Storytime of Pain: Watchmen

This was easily the most overrated pieces of shit I've ever had the misfortune of reading. I am genuinely shocked this is so well praised so let's slog through it together.

Bless you OP

Thanks, Yea Forums could use with some good comics

I want to say you're welcome, but you're eating shit

Dammit, the movie version sucks because you can easily tell it's Adrian who killed Blake by fighting style alone.

You need to take that shit back now. There are plenty of other capeshit and comics in general that are more popular and well received yet much worse than Watchmen

I think Snyder having Ozymandias dressed in a ninja suit when kills Comedian for no reason other than he wanted a cool fight scene at the beginning sets the tone for the rest of the movie

My bad

Shit taste.

Are you 10? Dark =/= edgy, and I hate that childish retards like you have turned the term into a completely meaningless buzzword

Not OP but Watchmen is the most basic entry-level "look at how smart I am for liking this multi-million selling comic"... comic. People like capeshit because it's fun and/or engaging otherwise. They don't have the pretension of Moore fans

God they did. They really couldn't be bothered to do anything to hide his identity with lighting and cinematography

Just because someone pretentious enjoys something that aligns with their tastes doesn't automatically make said thing pretentious, nor does it make other fans of said thing pretentious
Also not sure what that has to do with what was said

Now time for Moore's shitty prose

Attached: Watchmen 01 027.jpg (1920x2951, 927K)

There's nothing edgy about Watchmen. It's a perfect representation of 80s New York, and America.

Attached: Watchmen 01 028.jpg (1920x2951, 1.06M)

Is anyone else annoyed that people unironically sometimes refer to the 9 grid panel as Gibbons' creation? There are extremely scattered examples from Sienck, Sinke.. Bill, Kirby and Steranko, but they fuckin exist.
Trust me, I was also being unironic

It is the most overrated comic ever. But the art is nice and the structure is interesting. But it's boring and the story itself is retarded and doesn't make any sense.

Attached: Watchmen 01 032.jpg (1920x2951, 900K)

The story makes perfect sense, it's just incredibly basic and dull

Attached: Watchmen 01 033.jpg (1920x2951, 231K)

I honestly like Comic book Rorschach. He's pretty casual and blunt. I also like how Jon here is explicitly a chad

It's official, Movie Laurie was better.

Attached: Watchmen 02 001.jpg (1920x2951, 1.45M)

Even weirder when people attribute it Moore. Moore said before that he had just read 100 Rooms by Jaime Hernandez and got the inspiration from there. Jaime said it wasn't any big deal and called it a Ditko grid.

>There are plenty of other capeshit and comics in general that are more popular and well received yet much worse than Watchmen
My point is that this is in fact, retarded. Watchmen's constantly held up as a literary masterpiece (despite TotBF being redundant padding, which has been admitted in interviews, I'm pretty sure), to the point of stifling the fucking genre. Moore didn't help by constantly backswinging on what he thought the genre should be, or insincerely trying to do "throwbacks" to something he didn't like at all at the time. ABC is faux nostalgia charmless crap is what I'm saying here.

>Tom Strong and the rest of the ABC bunch leave me cold for a lot of reasons. First—and I realize this is purely subjective, but what isn’t?—I find a smugness, a condescension that reads to me as nostalgia being done by someone who is not in the least bit nostalgic. Almost as if Moore sits down to write and flips his brain 180°, so he’s not really writing what he feels or what he likes, just the exact opposite of what he would usually write.

I love Hollis Mason, such a good moral straight man compared to all the sexual weirdos and facists in the Minutemen.
Superman inspiring him to be a hero is heartwarming.

Who at all is calling Watchmen a literary masterpiece? Sounds like a strawman to me

Attached: Watchmen 02 021.jpg (1920x2951, 1.47M)

to be fair, this may be true. i read promethea recently and it was fucking incoherent. it starts off as a superhero thing then dumps all those characters and tails off into some wizard magic lunacy and then 9/11 actually happens in story.

Can Dr. Manhattan even do those things Blake says, or is he just trying to cover his own ass and justify the murder of a pregnant woman?

To have transcended the genre. It used to be on the NYT Bestsellers List, or Time Bestsellers. I'm not a Burger so I don't know which is correct
And fuck that, Watchmen's okay, but held up more by style than anything.
More like Batman/The Question, but with Question murdering people. Rorshach doesn't really fit into a lot of alignments like that. Maybe it'd fit Hawk and Dove more closely?

