Why is it so perfect after all of these years?
Rango Appreciation Thread
One of the few times where "ugliness" added to the aesthetic. Also, best soundtrack.
>youtube.com
It had the purity and intent of an independent film with the funding and resources of a larger studio.
Visually interesting, well-placed, snappy writing, and genuinely intense action scenes. How the director screwed up Lone Ranger almost immediately after Rango, I'll never know.
Only clue is that Verbinski wrote at least part of Rango.
Lone Ranger was written by the same guys that did Pirates 2-5, National Treasure 2, and G-Force.
burned himself off?
also we did not need wild west jack sparrow
anyone have those rango OCs that got drawn up? I recall a cat with pistols. Had a pants and no pants version.
Made me want to fuck the lizard girl.
Character designs by Eugene Yelchin. Rango is one of the best cartoon designs I've ever seen. This is how you use funny animals.
Watched this a few days ago, was shocked by how good it was. Perfectly describes how it feels.
exploding bats
A top tier villain.
Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio wrote those film, but the also wrote Aladdin, Shrek, and Pirates 1
Sometimes you just get worse, and those guys haven't written anything good for fifteen years.
Frankly I'm worried about Godzilla vs Kong.
It truly was kino and underrated at that.
Based and redpilled. It's such an underappreciated jewel. Superb writing, incredible setting (combined with talking animals, no less) and a great exploration of themes present in all stories through the scope of Western.
Also, I lose it every time I watch the chase scene with the bats and shit.
you guys worship this movie but the humor is fucking unbearable
You can always watch Big Bang theory reruns to satisfy your shit taste, user
>tv version edited out the word "hell"
Heck is scary user, and the last thing you need in a dark movie theatre is a scary snake spooking you with scary words
it's literal BBT-tier humour, you humongous retard.
Just the fact that you think that reveals your utter lack of judgement, taste, and intelligence
>That fucking amazing lighting inside the saloon
That shit was some Kurosawa level use of shadow. I've never seen anything else like that scene in all of animated cinema.
Hell, I've never seen anything like Rango in regular cinema either. It gets away with shit you could never pull off in live action.
Stop arguing like little pansy ass posturing hawaiian shirted chameleons and post concept art you durn varmints.
I tell you h'what those durn city folk comin in our threads and bitchin about their HUMOROUS SENSITIVITIES
Why it's enough to get my gall bladder goin I tells ya
We don't need no high falutin' outsiders in the noble town of 4dirt!
Why lookit this feller! He done got eyes what's lookin in differen' directions and he ain't bitchin half as much as you folk.
CONSARNIT FORGOT MUH'IMAGE
Is that a Pepe cameo on the left?
I wish the new star wars movies had an action sequence half as thrilling as this childs cartoon.
At 0:15 that mouse(?) looks like Duskdude
To this day, whenever i pour myself some water, I always say "Water, Mr. Rango... Water."
My sister kept telling me to watch this but I avoided because of Johnny depp faggotry.. But I finally watched it recently and I'm glad I did. The rest of the voice cast and how confidently ugly it is more than makes up for depp.
It's reference-filled tripe that fails as a kid's movie and the only reason you guys like it is because you're pathetic manchildren.
Stop being autistic.
bird dead, snake come.
>pathetic manchildren
>autistic
There is just so much to like about just this clip. The eyes expanding as the water gets poured, the physics of the water, the swaying fabric of his hawaiian shirt, the light coming through the pane glass in the background.
Depp works pretty well as an insecure autist who is trying to figure out who he is by acting it all out
No you stupid manchild.
It's okay. I barely remember it, honestly. Never got all the buzz.
I wish he was in the film more. He has what, 15 mins total of screentime at best?
Better to leave you wanting more than overstaying his welcome.
I'm not gonna lie I rolled my eyes slightly at your statement 'cause it's been a long time since I've seen Rango (since it came out actually) and thought 'yeah I'm sure it's about the same quality of a modern star wars action scene and...no it's definitely a cut above. It's fun, bouncy, instills tension, and does everything an action scene should so, yeah sorry for doubting you.
Be honest anons, was this a BTTF 3 reference?
youtu.be
>silent as protagonist walks in
>laughing as they as they ask for water
>that one dude sounds straight up like one of the animals
There is so few lewds of Angelique
> "You ain't got the nerve."
> "Try me."
Scene still gives me chills, good shit.
could have used some fanservice
I'm pretty sure that trope is older than BTTF3.
>Johnny depp faggotry
what did Johnny Depp do? I'm not updated on celebrities
He did a great job on this movie
Sure but that's what helps his mystique.
Damn good 15 minutes they where.
I hope there's an alternate dimension where TVTropes is actually useful for this kind of shit.
