Honestly the only remotely deep thing regarding the shipping characters in FOP was the whole "Tootie is bullied by her sister and lives in a broken household angle" which they quietly dropped later on anyway either because it was too dark for this show or because Hartman literally forgot she and Vicky were sisters.
A character doing something normally associated with boys was never really that groundbreaking even in this show when you consider that Vicky had also been shown to enjoy boy things (Skateboarding, action cartoons) and was only slightly more villainous than Trixie was in the early seasons.

It isn't so much a "push boundaries" thing as a aspect of character. Vicky is a person that lives as she wants and is older, so when she likes boy things it doesn't matter. Meanwhile Trixie is socially dependent so anything she considers not proper must be sealed in closet.
