Wayne Enterprises has always existed as a means of handwaving just how Bruce gets all his wonderful toys; before that, it was just "Oh, his dad made a lot of money". It's not so much the question of plebs not wanting to think that wants you to believe, it's just a means of explanation. You shouldn't really mix corporate shenanigans with superhero stuff, because then you end up with Netflix Iron Fist.

Given the amounf of technology they produce for Bruce the R and D department probably has a lot of lucrative patents that's trickled down to the civilian sector. There's been multiple stories where they've been invovled with military contracts, usually as an excuse for Bruce to chase after some weapon McGuffin. Usually they're seen supporting the Wayne Foundation or engaged in the kind of non-profit chairty work that no international corporation would ever convince its shareholders to condone, if only for the fact that by spending that much money they would no longer be an multi-billion dollar corporation. The single-handeldy rebuilt Gotham after No Man's Land, that should tell you how much cahs they had to burn without any opposition from the shareholders.
The truth is what this guy says, the company exists as a means to explain how Bruce didn't blow thorugh his enitre trust fund five years into being Batman and how he can still afford to be a billionaire while owning rockets, satellites, some of the most advanced cutting edge prototypes known to man and still have spare change left over to bankroll at least three international superhero teams. That they can afford all this while still being ethically clean and not engaged in the kind of dirty coprorate shit the likes of Lexcorp is constantly shown doing is the realm of make believe, Wayne Enterprises is basically a money tree for Bruce and his family that exists as an engine for stories. Applying any kind of rational thought to it exposes the absolute dearth of logic.

If it isn't a gun he doesn't care. His company's made plenty of non-lethal military grade weaponry that he has no qualms about using, be it gas grenades, sonics, tanks and lasers.
Usually it'll be a story about how some sneaky evil people are trying to use his family's company to make a profit at the expense of his morals, so he'll shut it down. The DCAU Superman/Batman crossover was him telling Lex Luthor to fuck off when their moon exploration robot was going to be turned into a military weapon.
