TASTE

I am trying to get into some comics and am looking for "patrician-tier/TASTE-tier" comics to dig into? I really enjoyed the classics and the anime that pop in those 3x3 threads; same with literaure. But recently I realized how gorgeous some comics can be. I started reading a few online but don't want to rob myself of the experience of reading them on nice physical copies.
Is there a chart/list out there of really good comics, bordering on snobbish taste as those end up usually being fairly good.

A few that I am considering getting are Ody-C, Marvels (with Alex Ross illustrating), Sandman, God is Dead, Tokyo Ghost and a few others. Any tips for comics that are gorgeous aesthetics while also having a good story? But not overly long aka can easily fit on my bookshelf

Sometimes there are rabbit holes that aren't worth getting into. Comics are like that. Imagine following a rabbit made out of shit and crawling into his shit-smeared labyrinth den, and getting lost in the foul darkness. Once you reemerge on the anus-end of the den you will be empty handed, turd like, and you will realize that the rabbit never existed at all. It was all hype, smoke, mirrors and latent homosexuality. You were the rabbit all along and you've been had. This is the point in which you've wasted a shitload of money and time on this inanity and you'll be in company of many other butt bunnies who've been had before you. They're a protective and jaded lot, and they scat masturbate each other over capeshit, putting on airs about how awesome and gangsta it all is.

But it's not gangsta, it's not gangsta at all. This obsolete and sterile medium has nothing to offer to anyone. You run OP, you run and don't look back.

>alex ross
get kingdom come

anyway heres my recs
>grant morrison JLA
>dark knight returns
>batman: year one
>watchmen
>tom king mister miracle if you enjoyed watchmen
>grant morrison doom patrol

Well, I would argue that getting comics with the idea of "What's the very best?" is not ideal if you havent read any at all, that being said I feel that those you mentioned are well worth at the very least chekcing them out and then considering buying.
I would also recomend checking out George Perez run on Wonder Woman seen that you so are avid of the Classical Greeks, oh and are great, I havent read Mr. Miracle, too, but again you may not "get" why are they so great at first read.

If you like Alex Ross art look into Absolute World's Greatest Heroes by Paul Dini and Alex Ross. Can still probably find it for $50 or less than $75.

Another universally loved artist/comiccreator is James Stokoe.
Look up Orc Stain and see if you'd want some like that.
If you like Godzilla or Alien Stokoe has done comics miniseries for both of those that have been great.

Is this pasta?

Also I'll shill till the day I die Witch Doctor.

A supernatural comic about a doctor fighting demons and monsters, but not in a "the hidden world of magic that cannot he explained in mundane world's logics" kinda bullshit, but like an actual doctor going after them like they're Cthulhu sized viruses and there is a scientific/consistent cure for them (even if that cure is a magical broadsword).

Only 2 volumes but I still hold out hope for more content.

...

>I am trying to get into some comics
Stop. Just turn around and go do something else with your life. Comics are not worth it.

It probably is, considering it feels easily [find/replace] you could have for comics and it would work for other things.
Especially since it doesn't go into actual specifics wrong with the medium, just says it is bad.

>Top 10
>The Metabarons

OP, make sure you're interested in "patrician-tier/TASTE-tier" comics for good reasons, not just because you want to show off shelf porn or feel like you're better than those who read serialized superhero antics. Both have a valid place in this world.

That said, I strongly recommend Moonshadow by DeMatteis. It's a fully painted comic book billed as a fairytale for adults, and it's one of the few comics I read yearly.

My other recommendation is Enigma by Peter Milligan. Short series that plays with your expectations of the genre. Cerebus is another strong recommendation for something worth owning, because as a comic, it plays with the medium in ways that can't be seen digitally.

You should really read some of the more standard chart recommendations first though. A lot of the time, your enjoyment of something is enhanced by knowing just how it stands out from the crowd.

