Keep in mind the SPC have the turtles outnumbered, have magical weapons and armor--including flight inducing upgrades, a cannon, and a fucking giant robot.
Sure various iterations of the TMNT have dealt with shit like this before, but all at once?

The breed of robot-animal-people that inhabit the SPC universe have extreme slapstick resilience. One even manages to survive unaided atmospheric re-entry from orbit. In the finale their town gets nuked and everyone survives (although the town itself is wiped off the map.)

At their cores they're not too different. Puns, fourth wall breaking, pop culture references, random zaniness from staffs that were just screwing around and having fun.
Also note that the official subs are pretty bad. Lots of mistranslations, censorship and general dodginess.

Was Saban losing the rights what finally caused stuff to start happening for the show in 2012? Because it's strange that after so long with no one touching the show, all of a sudden Tatsunoko released the original show on DVD in Japan, then Discotek released both versions on DVD, Madman releases SPC on DVD, some French company releases both on DVD, a couple different companies start releasing toys, official streaming starts on Crunchyroll and otehr sites, a book gets released then localized a few years later, etc. All that after so long.

I would assume Capcom bringing SPC to attention was what got Tatsunoko invested again. Saban was pretty much the only thing in the way.
Too bad another Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is never happening. The first one was just too much of a legal battle in general, and it's amazing the game even made it to the States.