Attached: Watchmen 02 025.jpg (1920x2951, 1.53M)

i thought rorschach was the question, or some character like him, in the version of the story that used public domain character?

Both. Manhattan could have stopped the murder if he wanted to, but he simply didn't care. Blake's also trying to justify his shit though.

Attached: Watchmen 02 031.jpg (1920x2951, 848K)

Watchmen is pretty fucking great, and coming up with a minor dig like saying the Black Freighter part is 'padding' doesn't make it not a great work.

Are there better comics? Yeah. Does Watchmen deserve all the praise it gets? Probably not.
Does that make Watchmen less of a great work? No. It shouldn't.

Not public domain. DC bought the rights to Charlston characters. But this is true. Nite Owl was Blue Beetle (Ted), Rorshach was Question.

He can manipulate matter to his will so yes. Maybe not literally (can Dr. Manhattan create life?) but he certainly could have stopped him

Attached: Watchmen 02 032.jpg (1920x2951, 859K)

>held up more by style than anything.
What did he mean by this?

Attached: Watchmen 02 033.jpg (1920x2951, 239K)

On Mars he makes breathable atmosphere for Lori and perfect glass like material for his structure out of the sand/earth, so yeah I guess

And he transmuted a shit ton of Lithium or something too for hydrogen batteries or something, which is why everyone's cars are electric ("OBSOLETE MODELS A SPECIALTY") and Dan can have a flying hovercraft thing

i thought the frighter stuff was neat and thematically relevant. i like non essential stuff like that.

I was under the impression that Dr. Manhattan was a man of science, and not a magician. In the comics, he has a good reason not to care. He's just tired of modern society's two faced nature.

After years of having one of the genres I like be defined by Watchmen, I don't really care that much. I got a copy for ten quid out of a fucking toy store with two mini comic shelves. Otherwise it doesn't mean much to me. It's one of many good comics in the superhero genre. That's it. I'll probably buy the Road To Watchmen thing too

If it's meant to be a deconstruction, it does a shit job at it.

Attached: Watchmen 03 004.jpg (1920x2951, 1.32M)

That it's okay as a story, but dragged down by Freighter. The best aspect's the art, and arguably the way it helps the story unfold

Attached: Watchmen 03 005.jpg (1920x2951, 1.33M)

Attached: Watchmen 03 006.jpg (1920x2951, 1.38M)

Attached: Watchmen 03 008.jpg (1920x2951, 1.42M)

but that was the point, it's a superman reference. god exists, he's american, that's terrifying.

the art is the story. it is a comic.

N-no, but you don't understand. It only works if there's only one thing with legit superpowers. It's scawy cos he gets less human, then more human. Where's my fucking Red Ghost analog?

Attached: Watchmen 03 009.jpg (1920x2951, 1.29M)

The best thing about most Moore comics is that you can't really separate the art from the writing. There's a reason why there's so many artists who never did such a relevant comic again after working with Moore, like Gibbons.

Attached: Watchmen 03 010.jpg (1920x2951, 1.29M)

Attached: Watchmen 03 011.jpg (1920x2951, 1.35M)

Dr. Manhattan is obviously a much different person from Jon Osterman - more practical, yet wildly lacking in empathy

Attached: Watchmen 03 013.jpg (1920x2951, 1.49M)

Attached: Watchmen 03 014.jpg (1920x2951, 1.25M)

I kinda agree with OP. While it does things with the comic medium that you can't do in other media, it's still a hugely boring comic. If this was made today everyone would criticize the characters for being emo cry babies.

Dr. Manhattan is too pure for Laurie.

Name 10 better comics.

>the art is the story. it is a comic.
See, this is a weird argument. A comic can have art without text, but not text without art, sure. But being Alan Moore, this book has reams of text. I don't think the plotting or dialogue all hold up. Kinda like Colan's early DD issues.
>There's a reason why there's so many artists who never did such a relevant comic again after working with Moore, like Gibbons.
Yeah, like the chick he did Lost Girls with. Tbf, that's probably just down to poor choices afterwards. Plenty of writers and artists in capeshit haven't crutched on one writer. Moore nowadays does little but fall back on
>public domain works or writing round copyright
>his rep from 30 years ago
His more recent comics aren't phenomena. His rep and interviews keep him afloat

Attached: Watchmen 03 018.jpg (1920x2951, 1.67M)

Attached: Watchmen 03 019.jpg (1920x2951, 1.11M)

>Manhattan chooses to glow
>Also means probably chooses to be blue
I don't understand this

Attached: Watchmen 03 022.jpg (1920x2951, 2.05M)

I liked it too. I thought it was good atmospheric stuff that drew interesting parallels to the many stories at work within the larger work that is Watchmen.