More than likely, it's just a lul-randum tripfag trying to force one.

>ASS
only if op has read and is familiar with superman

anyone who recommends mostly cape comics is not in the borderline snobbish tier. Especially this retard

Attached: 1353636796451.jpg (2292x2700, 2.45M)

Superhero comics have dominated the American industry for the past eight decades and you're going to discredit them with a chart you saved online, made by somebody else back in 2009, full of many titles you don't even recognize?

The Auteur

>"patrician-tier/TASTE-tier"
back to

Love and Rockets (Gilbert Hernandez)
Shadowland
Beauty
Paying for It
The New Adventures of Hitler
Breakdowns (Spiegelman)
The Last Temptation
Cages
Why I Hate Saturn
A Jew in Communist Prague
Little Tulip
Frank
Icehaven
The Cowboy Wally Show
Road to Perdition
Bottomless Belly Button
King of the Flies
A Drifting Life
The Boondocks
Mr. Punch

I recognize most of the titles, and it does include a fair number of cape comics. But to ONLY recommend cape comics, and to recommend shit like Kingdom Come and Mister Miracle in a thread asking for "patrician-tier" recommendations betrays how pleb you are.

I don’t wish to offend anyone, but
Master of Kung fu
Kamandi
Nexus
Savage Sword of Conan

ah yes the classic, fax from sarejevo, kino as fck my fellow patrician

>Jonah Hex
>JM Dematteis Spider-Man
>The 'Nam
>The Question
>Sandman Mystery Theater
>Hellblazer
>John Bryne She-Hulk
>Peter David Hulk
>Judge Dredd
>Hellboy
>Lobster Johnson
>Lemire Moon Knight
>Seven Soldiers

Ask yourself whether you're listing your favorite obscure comics, or good comics to recommend to a beginner who has no idea what they're interested in?

I'd contend that using "pleb" as an insult betrays far more.

sounds to me like you want stuff that really pushes the medium so here are my recs

>Kabuki - by David Mack
one of the best examples of how comics can be working at multiple levels to tell stories, there are some pages that are simultaniously telling 3 stories.
>Ring of the NIblungs - by P Craig Russell
based on the Ring saga of old norse myth, or in this case the Wagner opera version. This is his masterpiece and it's a wonder that he is able to converse a musical piece to a silent medium
>Promethea ; Alan Moore, JH Williams III
basically his dissertation on magic, JH Williams III brings a whole new idea to how you can construct page layout and use them to tell the story. Pic related
>From Hell - Alan Moore
a story about Jack the Ripper, one of his most celebrated comics
>Borgias - Jodorworsky and Manara
straight up salacious, exploring this family and really going over the top on their corruption and incest tales.
>Transmetropolitan - Ellis
Ellis is the comic writer who is the most into futurism and this documents a future that is kinda looking familiar now. It's a reporter exposing corrupt politicians, and everyone is a terrible person

Attached: Promethea mobius.jpg (1280x987, 258K)

that's because you're a pleb

>no u

I recant.

>>ASS
>only if op has read and is familiar with superman
I disagree

I read it as a first introduction to the character and it was perfect to describe the character, part of its story and motivations. I wanted to know more about him after that.

Ody-C is absolute fucking garbage, the artist is great but look for something else by him.

The Sandman absolute editions will fit right in with those philistine Franklin Library bindings on your shelf, so get those. Cités Obscures is a comic series inspired by Borges and Calvino and written by a guy who got his diploma right out of the grubby hands of Barthes. From Hell will massage your sense of superiority over plebeians and Bacchus is a more obscure work by the same artist which is about pretentious things like wine and extensive vacations in Greece.

I actually like all these comics unironically but your commemorative plates-tier bookshelf triggered my shit right up

the Sandman omnibuses would actually fit better

Not OP but thank you for this recommendation

You'll get more from it if you're familiar with Supes, sure. But as a starting point? It's like distilled Superman - there are very few books that present a hero as succinctly as ASS.

