Watchmen's constantly held up as a literary masterpiece (despite TotBF being redundant padding, which has been admitted in interviews, I'm pretty sure), to the point of stifling the fucking genre. Moore didn't help by constantly backswinging on what he thought the genre should be, or insincerely trying to do "throwbacks" to something he didn't like at all at the time. I liked it too. I thought it was good atmospheric stuff that drew interesting parallels to the many stories at work within the larger work that is Watchmen.

Moore also did a bunch of things outside comics, and the interviews that "keep him afloat" are actually 10 year old interviews that Yea Forums keeps regurgitating. And as I said, Moore has produced many excellent comics with lots of different artists. Most of those artists haven't produced anything as good as their collaborations with Moore. If you ever read Moore's scripts, he actually demands a lot from the artist and makes them be an active part of the building of the story, which in return usually makes them put a lot more of them into it. Gibbons never put the same amount of work in a comic after Watchmen.

You're missing the point of the story. Moore is comparing and contrasting Rorschach's deontology with Ozymandias's utilitarianism. Is it better to kill a few people to save billions? Or is it better to pursue justice for one person but condemn billions?
The story intentionally doesn't give a definitive answer. It's supposed to make the reader think.

It is funny that Moore wrote Rorschach to be a huge critique and slam on Objectivism, and yet, the smelly hobo is probably one of people's favorite characters and a lot of people deeply like him BECAUSE he won't compromise with the dilemma that happens in the end. I'm not sure that wasn't Moore's intention. The set up to hate Rorshach and the conclusion where the crazy guy is the only one to stick to his principles is too perfect to be an accident. Moore likes to explore the good and bad qualities of people with extreme ideologies. In this case Mr. A in all his insanity actually makes the noble choice in the end, if not the most pragmatic. On some level I think even most people who don't agree with him are forced to admire that. Maybe I'm giving Moore too much credit, but that's how I always saw it.

Yeah, I don't get the "Moore wanted people to hate Rorschach" meme that gets purported around here. Yeah, Moore wrote Rorschach as a bit of a critique on Mr. A type heroes but at the same time he did it in a nuanced way and never really goes out of his way to condemn him. What Moore takes issue with is retards who just take Rorschach at face value and think he's some cool anti-hero. Basically Snyder and the like who think Rorschach did nothing wrong and is someone to look up to. No, I read some actual literature and realised that Alan Moore doesn't actually DO anything with real-world trivia he wove into Watchmen's fictional universe. Things like tying the Kitty Genovese murder/bystander effect into Rorschach's origin, he doesn't add anything meaningful in terms of insight or transformative quality to the event. He simply holds it up unexamined as an example of how we live in a society. It's not deep, it's utterly puerile. Maybe people were more easily impressed in an age before Wikipedia.