And in Watchmen's grim and dark mirror world of our world, reading a pretend comic written by a pretend author of that world was interesting. And I've always been a sucker for "the play within a play" trope, it dates back to Shakespeare so you know it's gotta be good.

Would this interview have been shorter if Dr. Manhattan was on Jerry Springer?

Attached: Watchmen 03 027.jpg (1920x2951, 1.04M)

I'm saying if he can stop glowing then why can't he stop being blue, go back to looking like Jon, etc

Moore also did a bunch of things outside comics, and the interviews that "keep him afloat" are actually 10 year old interviews that Yea Forums keeps regurgitating. And as I said, Moore has produced many excellent comics with lots of different artists. Most of those artists haven't produced anything as good as their collaborations with Moore. If you ever read Moore's scripts, he actually demands a lot from the artist and makes them be an active part of the building of the story, which in return usually makes them put a lot more of them into it. Gibbons never put the same amount of work in a comic after Watchmen.

I would think everything about his personality and character arc would explain that.

I mean, for one he explicitly hid the fact for many years that he was Jon Osterman and never told his father he was alive, only publically unveiling himself after all his father's death.

I've read that the real-life version of why he's colured blue is a reference to cherenkov radiation, but I've never seen or heard an interview or script excerpt from Moore or Gibbons or Higgins to back that up

Jon submits to their every desire, but women are afraid of him because he doesn't use his powers to be a chad.

Jon is pretty much a normie.

This. Thing is, I don't even really like Watchmen all that well on a gut level. In my heart, ya know? But, and I'm going to own this fucking gag, it's built like clockwork. The entire 12 issue run is so precisely written it's a masterpiece on that level alone.

I mean it tells us the personal journey of the villain who we don't know is the villain until the end and who gets fairly little panel time otherwise. It's Adrien's story, and you only really find that out afterward.

it's overrated but that doesn't make it a bad comic. The art alone, especially on fearful symmetry, is worth the price of admission.

Just going to throw this out there, what if the real reason Doomsday Cock is being delayed is because DC wants a Rorschach book to follow it up, but no one wants to write a book about Black Fake Rorschach?

Reggie is one of the better parts of that book, so I doubt it.

Black Rorschach was the weakest link of Doomsday Clock. I cared more about Mime and Marionette more than any of the characters.

no its probably because gary frank and geoff johns are just actually unironically taking their time making it

they spend like an hour discussing one panel, and an hour discussing what kind of drink the comedian is drinking. they are probably seriously laboring over on how to write some panels and pages and thats alright.

It would be alright if all that discussion was producing good work.

I'd argue that it' not alright.
At the end of the day, it's still going to be seen a shit book and there's not much that can change that fate anymore. It's better to just push it out than dragging it out while they argue about what color, shape, and solidity is best for the shit.

That's what I love about Rorschach, Moore wrote this fundamentally broken and twisted man that would probably disgust most people if they ever met him yet he arguably ends up becoming the most sympathetic character in the story despite it all.

Rorschach is the most normal character in comics. He just had a terrible childhood and wanted to be a better person.

Exactly. Rorschach is a disgusting, horrible freak who becomes sympathetic (note that sympathetic doesn't = right). Ozy has all the stereotypical traits of the perfect hero but becomes a monster.

>Rorschach is the most normal character in comics
What about Dan and Laurie

Attached: Watchmen 06 027.jpg (1920x2951, 1.45M)

Take a moment to reflect on just how many plot are STILL unresolved and now there are only 2 issues left to wrap everything up.

Some of these plots would justify a whole mini to explore and they are being created and dropped left and right.

No, he was left deeply scarred by his childhood. That was the point of . He has some outright pathological ideas about women and society, among other things. Which I guess is pretty normal, considering how fucked up many people are, but he's not what you'd usually call a normal person.

Think about it in a different thread.

Was Saw inspired by this scene? Come to think of it, the Jigsaw Killer is very reminiscent of Rorschach in his absolutist black-and-white view of the world. He's what Rorschach would be if Rorschach allowed for the possibility that people could be redeemed.

People used to hold those beliefs about women and society. Rorschach's primary flaw is that he doesn't accept compromise or believe in detente.

