Luke wasn’t a miserable failure. Watch the movie again. He was old and had a moment of weakness, but by time he got ahold of himself it was too late. Kylo was in a fragile place and took that moment of weakness as a sign pointing in the wrong direction. Maybe even being manipulated by Snoke the entire time we don’t know.