Yikes, get a life!

Lol a couple of my recs are in there

people said the same with manga and anime, but I found a lot of worthwhile adventures and am glad I partook even after feeling like I had outgrown that sort of thing

These are extremely helpful; thank you so much. The suggestion on the George Perez Wonder Woman is also exactly the sort of thing I was looking for, thank you so much

Thanks, I remember reading that years ago but would definitely like to revisit it and own a nice copy to flip though. ALso I had seen Witch Doctor on some obscure forum when looking for doctor type of content. I actually just finished med school last year so thing related to medicine, even tangentially are especially fun for me

I actually put All-Star Superman on a to-check-out-list when doing some preliminary research. So I think I'll definitely be picking it up now. Will look into the others as well.

I like the snobbish-tier nonsense to start off with as there seems to usually be legitimate reasons for people elevating them before they became obnoxiously snobbish to display. From there I can usually figure out if it sounds like something I'd enjoy based on the premise. But it worked amazingly well for anime and legitimate literature and thoroughly enjoyed them to the point I find a noticeable drop in quality most of the time when deviating from a commonly accepted canon. I figured comics would be similar.

Thanks, this is precisely the sort of list I was looking for. A lot of titles on there I have seen pop up elsewhere in searching for good titles to acquire. Thanks

Thanks for a concrete list as well; I'm honestly surprised by how nice Yea Forums is compared to virtually any other board when people straight up ask for recs. Thanks a bunch.

Tanks a ton guys

Yeah definitely the sort of thing I am looking for. Have heard both Kabuki and Transmetropolitan highly recommended so I will be extra sure to check them both out. This is an awesome list

damnit; that's kind of what I'm afraid of. A lot of the comics with gorgeous art seem to have story or narrative pretty awful, hence this thread to get some more solid direction. Thanks for the heads up though

I started reading most things on an ereader but really dig reading them on those nice gaudy pages and the sense of satisfaction seeing them on the shelf after I finish reading them. Like an outward reminder of the works I've consumed and held in high regard which trigger nice memories. That being said, thanks for the recs I unironically am interested in these a lot. Les Cités obscures looks especially amazing visually

recs are recs, checking those out all the same
Thanks a ton for the recs; appreciate them

>patrician tier
just say patrician
>TASTE-tier
just say TASTE
you don't have to follow every word with tier. That's really stupid-tier, and cringe-tier. A really dumb way of talking-tier
Almost as stupid as trying to read things that are "patrician" so you can say you know comics instead of looking for things you'll actually enjoy

You've got to at least try Sandman. I think it is the go-to "patrictian" comic.

>don't recommend things you enjoy or I will call you a pleb
this is what philistines actually believe

philistines actually believe Kingdom Come is a worthwhile comic

This is a terrible shelf thread. No one gives a flying fuck about how sophisticated you want your shelf to look, you pretentious retard

Personal enjoyment has nothing to do with being patrician.

The art is great

>they're hostile to the arts for enjoyingthis piece of art

Neither does pretending to enjoy things you don;t like to make other people on an anonymous imageboard think you're "smart" or "cultured"

Which comics in this thread are people only pretending to enjoy?

Alex Ross is a wonderful painter, but he's completely awful for superhero action comics. Far too static.

devaluing the meaning of art by holding up a bad work as one of the best in the medium is hostile to the arts

later says >I recognize most of the titles
he recommended things he doesn't recognize (not to mention how many of them he probably hasn't read), while condemning the other guy for recommending things he probabky has read and enjoyed

>devaluing the meaning of art
And I'm sure you can explain the definition of Art in some way where those works are magically "objectively bad"

>condemning the other guy for recommending things he probabky has read and enjoyed
Because they don't belong in a patrician thread.

This is a rec thread, not a shelf thread, silly

Attached: IMG_20190515_223635175.jpg (4320x2432, 2.57M)

What makes something "patrician" user?

