Why would the gems even want there to be new gems though ?
I mean, there's probably billions of them around the cosmos, and it's not like they'll die out anytime soon since they're virtually immortal.

Why did they make more if it didn't matter?

conquering and expansion was important to the diamonds before
but in terms of survival considering the gems don't really age, there is no reason to create new gems outside of a crisis that made gems near extinct like a massive shattering or something like that.

Well if they switched from rulers to protectors having more of them would be beneficial. And the thing with gems is they're pretty fragile to counterbalance their immortality and durability. There's no know cure for shattering as of yet and only Steven is known to be able to heal cracked gems. It's not like they can just give birth to new gems, they have to colonize planets to do it and once that method's gone so too does their ability to expand.

What is this a reference to? I recognize the story, but it just makes my head feel hollow

Blade Runner, Roy Batty's arc to be more precise.
>Roy Batty, an Android, only has a short while left to live due to planned obsolescence.
>He and a few and a few other androids go to earth to track down any designer who can help them extend their lifespans.
>Meanwhile Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter, is tracking down and killing them as androids are illegal on earth.

>He denies Roy treatment, as it's impossible to extend his life. The same scenario is implied to have happened before when he says all previous attempts to extend android life just resulted in the subject dying even quicker.

>When they meet Roy breaks Deckard's hand and chases him up a decrepid building.

It's a vague match but it is somewhat similar despite the obvious differences.

Because interestingly enough, it's the last part -about the artificial life form becoming violent in its desperation, then being forcibly teleported out - that speaks to me the most
