Honestly, I think the show has the same problem as Sonic the Hedgehog; both are able to cost off of the good will people have for their character designs and sometimes the music.

I liked the first half of Qrow's depression when Rube was trying to be there for him but they kinda botched it at the end. End of season 6 was kino.
The Neo fight in S6 was also kino.
Season 5 is just shit and S4 only has 1 good fight in it.
Season 3 ending was kino and S2 & 1 have good fight scenes.
The actual story writing and character dialogue is mediocre.

Yeah man it's not like he was easily smacking Blake around and then one shot Yang when she showed up. Blake and Yang spent almost no time actually improving their skills after that and Yang looked like she was still losing to fucking Mercury during the battle of Haven. And before Cinder got her maiden powers, Adam's threat to fuck off made her have to concede her offer even with E&M at her side. Not to mention I doubt Cinder would want to recruit someone who gets beat by a couple of angsty schoolgirls.

The first two seasons had a fun feel of animesque humor mixed with great action and some good character drama, they weren't the greatest seasons of an animated show ever but they're definitely better than average and I feel like the people who trash them should probably rewatch them.
Season three had a rough start but near the end starts picking up and has an extremely good season finale. Had RWBY ended with the third season then the show would be vastly better regarded than it is now.
Season four and everything after it is just a mess. Poor pacing, poor action, bad character writing, really bad plot planning. I could see how some hardcore fans would still be watching after season 4 but I don't know why anyone would watch the show after the season 5 finale.

Yang's training was equivalent more to recuperation than actual training to get used to her mechanical arm. Also there's no indication its actually been a year between the fall of Beacon and the fight between Adam and Yang. Blake spent the entire time after the fall of Beacon on a boat, in her hometown, and trying to rally villagers against the white fang. We never saw her doing anything to improve as a fighter. And even if they did train the gap was so huge before that there's no way it should have been as easy for them as it was. I know it was recycled Monty choreography but Adam didn't land a single clean hit on Yang during the first half of the fight.

Roosterteeth wouldn't allow for a RWBY character to lose, but on the other hand, it's Weiss so it's up in the air at that point.

RWBY stopped being good when they started substituting good fights with fanservice.

Adam went to destroy beacon and Blake was a side mission. When she ran he made no attempt to finish her off despite it being within his ability. Seriously she was injured and carrying Yang, if it meant that much to him he would have taken her out.

All I wanted was Weiss to look Adam's deformed face at least once. Not even Adam to go full muh revenge or something, just to see how her family made so much money. My cynical side think the writers killed Adam not only for Bumblebee but because they were tired of the racist subplot and it was easier to focus on daddy issues on V7 so with Adam's dead, any valid complain about the faunus problem is closed under hack standards.

Them killing off/reforming the only characters who had some sort of character in the organization only made it even weaker, and introducing a new character this late in the volume to take over will just waste time. I honestly do think they just want to be done with the whole thing, which is why it seems like they're hastily rushing both those subplot through so Blake can be fully focused on Salem.

Blake didn't really close the gap. We can see from the shit he pulled on Yang that he wasn't even trying with her. As for Yang, from the get go it was blamed on her losing control and charging in. Second the fight wasn't suppose to go down like that, the was cut for time. Clearly they are writing like it happened and they were trading blows. The gap between Yang and Adam wasn't meant to be big. The few bits we saw weren't yang getting completely out skilled like with Neo, just being kept on the defense.

The gap wasn't meant to be that big but it ended up that way and they shouls have written around it instead of being expected to believe Yang was always that good and the only reason she lost was because she's reckless after she got embarrassed by Neo, Adam, and Mercury. Yang has never been shown to be clever or skilled, so we shouldn't be expected to think that simply solving her anger issues is enough to make her a match for Adam. If that's the case she could probably beat Neo now too since I can't imagine her being any better than Adam.

Monty was a weeaboo who didn't know what he was doing, just because he can make a fun fight scene doesn't mean he's any good at telling a story. Rooster Teeth isn't a real studio, they're just a bunch of fans who got internet famous by making overrated Halo videos. RWBY only got popular because of the novelty of it being an "anime" made by westerners. Cinder isn't that bad or RT's waifu, she's simply been planned as the major antagonist from Season 1. Anyone thinking that she would die in Volume 5 just doesn't pay much attention to the show in general or appreciates what Cinder is in the story.

Penny is definitely coming back, they teased her creator the moment after she 'died'.

She's a robot + her creator was teased + she sustained major damage = rebuilt. It's not that difficult of a plot point.

For me, it's easily the best moment in the mess that is Haven.

The Jaune vs Cinder fight wasn't the problem, is that immediately after the writers decided to fix all of Jaune's problems in a completely uninspired and unengaged way, and expected us to be satisfied.

In spite of your dislike of the Adam fight, at least Yang spent volumes putting in hard work to overcome her flaws and weaknesses (Confronting her mom, Blake, etc).... And the reward to her hard work was pretty outlandishly over the top - maybe rushed, whatever. But there was buildup, and there was a true sense of victory at the end of it.

