That is because Jhonen's style has changed, including his coloring.

He couldn't change it up to match the fitting style of the original series?

This movie is going to be more like the comics than the show, so it makes sense that he would want to update it to look like the comic.

It might be visually different from the original, but it's still the most distinct looking thing on TV. And it's still nice to look at.

>spends a fucking decade making fun of his own fans
>every time nick decides to air zim he teases a comeback only to end up fooling them
>comes up with a trailer for a movie that will never air and will kill what little left there was of his career
Jhonen is either the biggest ruseman in the world or a fucking masochist

If they brought back the same storyboarders from the original, then it'll look great. But they hired all-new storyboarders from the current Steven Universe/Adventure Time/Regular Show school of "a medium shot with the characters floating in the exact center of the screen looking at each other and making stiff gestures while barely moving" then it will look like trash.

>This movie is going to be more like the comics than the show, so it makes sense that he would want to update it to look like the comic.

Isn't Enter the Florpus going to be just a straight up adaptation of the first arc from the Oni comic revival and not even an original story? Everything they showed in the previews were just scenes from the comic translated to limited animation.

is the comic even being written by jhonen?

>is the comic even being written by jhonen?

Nah, the head writer is the guy who wrote most of the episodes of the TV series, though (Eric Trueheart). And Jhonen acts as editor (though they have some guest writers every so often).

The comic is actually pretty decent, but the episodic goofiness kinda wore me out after a while and I lost interest. No decline in quality or anything, but there wasn't any sort of narrative hook to keep me coming back and I eventually forgot about it entirely.

>on TV
user...

I say that but I really mean "a production that is on a monitor somewhere". I just have no idea what to say that is short and snappy when including streams, kickstarters and youtube videos and stuff.

According to Jhonen the movie will start like the first issue of the comic, but then go into a completely different direction.

He meant every single word of it

He legit tried to move on, but was screwed over hardcore.

At this point of his life you make do with what you got. He returned to Zim in comics, really at a different point in his life where he gave it different treatment said

I can see that. Dib loses weight because he thought Zim had a big earth ending weapon.

At the end they did a twist where Zim had the biggest universal camera (or something) and just blasted Dib all over the universe being a fat loser. The movie will probably go with it being an actual weapon.

>He legit tried to move on,

HOW? He's spent the last 17 years subsisting entirely off of JTHM reprint and Zim DVD royalties. He produced nothing creative in that entire span of time until the Zim revival comic for Oni and the new Zim movie.

Not really "moving on" when he's spent nearly 2 decades earning income exclusively from royalties and only making new stories based on his old characters.

The vast majority of projects that enter development in the animation industry never see the light of day, user, and that goes for everything he's tried to get off the ground since Zim. He spent over half a decade on a show for Disney called Very Important House that ended up never being made, and that's just the one that we know about

Will this continue from where the show stopped?

I think there's a thing that Disney owns the right to it, and the bar is set ridiculous high for him to buy it back.

>Will this continue from where the show stopped?

If it's adapting the Oni comic (which the previews make it look like it's doing) then yes. But there's a time skip that's a lame meta joke about how Zim went inactive for years and Dib sat around watching "old footage" of Zim's past schemes, waiting for him to return and turning into a fat loser in the process.

He quoted it at half a million dollars, which would be possible to raise if another studio had a sincere interest in it and wanted to go into production with it (as Netflix and PUNY did when they bought Twelve Forever off of CN) - to cite an example from the modern industry CH Greenblatt has said Harvey Beaks cost Nick $600K per episode, so $500K for an entire IP isn't that ridiculous. But still, someone has to really want to actually make it first in order to justify buying the property.

Evidently, Jhonen's not the best to work with, both in terms of personality and in competency (he never attended any sort of animation arts training/school before landing the Zim gig and didn't know how anything worked). He apparently acts like a 14 year-old Hot Topic kid trapped in a 40 year-old's body. Blocks windows with black paper because "rar I'm a vampire no sunlight", comes in dressed like the trenchcoat mafia, and apparently during voice auditions he'd sit on the floor in the middle of the room talking to himself and couldn't make eye contact.

I think his complete inability to produce ANYTHING successfully since Zim ended (17 years ago!) has less to do with bad luck and more to do with him just being an obnoxious sperg with no actual training in how to produce animation.

...Hmm, I guess it's still worth a watch.
But a too long time skip sound a bit too much.
And any chances of Tak coming back?
>I feel the presence of the spectral Poop Dog of defeat being summoned.

Not everybody went to Calart

>And any chances of Tak coming back?

Someone asked Eric Trueheart (the writer for the comic) about Tak in an interview a couple years ago and he got super duper pissy about it.

