The first season weirdly adapts a lot of disjointed parts from all the books, and makes you think like they retconned crazy gramma out of Jesse's backstory (nope, she actually appears in later seasons). The next seasons are closer to the comics. For me, the best part about the show is how the character of Jesse progresses. There's much more meat to the plot of him being the preacher (and not just "grandma made me do so") and the topic of religious crisis is much more relevant for the show character. On the other hand, he's more morally dubious at times, thinking himself a harbinger of God's will before, well, actually finding out what God himself thinks about all of that.

God isn't an asshole. He spent most of Old Testament waging war against Canaanite, Egyptian, Babylonian, and Mesopotamian Gods while trying to keep Israel together.
Old Testament is more how he goes from El to YHVH, while New Testament is how he goes from YHVH to God.

This page really communicates the tone I think permeates Ennis works when he is at his worst. Everyone who isn't the protagonist and a few supporting cast are just plain WRONG and not remotely deserving of basic human decency.
Villains aren't just villainous, they are also secretly degenerate and therefore never deserving the slightest respect. Since they are so despicable, the worst punishment can be meted out upon them which in Ennis' perpetually-horny-thirteen-year-old-boy-mind is inevitably some sort of dick injury.
It seriously underpins the whole story damn story. Rather any sort of philosophic antithesis God ends up just being some asshole to kick in the balls.

Hitman is 100% his best. I would put those 60 issues up against anyone else's run of any comic ever. Just the right mix of "edgy" and humor and sadness.
I also enjoy his work on Punisher despite it being 200% edge.

I'd say Hitman is his magnum opus but Preacher is a close second. I love the Boys too but Hitman and Preacher are just a lot more consistent and have more memorable moments in my opinion.