He had to die because he wouldn't accept the New Modern way of compromising ideals in exchange for security. Or in another way, he'd pretty much hate what America has become under the Patriot Act, or the reach across the aisle brand of politics promoted by news networks.

Snyder, is that you?

You're missing the point of the story. Moore is comparing and contrasting Rorschach's deontology with Ozymandias's utilitarianism. Is it better to kill a few people to save billions? Or is it better to pursue justice for one person but condemn billions?

The story intentionally doesn't give a definitive answer. It's supposed to make the reader think.

I'm pretty certain most people in this thread are just glad for an excuse to read Watchmen again and is ignoring the whole "Of pain" aspect of it outside of mocking OP.
Also don't post images in a storytime thread, not even the bad ones.

It's obviously a bad idea to kill a few people to save billions. Ozymandias is just a misguided social liberal who wants to solve all the worlds problems with money, science, and a huge practical joke that has serious political ramifications. People just don't like being lied to about waging war and if the truth found it, people are gonna be pissed.

I honestly don't see Rorschach surviving past the 90s. Either the Columbine School Shooting, or Oklahoma City Bombing makes him have a realization.

>Rorschach's Journal. June 14th, 1996:
>Awoke early. Local children had vandalized the fire hydrant outside and were yelling their savage pleasure. Hot today. Sheets peeled off of me like a diabetic's scab.
>Found truck in alley, where I left it. Bird had relieved itself on the windshield. Heard breadcrumbs cause constipation in pigeons; must investigate further.
>Mr. Frosty drove past as I was restocking the Rocky Road. They are starting earlier and earlier ever since my route began. Soon there will be war.

Rorschach is far too complex than that. The mental instability argument kinda hinges on whether therapy, or quaaludes, or oxycontin are needed to keep him sane.

What is that thing Jupiter is smoking?

Some weird Alternate History E-Cig that Moore and Gibbons made up for Watchmen.

Not quite. Some are as good, but none are better.
No.
Not better.
Give me 10 masterwork comics that surpass Watchmen, not just comics you like better.

>This, only unironically
It isn't important for being the best story ever told but for using the medium of comic books to do interesting things. Its not a bad story either, if a bit cynical overall.

there's also the fact he's retardedly wrong
there's no shortage of existential problems the people of the world could unite to end. the problem is everyone has their own solution, and it's better than everyone else's
dropping a giant space squid on new york won't change that, not even for a moment. it's laughable

>You like this..? This what gets you hot?
>...Yes
*proceeds to kick the shit out of him*

He's the best part of Before Watchmen.

nah, he enjoys inflicting the pain
he's had that revelation

It's not true. You're a Yea Forumstard. I can say damn well that I find something enjoyable. No amount of Moorewanking has or ever will change what I like. He doesn't have that sway over me. Which is more than any of his fans can say

If you're going to air out your shitty opinions for everyone else to see you might as well do the legwork to actually make them mildly constructive, especially when you're trying to belittle another side. Saying "capeshit should be fun!" means absolutely nothing. It's nothing but empty words because your definition of fun is unique only to you. All your comment shows is how much of an intellectually little person you are.

It's not even my favorite Moore. I enjoyed From Hell a lot more, for instance. But it's right at the top of American comics, specially anything published by the big two.

Hi Alan. 80's Americans weren't grubby little socialist trogs like yourself.

It’s almost like it’s the ravings of a madman, Moore has said that Roschach’s Journal entries are partially inspired by letters David Berkowitz, The Son of Sam, sent to the police, a comparison actually made one point in the book.

>Question mark on Rorschach's coat in his debut panel

Never noticed that; neat little nod

What's the matter, did Watchmen hurt your capeshit mind?

I don't even consider Watchmen capeshit for a good reason. It does seem to be repellent to the type of people who enjoy current Marvel/DC offering.

There is only ONE character in this entire series that has actual superpowers, and its Dr. Manhatten and only the USA has him, and its the biggest driving force. The other are just a bunch of costumed losers trying to beat themselves up and creating romantic narratives about it, why would THAT exist in the USSR and what relevance would it have to this story?

Why are you so dumb? Why are you so dumb?

>Manhattan smiling as Laurie starts down the path that leads her to ending up with Dan

Again, detail I never noticed before. It's sweet.

