There's several different communities with public servers now, both vanilla and modified. Yea Forums, Reddit, and some third party entities all have their own groups of servers with thousands of people playing. They're streamlining the code to make the game run smoother, and there's talks of modding the game now.

/vg/ has it's own quiet and comfy server going, there's a couple reddit RP ones, and then the big one all the drama comes from.

Sort of. Its design sensibilities are pretty outdated and some of its gameplay mechanics are pretty irritating but it's enjoyable enough. Personally I find the gameworld to be rather sparse. Realistically you're going to spend most of your time creating a bunch of joke and pun characters that never get past level 20.
