I followed this show in 2009, when it was announced, and was in all of the Yea Forums threads in the early days. Those early threads were quite a ride, especially when The Dress aired, and the shitstorms that happened following The Picnic and The Goons.

I used to talk to the crew. Ben sent me this e-mail in 2013, where he talked briefly about his plans for the ending. The last time we spoke was in 2014 and, well, I sort of stopped watching the show in 2015. I stopped watching a lot of shows at that time and, once I fell behind, I never could be bothered to catch back up.

When the show introduced these meta elements, subsequently hyped up an overarching plotline about these meta elements, and then halted the plotline to a crawl before it could be finished, it gave up the chance to end the show on such a non-meta manner.

They're still recording and I'm pretty sure they're not all the way through season 6 right now. CN isn't going to let an AT level cartoon just end with a meager six seasons.

I think that season 5 was planned to be the final season for a good while. The first third to half of the fifth season, to me, was half decent (about as good as season 4) but after that, things began to fall apart thanks to a combination of stagnation and poorly thought-out expierntation. I think that, if my hypothesis is correct, that much of the fifth season's second half would've been spent wrapping up the overarching plot instead of focusing entirley on wacky episodic incidents.

Should have ended a year ago. It's run its course, but I'm glad it's ending regardless. It really was one of the few modern cartoons with soul in its earlier seasons.

personally I think that gumball was a supremely funny show, probably even the funniest cartoon we've had in a while. I appreciated that a whole lot and even moreso the fact that every single character in gumball is literally, EXACTLY what they are in-universe. Donuts, toilets, CG dinosaurs... and they cover it all the time! Entire episode plots, ethics, and an endless stream of jokes about the stuff. It was never not funny and I wish more cartoons did that because if your characters are weird shit but it never gets acknowledged in-universe then what's even the point? Bojack Horseman does this even when it's not the "main" focus and it adds a lot to the show.

I kinda hate that we just...never see them together anymore. We don't see them talk or flirt or date or have an adenture together. It always feels so disconnected when you put to characters together but don't allow them to play off each other. I don't even understand how anyone can be nostalgic for Fosters. By season 3 it was a chore to get through half the episodes because Bloo was so goddamn unlikeable.

Every episode has a "plot". As in how it tells an 11 minute story. And Season 1 Gumball's stories are just kinda all over the place or directionless. I'm not saying I disliked it. But no I never really found it funny. I may have chuckled twice in S1. S2 is what really hooked me.

This problem originated in the show's second season. The first season's 2D animation was handled by Boulder (WoY season 2, some Foster episodes, Danger Mouse) and partially funded by the Irish government. Boulder animated the characters with a notable bounce (achieved with auto-tweens and stretching/squashing certain vector assets) and often used non-standard assets and asset positioning to allow the characters to do a wide range of organic looking expressions. However, the first season had production problems (four episodes were scrapped) and the 2D animation went in-house starting with season 2. When the show moved in-house, all the 2D assets were replaced and the animation style in general changed dramatically, becoming much more rigid (stretching/squashing is limited to facial assets) and almost entirely relying on standardized character assets. While the show's 2D animation has been done by another studio since season 3, almost nothing has changed except for the near-abandonment of oval eyes and the gradually heavier reliance on rigid asset swap expressions (I don't think either has to do with the change in studio).