Don't reply to tripfags

yes, how dare I provide an extensive list filled with comics I've read and enjoyed just because I haven't read every single one. I should've recommended some mainstream capeshit, that would surely fit into a patrician recommendation thread.

urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Patrician

I like the look of the shelf itself, and being sort of empty but with a few things makes it look better, something pleasantly modest about the whole thing.

Is Kabuki worth getting into? If so, what's the version to get? The library hardcovers?

I really didn't like his cover for the OG Doctor Strange omni and was sad that the far superior Ditko one was the variant.

Attached: 01e39446a0975ef1a2a4e8bdee545c6c.jpg (900x1352, 212K)

Here are some books I consider pretentious that I think fit what you're looking for. I really like some of these so I don't mean it as an insult.

Anything by Chris Ware
Daytripper
Hellboy (reading or having Hellboy but no other capeshit is a classic hipster move)
Berlin
Duncan the Wonder Dog (pic related)
Nausicaä

Attached: image.jpg (1236x1600, 435K)

>both the definitions here are making fun of the concept
funny, but not really helping your point.

The right page of that spread. These aren't the only empty speech bubbles in the book either.

Attached: image.jpg (1236x1600, 478K)

>yes, how dare I provide an extensive list filled with comics I've read and enjoyed just because I haven't read every single one
then recommend the ones you have enjoyed instead of posting massive list. hell if you were feeling generous you could have actually explained what was good about a few to help someone know what they might be in for

What's wrong with having a sense of humor about it? You're so dour.

Reading patrician comics doesn't make you a better person that someone who doesn't. It just means that you have different tastes than people who read pleb comics, casual comics and entry-level comics. And to remind yourself that you're not a better person, you should never forget to take the time to have a laugh at your own expense every now and then.

>Hellboy
>pretentious
u wot

You haven't explained what makes something a pleb or patrician comic. I wasn't complaining about UD being funny, but it doesn't create the distinction you're implying exist. It makes fun of people who thinks there is one.

Dude just get what you're interested in. If you look at something and you know you're going to read it as soon as you get it home then it's a good purchase. The collection grows with each one and in the end you'll have one that reflects your taste which is better than having one perceived as good taste. Also Love & Rockets, obviously.

it's specifically because of what I put in parentheses because I've seen it often

There is no concrete definition to divide comics into those categories. Here is some light reading for you:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_know_it_when_I_see_it

For the purposes of only this thread though, let's try this: Big Two superhero comics by A-list creators or starring A-list characters are not patrician.

Maybe you can make an exception when the art is actively offensive to casuals, like Sienkiewicz.

thanks for the recs; I've seen Daytripper come up several times and the premise looks interesting

the others look awesome as well.

I am generally interested in comics for the art since I can generally find better stories in just normal books; but at the same time I don't want to read a comic with great art but can't keep me engaged due to shite story. I am getting a feel for what is well-regarded/canon good stuff and from there picking titles that have appealing art/premises to me and going from there. I definitely have no intention to read or buy a comic to appear patrician as comics in general are anything but in the eyes of most people who come by my flat. But same goes with anime and manga and video games, but I've found plenty in each of those mediums well worth the time investment which were incredibly rewarding experiences

what are some good xmen comics and comics concerning galactus and the silver surfer for noobs to those characters?

Attached: galactus.jpg (716x1024, 255K)

When will you shut up you fucking weirdo

Galactus and Silver Surfer:
Lee and Kirby's original Fantastic Four
The Ultimates by Al Ewing
Silver Surfer: Requiem
Silver Surfer: Parable

I've honestly never been too into X-Men, but I liked New X-Men by Grant Morrison.

>Big Two superhero comics by A-list creators or starring A-list characters are not patrician
That's a retarded definition that excludes some of the greatest works of all time, especially considering OP said he's considering all star superman after it was mentioned in the thread

Yep.

