains of dirty dishes in front of her. Her shirt was still wet from Rap's hands.
"Cassandra, what are you doing?" Old Lady Crowley voice interrupted her thoughts. "You can't wash dishes with that hand of yours!"
"What? Don't try to trick me, I know you're not-"
"Hush, we've already established that. I'll wash, you dry." She pulled up a stool and put her hands in the suds. Cass robotically picked up a towel.
"Who are you?" She demanded, with all the force she could muster as she wiped a plate she was handed. It the finest china. The Coronation china.
"There are so many names," Crowley mused as she polished a stubborn spot on a salad fork. "But Xhan Tiri will suffice. What is it you want, Cassandra?"
"What?"
"What is it you want out of life? Love, respect, power? Everybody wants something," she crooned as she pulled a sword out of the foam. "I'll dry this one Cass, Lord knows you can't handle swords anymore."

"Try the dagger then," he sneered, his features taking on Fitzherbert's. "That's a woman's weapon. Though I can't tell if you wanna put it in Blondie's back or cut her out of her clothes with it!"
She was back with the caravan, they'd stopped for the night. Fitzherbert and Raps cuddled sickeningly by the fire.
"Envy is a green-eyed monster Cass. All the monsters in your life have green eyes, don't they?" Shorty burbled as he sat up from the dirt.
"I'm not jealous of them!" she spat, turning away from them. They were doing a lot more than cuddling now. She put her hands over her ears to drown out the sounds they made.
"That's not what I said."Shorty slurred, stumbling to sit next to her. Envy is wanting what others have. Jealousy is having something and being afraid to lose it. And you... have nothing to lose."

"Why are you telling me this!?" She snarled at him. "If you expect I'll betray her-"
I EXPECT NOTHING, the voice echoed, shattering the illusion and leaving her in a dark void. "Cass wept and looked at her withered rotted hand with shuddering hatred. BUT KNOW THIS. THE SUNDROP ISNT THE ONLY FORCE THAT CAN ACHIEVE MIRACLES.
Cass caught her breath as her hand burned with a green light. She flexed her fingers and found they moved with an unfamiliar strength.

Dimly, her restored hand felt a knob in it. Turning it, she opened the door and stepped out into the Sunlight

King Frederick and Queen Ariana would have every right to despise and distrust Eugene for his past actions against them, yet they opened their hearts to him. Invited him into their home, and into their family. They're as dear to him as they are to Rapunzel.
And finally, Rapunzel herself. His guiding light. His sunshine. His dream. She who brought love, kindness, and meaning into his life full of self-destructive tendencies and impulses. He suffers to watch her try and fail, to grieve and change, watching the innocent girl he loves harden into somebody strong enough to survive this journey. He's frightened of the destiny she faces, of the power that burdens and marks her, and worries that at the end of her path whatever she becomes may not be the same person anymore. Please don't take his sunshine away.

I entirely expect that the ending of the show will incorporate Ever After, but then cut to a shot directly after the wedding when Rapunzel is sad and bitter about everything she had to go through. That's what I expect, at this point. I expect that in order to achieve victory and balance out the cosmos, Rapunzel is going to have to pay a price that lingers, that sticks around long after she supposedly achieves her happily ever after by marrying Eugene. Especially since Eugene himself is now guaranteed to also pay some kind of price.

But if you offer Raps absolute control and power, and a chance to be her OWN master, that's a more potent temptation for her. It's the entire reason why she keeps putting off marrying Eugene. She doesn't want anything tying her down. She wants to live her life free of chains. Offer her the power to do THAT, and tell her she needs to cut a few throats and wipe a few kingdoms from the world to achieve it, and I think even good, pure Rapunzel could be bent to darkness. Varian's entire arc was what clued us all in to how special this show is. I mean, he's a cute, plucky little kid who has a crush on one of the main characters. He's clumsy, goofy, and a little bit of a screwball. In most shows, he'd stay that way, and at the very end they'd actually match him up with Cass in a "pair the spares" move.
Instead, in THIS show, he suffers a terrible loss, gets his faith in the main character completely broken, and evolves into the first season's major villain. It's a highly unusual move, but it works really well, especially given how great the overall execution was. What Season 1 did with Varian was what woke a lot of people up and made them realize that this wasn't some ordinary show they were watching.

Honestly, the problems Cass initially has with Raps, regarding crippling her and not trusting her, seem like they were on the way to being fixed by the end of "Rapunzel Day One." She was genuinely affectionate to Rapunzel in that episode, too, and they were as cute as they've ever been together.
It really does seem to primarily be the fault of that fucking door. Whatever Cass saw in there is what broke her and turned her. Which makes me think that this is the avenue they'll use to insert Zhan Tiri into the main plot; remember, that fucking shell house was connected to him, and run by one of his personal minions. We've talked a little about Thanos Rapunzel/Doctor Manhattan Rapunzel in this thread. What if THAT'S what Cass saw? Demanitus' scroll talks about the instructions to wield the combined powers of the Sundrop and Moonstone, but was Rapunzel even able to read it? Gothel has the Stabbingtons kidnap Rapunzel, Cass goes alone to save her, Eugene convinces the guards to let him lead them to the tower as he's the only one who knows where it is. Cassandra sacrifices herself to save Rapunzel but is brought back with Sundrop. Cass and Raps kiss. Rapunzel returns to Corona as princess, Eugene is pardoned and released, and Cassandra is knighted and made royal bodyguard/secret lover to Rapunzel. And they all lived happily ever after.
Until Zhan Tiri drops the charade and painfully reminds Cass that the reality is a lot less pleasant and unfair.

It's actively faithful to the spirit of its source material while diverting from it in interesting ways. Also, having the original VAs and songwriters went a long way. Also this , strong writing helped a lot. As for those three, they're not really flanderized. It's just that their characters don't really develop as much as the rest of the cast does, so they're mostly about the same people as they were at the beginning of the show.
It just sticks out like a sore thumb here when the fanbase is this small. Let's hope we get something to talk about when D23 comes along, the wait is unbearable.
