Current Grant Morrison GL is a good start and as disliked as he is, Johns’ Lantern is always good for beginner readers, though you could start Morrison’s without too much difficulty

Search out emerald twilight. It’s basically when Hal flips his shit after Cyborg Superman destroyed Coast City. Iirc it’s issues 48-50 of the third run of GL

Yes it was but that doesn't suddenly make him a shit writer. A writer can have a bad run from time to time. Otherwise he'd have been shit since his Teen Titans run.

Read some Silver Age for a general background.
Emerald Dawn, for his updated origin story and the fall of Sinestro.
Emerald Twilight for his fall from grace and maybe DAROS for further context on what happened to Coast City.
Zero Hour for his damn near apotheosis and to see the "villain" win for once.
Final Night for his redemption.
After that he becomes the Spectre, not sure what run.
Then you move to John's run starting with Green Lantern Rebirth/Recharge.

I've never read a good Johns run. If love to, but I'm starting to have doubts at this point. People jerk his GL hard, but it's about as bad as everything else I've read.
