The 90's already had that edgy "hey kids, fuck your parents" thing going and watching burning bodies fall from buildings live on national TV just accelerated it. That, and the internet. It was cool to have issues, and a lot of this Tumblr bullcrap started on online forums back then.
So we got mass-marketed spookiness for like 8-ish years, and the only thing that's left of that now is an inheritance of self-diagnosed disorder and one or two diehard eldergoths.
