People keep telling me that I need to do voice work.
What do I need to start, and where can I make a few quick bucks while I figure shit out?

Step 1: Become an actor. Do lots of local theater, some improv classes, definitely take a few courses at your local community college. Get the experience of embodying another person as much as you can.

Step 2: Invest in creating a home studio. This means a decent microphone, acoustic treatment for the space, and learning how to use Audacity or whatever other software you want.

Step 3: Start doing projects for fun. These threads are great practice, but also check out Casting Call Club and wade through the OCEANS OF AUTISM to find a project that sounds like it could be enjoyable to be a part of. There are what are called "pay-to-play" sites where you pay a monthly subscription fee and get access to paying auditions that you can try your hand at, but some are sketchy as hell and the biggest one (voices.com) is quickly gaining a notorious reputation for ripping off their hiring clients.

Step 4: Look into a coach/trainer online, but be extremely wary and do your research. There are some great, reputable coaches out there who will listen to you and give you an honest answer about whether or not you're ready to make a demo before they charge you a dime, but there are also lots of things called "demo mills" where they don't give a shit and will take your money whether you're ready to make a quality demo or not.
