I really don't understand how it works anymore. Gravity Falls was popular as shit and for the first year and a half the only merch it got was a couple of crappy Halloween costumes. Star Vs (not exactly a great show, but still,) has even less.
At least when it comes to CN, the bad, overproduced, oversaturated shows are the ones that get all the Hot Topic merch. And the ones we take for granted like Clarence and Gumball eventually just fade away without fanfare (not that Gumball hasn't had a good run.)

Thats only alot to 1 person, and other then the Pierrot episodes which cost $800,000 a episode which was because of the cost of Japanese labor Books 1-3 only costed $200,000-300,000 when Mir was doing it because Bryke learned everything they needed to learn from the first show and hence they didn't need to wast money on plane trips to China and got much cheaper celebrities then what was on Avatar (replacing Mako/Mark Hamill with Zelda Williams).
Book 4 & Voltron:LD's episodes were only $90,000 each because the crew knew how to handle the budget by then.
It was extremely well known that Bryke blew Avatar's per episode budget on plane trips to China.