That's one of the most obvious trends of RWBY - that through hard work, characters overcome their problems, and get a lot of reward for their efforts. Ren and Nora avenge Kuroyuri, Yang overcomes her PTSD and beats the crap out of Adam, Blake overcomes her fears and redeems the White Fang, etc...

But instead of putting in work, Jaune has to sit on a bench and have a leaf and a 'mysterious' acronym-lady magically make things better. Worse still, the whole scene tries to spin Pyrrha's death as some sort of good thing, which is incredibly revisionist if you actually pay attention to Volume 3 and see how it cast Pyrrha's death in an extremely tragic and traumatic light. And that's Jaune's big reward - some stupid spiritual semantic bullshit so that he doesn't have to feel guilt or negatively about Pyrrha or be an interesting character.

Imagine following JNPR since Volume 1 only to end up at Volume 6 with "She's still with me in spirit". What a letdown.

The house faunus is allowed certain rights and keep around as token symbol, they even assist to Beacon Academy, but it's not supposed to change the status quo but keep it that way for the majority of field faunus. Blake and Sun are house faunus, they can afford their weapons and education. Illya and Adam are field faunus, they're basically screwed by the system.

They blew their load too early by destroying the school. Now all they have is a generic "find all the plot tokens before the bad guys do" plot. It doesn't help that no volume has managed to end as strongly as Volume 3 did. Other finales range from meh to Breach tier awful.

A lot of really awful plots (Weiss' arc in v4, the abortion that was the Menagerie arc, Team RWYJNR's Exposition Funtime) also served to drag the quality down. Even in the good volumes they feel like they have to maintain a minimum level of suck or else things go out of balance.

The problem is it used to be just RWBY with other teams being secondary but now we've got both RWBY+JRN+Oscar+Crow the bloat on the main cast is too much to give
everyone any character development. S6 should have ended with them splitting up. Team RWBY heading for Atlas, Ren and Nora spending some time together in Argus while Jaune mopes in the shadow

Nah senpai, Cordovin, the twins, and Saphron's family are likely never to show up again, they aren't cast glut.

The only added character to the main group this volume was Maria, and she's served a very important role in Ruby's story and will probably fuck off the moment they land in Atlas.

I feel like you're using this Buzzword without any coherent example of where this glut has been shown to be a casual factor to a decline in quality.

Your accusations of my supposed pretentiousness aside.
The show has four main characters. Plus, Oscar, Ozpin, Crow and Jaune. Who are also as complex as the other main characters. Likely to never show up again isn't really relative. Because they did show up and they took up screentime. When Ruby, for whom the show is named after, already has so little. Let alone the other members of the team.

I have no idea where you got RWBY getting not enough screentime, what exactly was missed? What is the level that you expected that was undershot?

Wasn't Ruby getting Maria exactly what her character needed? How was Cordovin's antagonism to Ruby detrimental - wasn't it something that was necessary for Ruby to get that screentime + development?

Same goes for Ozpin/Qrow/Oscar. Without Ozpin/Oscar, we would have never gotten the critical backstory behind Salem and the plot point of RWBY dealing with these new implications. Without Qrow we wouldn't have a moment for Ruby to assert her authority + determination. They 'took screentime' isn't a good argument when they were chiefly used to advance RWBY's plot.

Sorry for insinuating pretentiousness, you gave me that impression. I repeat, if anyone has suffered from supposed character glut, it's JNPR, not RWBY. Maybe instead of blaming characters, you should focus on the time + production constraints.

I'm starting to believe that you were projecting, since I only ever used the term character glut to quote you. Additionally, the term character glut is used to refer to the cast as a whole. You don't pick and choose characters that are suffering from it and characters that aren't. Either your show suffers from character glut or it doesn't.
Time and production constraints is the excuse I often here to protect shitty shows, games comics or what have you. The truth it, it always comes down to poor management and productivity.
As for RWBY not getting enough screentime. Explain to me what Weiss's character arc was. What about Yang? What were the themes of volume 6 and how did it correspond with Ruby? If you can't answer these, then the characters didn't get enough development. In part due to shitty writing, in part due to lack of screentime.

Not trying to protect the show that much, it's obvious it'd be a lot better if there were more time in each episode, but to say that certain characters are "the problem" by taking up screentime is just wrong from a narrative point because each of these characters were given an important role to play in the story - you cut these out and you would irrevocably change the show and contradict all of the volumes prior. Cutting characters is fair if you're arguing "what they should've done at the start"... but not a viable strategy to what should be done now.

For example, JNPR is a fuckin' travesty. There is a viable question of why they're even in the show to begin with if all their development was just going to lead them to this current situation. But it would be worse to advocate dropping JNPR at this point, because it makes their wasted potential even more confounding and undeniable. At least in future Volumes you may have them *do* something and somewhat salvage them, but in cutting them and giving more screentime to other characters, you firmly established JNPR as a waste of everyone's (including the creator's) time.

I can answer all of those questions, but I don't know if I have the character limit for that or if we have the patience to go through all of those points. Point is, I agree that the story is cramped and would benefit greatly from more screentime in general, but I don't see much shitty writing (key word much).
