They were very popular if you were on dA during the old days. Justin Roiland went from shitty web toons he made by himself in Flash to one of [AS]'s biggest cartoons ever.

Additionally, the style of the show itself is evocative of certain current trends in western animation that many find distasteful and lacking in the technical skill and polish of older cartoons. And, since hers is the name most closely related to the show, any hate the show attracts, she does as well.
I'm sure there are those that are jealous of her. She seemingly caught a wave at CN in a right place / right time kind of fashion that most dream for themselves. But I seriously doubt that's the reason why for most of those that hate her. I know it's true, I know of several artists that quit comics and animation for shit like 3D prop modeling and environmental design.
And even despite the horror stories I've heard, I don't think any of them regret their decisions, either. Most never actually "quit" comics and animation, either. They just aren't actively pursuing careers in those fields because that is lunacy at best and suicide at worst-- as opposed to some other artists I know that did focus on careers in comics and animation and it ruined them irreparably-- and those were some of the "successful" ones.
