read Blankets as a freshman in highschool and had no idea how in the fuck it was allowed to be in the school library, then figured I'd been through similar shit by that age and so had a lot of other kids so it was probably there to help kids with shitty childhoods realize they could also do something like publish a book

They’re good because they really don’t have to give into the contemporary hype of cape comics

They're shit and I wish people would actually write stories instead of fabricated, glorified diaries about someone who's about as interesting as literally everyone else.

Attached: spinnginggay.jpg (706x1000, 92K)

Yeah, really liked Blankets. Felt real and then I realized it was autobiographical. Then I felt bad for the characters' real-life counterparts.

I really liked Maus. But somehow I feel this board no longer likes Maus this days.

Self-indulgent shwarbage.

I find more in common with fiction than I do with stuff like this. I find history interesting, though I have a natural aversion to anything made by someone who wasn't whipped as a child. I think the difference between those who went through corporal punishment and those who didn't is culpable. Like, I never had anyone interesting, enlightening, or amusingly wise in my family. Just a bunch of fuckin' mean rednecks, really. Southern Bastards and The Goon appeal to me because it better matches my personal experiences. I never wanted to read Blankets because I saw nothing relatable in the pages I flipped through, and the art was nothing special. I saw Persepolis but never read the comic. I dunno, I can't relate to the plight of women. I don't think they're capable of understanding the absolute despair men can suffer because they're so much better at maintaining friends and support groups. When I dropped out of school my father wanted to fucking kill me. Every family dinner at my house included a full volume shouting match between my father and siblings. Yeah, Marjane went through a revolution and suffered under shariah law, but the bitch has had more sex than I ever will and has had more friends than I ever will and has a better education than I ever will and her family loves and understands her more than mine ever will.

Its this 99% of the time

Hey, I never get to post this!

name one pls

Maus is legitimately good, but then again Arty put his heart and soul into that project and he's crazy on a genius level. Can't say the same for so many others, besides Crumb.

I saw Persepolis as Marjan growing up and making terrible decisions, yet her family still loved her. Even though she left them for selfish reasons and can’t return.
Overlooking your blessings to chase stupidity

Was that from the movie?

>I can't relate to the plight of women. I don't think they're capable of understanding the absolute despair men can suffer because they're so much better at maintaining friends and support groups.
That sounds a lot like "my suffering is better than your suffering"
> Yeah, Marjane went through a revolution and suffered under shariah law, but the bitch has had more sex than I ever will
Oh boy

Indeed.

>God is confusing
>I'm Selfish
>neurodivergent people are scary since they are different from me and I don't want to spend the effort to understand them
>I am different from everyone else and special, why won't people spend the effort to understand me?
>want have sex

Wow, what a deep thinker.

>But somehow I feel this board no longer likes Maus this days
not even memeing but it depends on how much you're willing to sympathize with Jews nowadays
I've seen some anons claim it being propaganda

Well, yes, is called the human experience, some people just make comics about it.

I don't doubt that women suffer under patriarchal societies. I also accept that my inability to get laid is entirely my fault. However, I have always envied the female's ability to draw sympathy and attention to themselves, to have strong emotional support, and to find connection with their community. For me it's always been
>Who gives a shit? Get the fuck to work. If you're not making money you serve no purpose. Who gives a fuck if you're sad? No one fucking cares.

Men are not as valuable as women. I'm not proposing anything should be done about this, I just don't ever seem to have much in common with any woman I've ever met, even the ones I've fucked.

Seems like you could make a comic about.

The only part I found interesting about Persepolis was the Iran Iraq war, cause seriously it was a fucked up war
Child soldiers,Human wave attacks,Trenches,Chemical warfare, motorcycle Infantry an en entire generation of Iranian men having to fight in that war

Attached: rudukea6ueg01.jpg (960x948, 244K)

I was struck by how much his father reminded me of my greek grandparents.

>even the ones I've fucked.
>inability to get laid
Somebody always has it worse,

I forgot how fucking dumb Yea Forums is.

I usually find they're interesting but nothing I would re-read or recommend to anyone. I like them best when they focus on highlighting a few isolated experiences (like You'll Never Know or My Friend Dahmer), since that approach feels more like honest memories rather then an exaggeration with fiction filling any gaps in the author's recollection.