>adventuresinpoortaste.com/2016/09/19/invader-zim-interview-eric-trueheart-warren-wucinich-and-fred-stressing-tell-it-like-it-is/

>Eric: I will drop only this misty nugget of mystery:

>THERE ARE NO PLANS TO BRING BACK TAK, OKAY?! SO STOP ASKING!

>But for the sake of all the Tak fans out there, I will add that it’s only because Jhonen thinks Tak is a great character, and he doesn’t want to bring her back simply for the sake of doing it. If — or more probably, “when” — Tak returns, he wants it to be for a story that’s as cool as she is.

>I mean, hey, we could bring back Tak every four issues and turn her into the Lex Luthor of the Zim universe, but would you really want that? The answer is no, you would not. Aren’t you glad we know what you want better than you do? The answer is yes, you do. See how good this feels?

Antonucci is a special case. Canada has its own animation industry infrastructure separate from the US landscape and politics. EE&E was made in Canada by Canadians and played by Canadian rules, so the CalArts thing really had no sway there.

That sounds like Jhonen when he originally worked on OG Zim. He's more mature now and even the voice actors mentioned this and said he grew up. Granted, now he sounds like a grumpy old man, but he's not as immature as he was before. Not only that, but like said, most of the projects he works on don't make it to the public.

He's worked on plenty of things it's just nothing he was the showrunner/creator of.

He did the character designs for Randy Cunningham and... hm. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Tak's VA confirmed to have voiced in the movie, but if it's Tak or Tak's Ship is the question.

I think the movie is gonna be great, though apparently it's only an hour and 10 minutes long.

Here's something that did make it

I see Jhonen has got better at drawing girls since 2002 and much, much worse at drawing everything else.

Somebody else drew that April.

Probably Tak's ship, since that's in the comics.

So, this is just a telly special?

Originally, but apparently Nick now sold both of the Zim and Rocko movies to Netflix. Netflix announced they would air them this summer.

If TAK is such a cool character they should just make a spin-off series with her as a main character.

I rewatch the Tak episode. Shit is practically a movie, it's also the same episode where Zim reveals to Gaz he is an alien. The reveal is so small, it goes completely unnoticed.

It's a great episode and so underrated.

>underrated.
Wot? It's consistently considered to be one of the best episodes of the series.

Remember that episode where Zim gets vored?

I think Tak coming back would be more exciting than the movie adapting a bunch of comic one-shots, but I won't hold my breath.

I always wondered how those planned episodes and Invader Dib would have ended up. They sounded too story driven and grim to be completed like that, even back then.

Gaz already found out in the Bloaty episode.

Is Dib really Mexican?

nah, Jhon just drew it better because she was going to be on stage for a short time, the same with Splinter

I wasn't aware Zim was in that episode. I'll have to rewatch it. But Bloaty right? Not the pig demon, because pig demon was already at the need of the show's run.

He's Mexican and Half-Irken.

>with no actual training in how to produce animation.
That shouldn't stop him from producing comics, but he went a decade between Filllerbunny and the Zim comic without anything new.

I want to date her more than anything.

Gaz always knew he was an alien, she just doesn't care.

Jhonen Vasquez is a lot more settled and normal in his older age.

He's not the same "johnny Homicidal manic' edgey artist anymore

>That shouldn't stop him from producing comics, but he went a decade between Filllerbunny and the Zim comic without anything new.

Exactly. And he's practically royalty at Oni Press, too, considering they keep all of his comics in constant reprint status (save I Feel Sick, but apparently that's kept out of circulation at Jhonen's request). So he could easily have published anything he wanted to do, no questions asked, with Oni during that stretch of time.

But he didn't create anything.

>I wasn't aware Zim was in that episode.

The whole plot of the episode is Gaz rescuing Dib from Zim's base because she didn't want to miss Family Dinner Night with Membrane.

Good episode.

Okay, been awhile since I saw the show.

But he is the writer on it sometimes, at least early on. The first issue, the only one we know for sure is being adapted into the movie, was written entirely by him. The following issue that continues that story was co-written by him.

Attached: sketch-1551329042207.png (1080x1503, 1.34M)

Wait, I Feel Sick has been out of circulation? I didn't know that.

>And he's practically royalty at Oni Press, too, considering they keep all of his comics in constant reprint status
You're thinking of Slave Labor Graphics, but yeah.

>(save I Feel Sick, but apparently that's kept out of circulation at Jhonen's request
Wait, what the fuck? Why? That comic was great.

Cute and Best Ship.

He also worked on David Fincher's first attempt at a Heavy Metal anthology film

No, Bloaty x Sizz Lorr is the best and cutest ship.
