X-O Manowar (1997) Part 1

A new X-O for a new medium (which never really panned out) and a new audience

No, there is no Aric in this, or anyone else you may recognize
There aren't really any Spider Aliens either

With this relaunch people were allowed to take just the name and create it from scratch. It's sort of like the DC Silver Age revamp, only results here varied and they weren't as successful as DC was.

Turok and Shadowman lasted mainly because games were being made for them. Quantum and Woody was probably the only title that didn't have a game that was allowed to be continued after the Acclaim relaunch shut down.

I kinda get why they took this approach to the character, he's the typical twenty-something "full of potential" that has several women wanting to jump his bones, basically the Kyle Rayner mold, which I can see as more marketable and appealing to the crowd they wanted to sell his comics and potential games to. Not only was Aric older, but he was literally ancient as well, so that could be a harder sell to the PS1/N64 crowd.

With that said, Ninjak is still the funniest reimagining in just how blatant and absurd it is, and we'll actually see him in this book later on.
Acclaim's take is literally the Captain Marvel/Shazam thing but the kid instead transforms into a super ninja videogame character instead. That's just so unapologetic it's hilarious, not to mention kind of awkward since he never had a game either.

There was an interview with Waid on Ain't It Cool News a decade ago that briefly mentioned his X-O:

>BM: You re-launched X-O MANOWAR for Acclaim Comics. Do you enjoying reinventing characters? Did you think the character needed a revamping or would you have been happy to have worked on the character regardless?

>MW: I had no feel for the original character, so when Augustyn and I were asked to relaunch it using just the name, we had a blast. There are good, clever action pieces in each of those issues, and I got the chance to refine my Snarky, Effete Super-Genius Character that, apparently, I am incapable of not shoehorning into everything I write.

Attached: X-O Manowar 002-008.jpg (1988x3056, 2.02M)

Yeah, that type of character was really prevalent. I definitely see a bit of Wally West here too, the last issue in particular (which wasn't even written by Waid at that point)

I don't really think it'd be that hard a sell, but it would explain why in the 90's there'd be a push toward younger 20-something characters.

Nowadays though I think people could go for the original X-O premise for a game.

When I say "a harder sell", I mostly mean from the point of view of the executives in charge
You can sell all sorts of things to a vast audience with the right approach really

The man out of time trope works really well and makes for an interesting premise usually.

>When I say "a harder sell", I mostly mean from the point of view of the executives in charge

Yeah it reminds me of Rob Liefeld pointing out that after he left, Bob Harras kinda mandated that Cable look younger. And of course there was also the push to unmarry Spider-Man because that way he'd be "young".

the pain of this is palpable. I like Quantum and Woody but I can't imagine this working out for a video game. When they did make a game they used the Aric incarnation anyway.

Really? Seems simple as hell, just fly around and shoot shit.
