I think during the Shadow Weaver flashback, the majority of the casualties were male (although there were only 4 on screen) so it could probably be inferred that males make up most of the army and it can also be inferred that they started hiring anyone after the princess rebellion formed. As far as I can tell, both the Horde and the Rebellion have both make and female conscripts.
I wouldn't worry too much because the princesses make up an incredibly small portion of the entire population and some of them are straight. You're not wrong though. It does leave weird implications.

It would be neat if they revealed that the more monstrous species of humanoid ended up turning to the Horde because, historically, they were treated poorly by the princesses. A little moral ambiguity that makes it more believable so much princess controlled territory could be lost so quickly, and that the Horde is able to consistently recruit outside of kidnapping orphans. Heck, even Scorpia made it clear that some princesses didn't have great relations with the others, and I'm willing to bet the ones that haven't been recruited by Adora yet are the ones that were ostracised for questionable reasons.