Acting-related, he's got a stigma that he hasn't been "trying" with his roles ever since about when he got cast as Jack Sparrow.
Scandal-related, he's an alleged spousal abuser and also not a very good person overall.
>he's an alleged spousal abuser
at this point every male person in hollywood gets this kind of accusation
>Banjo Ride of the Valkryies
It shouldn't work but it does.
Because Shitsar didn't make it.
There's always that one faggots who has to ruin it for everyone else.
>vargposting outside Yea Forums
So...You just post that image whenever you're feeling like a pissy little contrarian? Cause I've seen it in a dozen other threads.
Let it go man. Hating things other people enjoy will never make you cool. I'm sorry, but that's just how it is.
One last bullet for one last outlaw

>cantina is inside a jug
I was rather surprised that this dude wasn't voiced by Geoffrey Rush. He really reminded me of Barbossa for some reason.
Confirmed to be a hoax, and that Johnny Depp was the actual victim of domestic violence in the relationship. It's all in the case's court file, which you can check online.
Yes, but also the exploding bats and the sequence as a whole. I think it's my favorite from the movie.
You aren't alone on that.
>Acting-related, he's got a stigma that he hasn't been "trying" with his roles ever since about when he got cast as Jack Sparrow.
I mean, for the most part he hasn't. He poured a lot of heart into Black Pearl, but since then he's been sort of lurching from one lukewarm film to another with only a handful of exceptions in between. He keeps getting dragged into mediocre Tim Burton projects which he clearly only takes for the paycheck, and he's looked more and more catatonic with each Pirates sequel to the point where I imagine he spent most of the shooting for Dead Men stoned out on fucking opiodes.
It's the hat.
I'm glad I actually was into animation and movies at the time when this came out, and I actually saw it in theaters
I really do appreciate it
Same user
>tfw ILM will never make another animated film
>I think that chromosome pool's about dried up.
This thread has made me want to rewatch the film, luckily it's on at least one of the streaming sites I have. This is going to be kino.
starwars IS for children
>the van Cleef mustache
Perfect
Why would it become bad after a couple years? A love letter to old westerns can't really age that poorly, seeing as it's not based on modern trends
Best character.
artbook is visual porn
>on vacation
>hotel has free netflix
>convince rest of extended family to watch it on a whim
>most of them think cartoons are only for children
>they all thoroughly enjoyed the movie
I really wish Rango took off more than it did, it was a damn fine film
>most of them think cartoons are only for children
you're part of the problem.
animation, it's animation, technique, not genre.
>most of THEM think cartoons are only for children
Reading comprehension
you call Rango a CARTOON.
THEY see Rango as just a cartoon. I never said that I saw it as such. Again, reading comprehension my dude.
By your reasoning live action superhero movies are animation because they feature so much CGI, which is animated. Semantics aside, people will see an animated movie with anthropomorphic animals as a cartoon, and cartoons are for kids.
Picture what kind of people go to see movies at the theater, it's families with kids and young people between their teens and early 20s. None of these people are interested in something like Rango, the audience for this movie is mostly people with an interest in animation as an art form and people who would get the western movie tropes. So a tiny slice of adults.
Yeah. It's not part of a larger franchise. It has no tie-ins. It's completely original. It's obviously not focus-tested to death. And it dares to be ugly. No big-eyed lolipop-headed characters here.
BASED
How come the bird and Jake are scaled to be the correct size compared to Rango but all the other animals are the same size as him? (like a rabbit, a boar, a few other birds.)
It just plum don't make sense I tells ya.
So that they're both more threatening to the townspeople and Rango.
Figured.
This was my one issue with the film. Not that it was a big deal, but it seemed like cheating that the sexy French fox was the same height as a chameleon.
This is still honestly one of the best looking CG movies i've seen. I can't think of anything that comes close to looking as good as Rango
but that's wrong you retard
>It gets away with shit you could never pull off in live action.
Which is the reason we have animation to begin with.
Why were the evil henchmen all foreigners?
Definitely. To me at least, it largely feels like most CG movies that come out all seem to blend together due to having almost indistinguishable styles.
no uwu
Western trope. The bad guys aren't usually from around the town, because that way loyalty won't get in their way.
Well, it's another trope in Western (and plenty of other fiction) that the hero is a stranger or foreigner as well, since it embodies the idea of the legend or savior to a much greater degree. In the case of Rango, he's not really a hero, but someone who is simply reacting (acting) to the world that he is accidentally thrust into. The film really nails plenty of good themes in interesting ways.
More often than not, the bad guys are also from eastern cities, showing civilization coming to interfere with the west's way of doing things.
Johnny Depp can actually be a decent actor when fucking Tim Burton isn't involved.
I honestly thought they got Clint Eastwood for this role, the impersonation was on fucking point.