When there's a very cohesive narrative or an overt commentary/theme, it rings very false to me. Like the facts were heavily fudged to suit a frame that the author wants to impose. And when the creator is not only writing but drawing the scenes, it's VERY easy for them to fall into this phony quality.

(I mentioned My Friend Dahmer before; I liked the straightforward scenes of memories, but it sucked when the author had to step all over his tale to give a simplistic PSA about how adults need to help teens.)

I think this genre is probably best enjoyed at a high school age, since it can make a good impact on inexperienced kids who can learn a lot from others' reflections.

Since comics can be so immersive, that's probably the best value of autobio comics.

Remember, he's not even complaining about not having sex but about someone possibly having MORE sex than him.

Back in 07-09 I was in art school in an East coast city. I actually managed to convince some attractive and interesting girls to fuck me, despite the fact that all of them were more sexually experienced than I was. None of them went to my school. None of my relationships lasted more than three months. I got bored of them and found the constant need to communicate with them tiring. I dropped out and only had one relationship since then, and a few casual fucks with okc dates. Now I don't care any more. I've lost the drive and the hope to believe that romance is worth the time and effort. I've never been in love and I see marriage as a trap. I fucking hate children.

>can't even get the phrase "human condition" right

Also depicting shallowness =/= analyzing shallowness. I bet you think reality shows are high quality cinema too.

I'm pointing out how that makes it hard to relate to them. I have no idea what it's like to be them because what they do in their life is so alien to me.

But I wasn't talking about the human condition (wich is something to do with finite life) but the experience of living every day in this world.
Most of this type of books is trying to find someone to relate in a very especific way so we might not feel as lonely in the world.

>such hostility because some people have standards
Peace be with you, user.

It seems like you had a string of casual sex and half-hearted relationships that never amounted to anything and you fucked up your career ambitions out of listlessness. There's probably a lot of women working at your local retail salt mine that have a similar backstory.

Fair enough. is still a valid critique though, especially concerning a book that has a lot of critical praise.

>American Splendor
Pretty much the grandfather of this genre. Harvey Pekar is a goddam legend and is a must read for anyone interested in comics other than cape books.
>Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary
This book is one of the best of the Underground Comix movement and one of the first to get deep into really personal stuff. Justin Green relates stories from his past, how his Roman Catholic upbringing had an impact on his OCD and intrusive thoughts. Great stuff.
>Maus
Pretty much the Citizen Kane of the autobio sub genre. It's excellent, deeply personal and well designed. It was also one of the break out "Graphic Novels" along the same time as DKR and Watchmen that lead to mainstream success a generation later.

Other good stuff:
Eddie Campbell's Alec stories. Reprinted in an omnibus format.
Robert Crumb stories from Wierdo. Reprinted in The Complete Crumb Comics #12 to #14
Sam Glanzman's WWII graphic memoir A Sailor's Story published by Marvel, of all places.
Chester Brown's "I've Always Hated You" and "Paying for It"
Joe Matt "Spent" and "The Poor Bastard". Brown and Matt were also notorious for depicting embarrassing personal moments such as masturbation and nose-picking.
Rick Veitch's dream diary comics reprinted in "Rare Bit Fiends"
Guy Delisle's travelogues such as Shenzhen, Pyongyang and Jerusalem
The Spiral Cage, by English artist Al Davison, is about Davison's experience of living with spina bifida. I think Alan Moore wrote an introduction.

There's only two reasons people wouldn't like Maus.

One is fairly obvious antisemitism.

The other is the contrarian, ultra hipster bullshit mindset of "it's popular so it must be overrated". I feel that when certain works sit for so long at the peak of the medium (Jaws, 2001, Citizen Kane, ET, for example) there's a certain type of snarky reviewer who feels that they have a responsibility to tear it down and claim it's irreverent, problematic and not very good after all.

>Look at how silly they, arent' they silly for even trying?

Capeshitters too.

I'm 30, user. The women my age in my area are either already married, single with a kid, super fat and ugly, or fucking crazy. Not to mention the abundance of fucking Christians. I doubt a bitter, cynical, self-loathing man who hates children, hates his family, hates leaving the house, and has extremely niche interests in obscure media would ever draw the attention of a woman I'd actually be attracted to.

That's just the previous user's latter example. Stop trying to stir shit.

