The Cerebus in Hell series is pretty subpar and Dave seems to have lost his ability to write along with his ability to draw, but a remark like that is very in character for Cerebus.

Pretty much this. He's a bit like Kricfalusi. He was a very talented artist and visionary, disappeared up his own ass, and burned every bridge he had in a desperate attempt to fight off his demons.

I feel bad for both of them, but it's their own doing and I don't think either of them will ever be capable of the humility they need to escape the hells halls they've built for themselves.

That's the fun irony of Cerebus- most people know it as the comic made by that crazy misogynist, yet it has some of the most compelling, complex and fascinating female characters in comics.
Jaka, Astoria, Cirin, Michelle, all great characters, but you will hardly ever hear anything about them because of Dave's reputation.

Yeah, that's true and also sad. Now if you ever want to talk about Cerebus it's almost always about the rants and crazy writings, it's like those characters don't exist at all.
Even with the bastardized characterization, Jaka's Story didn't go anywhere. Astoria still got the most dignified ending, Cirin was still a great villain. But you'll never hear about it in favor of 'female void/male light.'

The early issues aren't as bad as I remember them being, sure the writing needs some work and it's a blatant Conan ripoff but other things like his sense for interesting panel layouts are already there.

Mother and Daughters is in that weird place where it slams you with huge blocks of text that don't really have much to do with the main story and isn't alluded to humorously like it was in Church and State, but at the same it ties up most of the loose ends that had been building and building before with nearly the same quality as the end of C&S.

Jaka's character didn't change at all though, why do people keep saying this? She was willing to put up with practically anything for Cerebus' sake and then he just flips out and blames her for everything wrong with his life anyway and he's obviously wrong to do so.
