Showing a character's feet is rarely compositionally important for a cover. Look through the DC solicitations for August that just came out and I guarantee you will find a foot on maybe a third of the covers at best.

His anatomy is all fucked. None of his action sequences shown any sense of kinetic or dynamic force. At best he can sequence a series of poses none of which ever convey any sense of motion or flow. He is inconsistent even when drawing the same figures on the same pages and he invents shapes just so he can somewhat convey what the fuck an object is.

I give Liefeld credit for coming up with his own unique visual vocabulary. In that sense he’s no different from Kirby, Timm, Mignola, and his style is no less “incorrect” than theirs. His work is distinctly his, and it appealed to 12 year old boys back when comics were supposed to do that. He did the job they hired him for and he did it well. Then he got rich and stopped growing.

This is true. The real problem with Rob's work is that it's just not that nice to look at. I wonder if a decent colourist could have made a decent job of "polishing the turd".

You're right, I think Liefeld is just another bad case of stylizing before actually having a proper handle of anatomy.
Only difference to today's even worse stylized art is, that at least back then you had to be somewhat aware of what human anatomy looks like to get work. So his work wasn't complete ass like some of the stuff we have out there nowadays.
Now any kind of a noodle physique gets a pass because people are so used to seeing that crap.

Had he continued to grow he would have gotten past his limitations easily. Instead he stopped improving and hasn't gotten past his shortcomings. Not that he had any reason to do so. Not like he had a shortage of work.

Hawk and Dove proved that a good inker could salvage his work. However, it's mostly because Kesel would draw in the hands and feet that Liefeld didn't draw. He also made vertical two-page spreads without telling the other guys working on the book, and they had to them to make horizontal pages.

People forget early Liefeld had other problems that made him a bad artist outside of aesthetics.