Have fun reading boring autobiographical shit written by 20-something year-olds whos only accomplishment is getting braces. You could be reading cosmic adventures or a diplomatic fantasy epic, but I guess the childhood accounts of people who literally sit at home and draw silly little cartoon pictures for a living are far more riveting.

This is the definition of "stop liking what I don't like".

I actually just learned about Persepolis and Maus in my graphic novel course this semester. I thought they were pretty cool, a bit depressing, but cool.

All women at any marriageable age are like that. Hate to break it to you user.

Define "depth", you fucking hipster

If they didn’t have any pictures nobody would read them lol

Fuxk his reductionist bs

>When there's a very cohesive narrative or an overt commentary/theme, it rings very false to me.
That's just knowing how to write. You need to have a narrative structure or else you're just listing a whole bunch of stuff that happened with no sense of flow or consequence. Text biographies and history books work like this too.

I liked how he wasn't afraid to show his dad having vices and how the camps fucked the people up mentally for their entire life.

>perse
>(vulgar) arse, ass, asshole

:-DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

>I dunno, I can't relate to the plight of women
Are you retarded? You can't relate on someone's plight because of war because she is a woman? Not living through war doesn't stop you?

>Woman lives through Iranian revolution and ends up homeless in europe
>What a blessed life
Americans should be banned from reading autobiographical comics because you morons are too stupid to understand that authors can be kinda shitty people too, you always expect everyone else to be similar egoists like you who always see themselves rights

Cool life story brother, maybe write an autobiographical comic about it so it can be relevant to the thread

Ah yes, we should all look at "silly little cartoon pictures" of goblins instead, like adults

I've been meaning to buy the new Anne Frank comic.

Absolute garbage, from the ones Yea Forums recommends to the 'alternative' trite regularly put out by places like fantagraphics. They almost revel in being mundane. Shit like "today is the last day of your life" is literally just about some random fucking woman who thinks that time she was a whore or met some pervert in an alley is fucking interesting enough to write a comic about, these are the type of people who think they're insightful and make a podcast no one listens to. And it's bog standard for these for the art to be completely fucking trash. They're worthless stories celebrated only by other, more pretentious idiots

Just another one of the virtues we've lost as oral storytelling slowly dies.
People don't write to provide for the pleasure of the reader, they write to the extent of their own catharsis and expect to be thanked for it.

It's not about how long you do it, it's how you do it.

rent free

I love reading them, but I also love mocking them.

Attached: The Ultimate Graphic Nove.jpg (575x748, 173K)

I'm against most autobiographical comics on principle because I'm always worried that it's a cheap out for the creator.
Instead of creating a world, narrative, characters, plot and theme, the author will just pile on their experiences and make it a vignette collection or worse, make it a woe-is-me tale of suffering and victimhood (played up to 11).

Capeshit for people that think they are too good for capeshit.

This ingenious.

Finland!

Some of them are good, some are not.
Mostly they were good so I'd say I enjoyed it.

One of the best is definitely Fun Home.

Isn't the Bechdel test named after the author? I'm extremely wary of such feminist bollocks.

They can be a lovely retelling of an artist's upbringing and experiences, or they can be a self indulgent mess that doesn't end up saying anything. It all depends on how the narrative is constructed and if the protagonist/biographer really conveys how certain events/experiences changed and shaped their perspective.

That said, I do not like or wish to draw autobiographical comics. I hate drawing and talking about myself, so the closest I'll probably ever get is a fictional retelling using different stand-in characters for real life people. My life isn't very interesting either.

It is, but the whole the feminist thing wasn’t too much of a distraction for me when I read it. It was nice, the play version, especially the one I saw, was boss.

He didn't save his brother.

I need to watch this.

That's the thing though, most of the other old Jews in Vladek's community lived through the holocaust and none of them are like him. He was just always a miserly weirdo. That isn't to say he didn't have good qualities too, but Vladek's personality and work ethic weren't too affected by the camps. The most obvious example is how even though he experienced firsthand the attempted extermination of his race, he still hates black people even though he doesn't know any.

I enjoy them, but don't go out of my way for them so I'm not the BIGGEST fan.

Fun Home repels me for some reason. I understand that it's probably the best written one alongside Epileptic, but something about it makes me not want to read it again.

It's pretty good. Translates very well the charm of the comics.

I liked Persepolis and Maus and can recommend them to other people. I’m pretty sure Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol was semi-autobiographical, and I really liked that one too.

