Communism, as defined by Marx, is a hypothetical system in which there is no state, but everyone shares everything just because they want to. It's obviously impossible, but that's the reason people say "real communism hasn't been tried," because, by definition, it can't be tried. Only socialism can be done, and socialism is what the USSR was: communism, but with a state making sure it actually happens.
