Wtf were they doing with this movie? It had so many bizarre scenes
SUPER SUBVERSIVE
That's the shit Spielberg did in all his movies.
This movie was my childhood fever dream.
You can tell from a lot of scenes that this movie was supposed to be something else entirely, but their deadlines got pushed to the left way too far.
It's the Halloween 3 Effect, I think.
Halloween 3 was a masterpiece
It was a pretty phoned-in sequel in many aspects. It isn't even necessarily bad, just meh. Don Bluth wasn't involved in it at all, which is probably a contributing factor to the weak narrative compared to the first film.
American Tail also just didn't really need a sequel to begin with.
The laaaaaaazy eeeeeeeye
This. I was so sure at one point that I just made this movie up.
They were giving you the laaaazzyyy eeeeyyeee.
This was actually my first exposure to the series. I didn't even realize how dark the first film was until years later.
Doppo almost killed Yujiro with this technique, so it's not that bizarre a cat would do the same.
Hey boss, what's a subversive?
It was better than the first one.
Just remember, Fievel - one man's sunset is another man's dawn. I don't know what's out there beyond those hills. But if you ride yonder... head up, eyes steady, heart open... I think one day you'll find that you're the hero you've been looking for.
This
Plus the soundtrack is god-tier
It had some good songs

it was fucking outstanding and I legit pissed myself laughing when I watched it being about 7-10 years old. I watch it sometimes and fondly still.

Dude, Bluth is a great animator but he always has been lacking in storytelling.
It was so completely wacko that when they retconned it to being "all just a dream" in the next sequel it felt perfectly natural.
I mean, just look at this:

The main bad guy had a sidekick who was a giant spider who shot cobwebs out of his mouth like chewing tobacco. Someone upthread used the term "fever dream" and that's the perfect way to describe this.
>mfw it was Jimmy Stewart's last movie
What did the animators mean by this?
Movieclips used that frame for a thumbnail.

Absolute madmen.
How many times has he had full control over story anyway? I can only think of NIMH and maybe All Dogs. Some were definitely worse due to meddling from higher ups like Land Before Time which got chopped up badly.