But I really didn’t like Blankets. I mean it’s fine as an autobiography, but I really don’t see the story there as warranting recommending anyone to go read. I found it mostly uninteresting and unappealing. It was one of the few books I immediately donated to charity shortly after reading because I didn’t feel like having it take up space on my shelf.

>He was just always a miserly weirdo.

I’m willing to believe that that may be true, but I still think his experiences amplified at least some of his eccentricities to a whole other level than if he’d led a normal life. Like how someone can have a somewhat manageable alcohol problem but then go through a traumatic experience and just become a complete mess of a drunk. I think that Vladek’s penny pinching got a lot worse because the camps fucked with his head.

We don’t see the same problems with other survivors in the book because everyone processes trauma differently, and some are better at hiding it than others. Some are probably perfectly normal, but I bet a few have their own weirdness that Art just didn’t see much of because they kept it private.

Of course, Vladek’s behavior isn’t excused at all by his experience and we can still recognize that he’s just plain a dick of a person, whether there’s a visible reason behind it or not.

Ashkenazi Jews are known to be racist, they mistreated Mizrahi Jews in the early days of Israel and even did an experiments on Mizrahi children and abducted some of them to their families (yes, including infertile holocaust survivors).

It would be unfair though not to mention, they later rescued Jews from Ethiopia.

>leftist propaganda where the holocaust survivor calls the black guy a nigger and is terrified he's going to steal

Attached: tg.png (639x475, 506K)

Shit

Authors are self-entitled fucks that want to impregnate you with their personal opinions and worldview
and their life isn't worth for autobiography either

Attached: 1557158390705.png (351x468, 184K)

>theater released movie
>motion tweens
Remind me again why people keep praising the franchies animation?

This is an adaption of a shitty autobiographical comic. Using this as evidence of the quality of an industry is stupid.
France > Ireland > US > Canada = Japan
This is merely the objective reality of animation

It's no excuse for motion tweens

France animation being good is a meme by hipsters.

this comic is utter shit
>when I was a little girl I did this and this and this

geezus her life is pathetic and not worth to become a comic at all
there is no story here
just some random memories

Attached: RCO019.jpg (1162x1600, 455K)

>It's no excuse for motion tweens
But you could find motion tweens from any country, my point is, this one bad movie does not somehow mean french animation is bad

>But you could find motion tweens from any country
Not in theater release movie, that's fucking pathetic

Also
>France > Ireland > US > Canada = Japan
>Japan being the last and equal to Canada
Opinion discarded

Japan makes good stuff sometimes, I think them being equal to Canada is fair, it's at least not too far behind it

>Canda the homeland of shitty animation
>Japan makes good stuff sometimes
>good stuff
>sometimes
Japan makes great stuff and have far bigger variety of animation hence more shit as well

And again motion tweens in theater release is inexcusable.

Japan >US>Canada=France

>Japan makes great stuff
Not regularly, it's been a decade since they've made anything even just good. And variety means nothing if none of it is good.
>Canda the homeland of shitty animation
It's a meme, fine things come from Canada at least as often as Japan

>And again motion tweens in theater release is inexcusable.
You're actually fucking stupid if you're basing your opinion on one film.

And how the fuck can you justify putting Japan over the US? What's your excuse for this retard?

>it's been a decade since they've made anything even just good
>Kimi no Na wa
>One Punchman early seasons

>fine things come from Canada at least as often as Japan
Kek

>one film
Again it's THEATER RELEASE movie and it's substandard.

You want to put STVF, Dyke-Ra, SU, AT, etc above Japan? You sure have a shit taste.

>Kimi no Na wa
I can't stand that fucking movie

Britain>US>Japan>France=Canada

Persepolis is very good.

>Again it's THEATER RELEASE movie and it's substandard
So are nearly all japanese movies

>Kimi no Na wa
>One Punchman early seasons
I said good

I haven't read the books but the Persepolis film is one of the coolest animated films I've seen but that's just me. Guy Delisle's books on his experiences in Burma, Pyongyang, and Jerusalem were all phenomenal as well.

Doesn't Art Spiegelman's character point out to his dad that historians are convinced that something his dad claimed to witness didn't actually happen? And his dad still swears up and down that it did. I don't remember the details but I remember revisionists liked that part.

Scan it and post it on /his/.
