Her Characterization starts as awful bitch and only goes downhill from there. At the start she comes across as an untalented, yet condescending bitch with an unwarranted sense of Self-importance and an Obsession with Sasuke who constantly abuses Naruto, who, being a socially maladapted pariah, thinks is normal and is head over heels for her. Seriously, the amount of contempt she shows for this little boy who has done nothing to her is so extreme, that at a point where she is shit-talking about how he’s orphan, Sasuke, the ultimate adolescent Brooding edgelord, actually comes down off of his high-horse of arrogant, detached apathy, to tell her to shut the fuck up and stop being a bitch.

And she never gets better, or learns a single thing about empathy. In fact she actually gets worse as the series goes on! We later learn that she had actually burned bridges with her childhood best friend because they both had a crush on Sasuke, who neither of them had even talked to at that point. Later in Shippuden, after Sauce goes full blown traitor and has to be hunted downZ she incapacitates Her entire team, leaving them at the mercy of any enemies, just so she can get closer to Saucegay and not have to try and kill him.

And then, the shit icing in on the trash Cake that is her character, is shown when she tries to manipulate Naruto’s (thankfully at this time former) crush on her, to keep him from going after Saucegay, complete with crocodile tears and everything. And this was all After the girl who ACTUALLY liked that sperg almost just dies for him. Even Naruto, who’s first idea of friendship came from Mr. Bleeding edge and this bitch, told her she was full of shit and that she needed to stop lying to herself.

And the worst part is, she’s STILL considered one of the good guys after all this!

I’m not going to pretend Naruto is good, or even Okayish, but Sakura Haruno is without a doubt, the worst part about the show.

The thing is though, those moments of calling her out happen once in a blue moon, and aren’t nearly as critical of her as they ought to be. The other 99% of the time, the series acts like her behavior is not abbhorent.

She’s “interesting”, that she pioneered new directions for how low a female deuteragonist can go, but watching her was rarely satisfying. Aside from being a bitch, she rarely actually did anything helpful or useful in any way, despite that fact that she had multiple “arcs” that were about her becoming less useless but didn’t actually go anywhere. And since she rarely is ever truly receives punishment or consequences for her actions, other than slowly but surely closing herself into the unsatisfying life path she ends up in in Boruto, it never delivers any sense of satisfaction or catharsis.

Honestly, I can accept Mabel dooming the world, if the story actually worked with that. Heroes screw up and unleash apocalyptic events all the time.

Boruto weren't written by Kishimoto so it's basically the same thing.

The first part sounds completely fine, they were a bunch of kids and Naruto I remember was supposed to be obnoxious and immature, it makes total sense that a young girl would be attracted to the mysterious loner and hate the loudmouthed doofus who was constantly trying to impress her. Sasuke calling her out sounds like a good character development moment, where she'd start to realize that she's being immature by refusing to understand what Naruto had gone through.

And I didn't read past the timeskip but I do remember them all becoming better friends as time went on, and her asking Naruto for help was supposed to be the moment that highlighted their friendship rather than your interpretation of it being manipulative somehow.

I guess it becomes a little worse when it's revealed that literally everyone treats Naruto like the anti christ so her being mean to him seems more despicable than if she just found him abrasive like it originally was in the early chapters.

I can't speak for anything later on but I found her to be a typical judgmental girl who grew up and learned not to be like that FROM Naruto himself, so unless she becomes straight up evil later on I don't see where the seething hatred comes from.

What are you talking about “revealed”? Naruto being treated like the Antichrist because of his birth and the kids getting it from their parents was IN the first few chapters. It’s one of the earliest parts of the series. That WAS how it was originally.

I liked that part of the story, and I liked that use of Sakura's character. It's a shame her attempt to kill Sasuke was so pitiful Kishimoto could have easily wrote an interesting Sasuke vs Sakura encounter/fight with the justification being how weak Sasuke was at that point. Kakashi vs Sasuke could have been fun too but it was practically all off-screen.