So you regressed? When I first read it at 16, I really liked it, particularly the ending of it, but I didn't think it was that great, sure didn't have any interest in reading any other comics that\s for sure, and I even found some of the dialogue to be a tad bit pretentious at times, but as reread how that I'm older, I'm surprised at just how much more intelligent and layered it really is. I don't even see how you can not call it objectively good. I feel Watchmen is most appealing to those who hate capeshit,

I don't know what's with Yea Forums that attracts little neurotic boomers like you who need to inject your neurotic political comments, but shut up. Especially since its objectively wrong, Nixon could have stayed in office, impeachment doesn't actually remove a president ya know. I cannot hate that man after hearing those Nixon tapes.

I admire your talent for bait, OP.

It is funny that Moore wrote Rorschach to be a huge critique and slam on Objectivism, and yet, the smelly hobo is probably one of people's favorite characters and a lot of people deeply like him BECAUSE he won't compromise with the dilemma that happens in the end. Talk about getting BTFO by your own creation.

Still, I must say, I have to respect Moore as a writer. He may be some weird hermit commie, but he sure knows how to write characters. Some worse writer could easily screw up Rorschach with whatever intent they have for him. I mean, most of the characters in Watchmen are extremely interesting that you can find many things to analyze them about. Like how Walter Kovacs and Rorschach can be said to be 2 different people, and the end is Walter Kovacs returning.

>I cannot hate that man after hearing those Nixon tapes.
Elaborate.

If you meant to make a critique of the writing, you did a shit job at it.

I'm not sure that wasn't Moore's intention. The set up to hate Rorshach and the conclusion where the crazy guy is the only one to stick to his principles is too perfect to be an accident. Moore likes to explore the good and bad qualities of people with extreme ideologies. In this case Mr. A in all his insanity actually makes the noble choice in the end, if not the most pragmatic. On some level I think even most people who don't agree with him are forced to admire that. Maybe I'm giving Moore too much credit, but that's how I always saw it.
youtube.com/watch?v=hD7EKZ32ODQ

You have to understand. Moore was part of a very specific group of people in the UK during the 1980s. They were utterly convinced that Reagan and Thatcher were about to shut down democracy and shove them all in camps. Nixon in power forever is just an alternate version of A Very British Coup.

>I cannot hate that man after hearing those Nixon tapes.
I doubt anything in the tapes is actually nice enough to make you forget he purposefully prolonged the war in Vietnam to ensure his own election, unless you're just straight up easily impressionable by the words of noted liars and sociopaths.

You weren't there at the time. Nixon was fucking a lot of shit up and the threat of impeachment did a lot to save America from his bullshit. You just don't get to appreciate it because you take your salvation for granted.

Yeah, I don't get the "Moore wanted people to hate Rorschach" meme that gets purported around here. Yeah, Moore wrote Rorschach as a bit of a critique on Mr. A type heroes but at the same time he did it in a nuanced way and never really goes out of his way to condemn him. What Moore takes issue with is retards who just take Rorschach at face value and think he's some cool anti-hero. Basically Snyder and the like who think Rorschach did nothing wrong and is someone to look up to. Moore wrote Rorschach as a sympathetic character and even admirable at times but ultimately he's self-destructive and unpleasant human being.

>An angry Rorschach appears.

>TFW this is how Storytimes come back

Well fuck it, I might as well do Storytime of Pain on what I think is the stupidest, most overrated hunk of shit that the Comics Industry every vomitted out: Animal Man.

>so you regressed

No, I read some actual literature and realised that Alan Moore doesn't actually DO anything with real-world trivia he wove into Watchmen's fictional universe. Things like tying the Kitty Genovese murder/bystander effect into Rorschach's origin, he doesn't add anything meaningful in terms of insight or transformative quality to the event. He simply holds it up unexamined as an example of how we live in a society. It's not deep, it's utterly puerile. Maybe people were more easily impressed in an age before Wikipedia.

Based.

It certainly doesn't show in the finished work

I think theres a videogame about them, The End Is Nigh. Never played it though

>i hate this comic
>despite most liking it
>so i'm gonna spend over two hours posting it's pages
>come join in my dislike of this comic
>even though most of you will like it
>i have absolutely nothing better to do

Anyone else do this with their real therapist? Haha

>the virgin Dan
>the chad Ozzy

He's focused on his work

She was literally raised to fight and had no other life skills, what else could she do?

No, the story doesn't make any sense. Killing millions of people to cause world peace is something Bizarro would think of in a 60s Superman comic because it's absurd nonsense.

>rorschach says you might as well call him a nazi
>veidt responds with 'hm'