All-Star Superman is extremely entry-level and casual, not patrician. Please understand, I'm not saying it's a bad comic and I'm not saying you're bad for liking it. But yikes, my friend, get some perspective.

stop being a faggot

All-Star Superman falls under "art is actively offensive to casuals." As does Frank Miller before you bring up TDKR.

This is what casuals actually believe when they try to insist that they aren't casuals.

You simply can't come up with a single non arbitrary definition of your retarded buzzword and now you have to struggle so hard to defend your ineptitude that you have to perform the herculean leap of logic that explains how All Star Superman is not patrician.
you two can't even agree on what "offensive to casuals" even means. Almost like it's complete nonsense to justify elitism.

anything he likes is patrician and anything he doesnt is plebian

>your retarded buzzword
"My" retarded buzzword? What makes you think it's mine? OP started this thread asking for patrician comics, and you're the one barging in here with non-patrician comics. You're in the wrong thread because you did a piss-poor job of reading the OP.

But please, go on and tell me all about what makes ASS a patrician comic, in your opinion. Something for those with "snobbish" taste.

That's literally what you and the other poster are doing. You like All-Star Superman, so you insist that it's patrician, and it hurts your feelings when you find out that it isn't.

As for my own behavior... where did I say that I dislike All-Star Superman?

>a patrician comic
It's simply some of the best storytelling in comics, a true representative of what the medium has to offer, something that those with even the highest of standards can enjoy

I like All-Star Superman, but I'd never call it patrician.

What makes you an expert on the medium? So far, your knowledge is only about two publishers and one genre in one country's industry.

All that is just a wordier way of saying "it's good."

ass has been cited as one of the best superman books by critics and all that shit. its universally acclaimed as being good. its popular for a reason you dolt.

itt: sheer, unchained infinite autism

Oh good, I guess Star Wars is patrician too now. All you need is to be popular and acclaimed by the "critics".

glad we agree

You should always buy what pleases and entertains you, or if you want to be challenged, that as well. There's no point in spending money to please others or to meet their 'standards.'

You can certainly use such lists to inform yourself, but you can easily find all this stuff on line on a readcomics type website and then decide what to purchase

christ

>That's literally what you and the other poster are doing. You like All-Star Superman, so you insist that it's patrician, and it hurts your feelings when you find out that it isn't.
You're the one so painstakingly ass mad that you're going on a tirade about some guy posting ASS that you are still making mental leaps to justify some definition that excludes it, even less one that excludes it without excluding a bunch of shit in the list you posted like Gotham by Gaslight, Plastic Man, Batman Year One, Batman Killing Joke, Batman Digital Justice, Watchmen, or Swamp Thing

But sure Sam and Max (great by the way), is somehow more fitting of the completely undefined term "patrician"

>going to comics for "patrician tastes"

go to books for patrician tastes dumbass

>What makes you an expert on the medium?
What makes you one, because I've never claimed to be
>So far, your knowledge is only about two publishers and one genre in one country's industry.
Almost like this conversation started with you complaining about ASS because you think it makes you look cool on the internet and I've actually stayed on topic

imagine being so contrarian you have to do mental gymnastics to convince yourself some of the most best selling and popular titles are bad lmao

>tripfag is a weirdo
ok

I didn't post that list. Calm down, there are 33 posters in this thread.

Where did I complain about ASS?

no one is shit-talking ASS

>sales==quality
I'm sure you're a big fan of Bendis then.

not him but the general consensus is that patrician=good and pleb=bad. you are saying ASS isnt good, therefore you must think its bad

Is metropol good? I meant to read it a long time ago, and then I read Pencilhead and Eddie Socket, which both turned me off to McKeever’s work. I’ll probably get to it eventually, but how comparable is it to his other works?

yeah, everyone knows Identity Crisis and Civil War are some of the best comics of all time

This, hating capeshit is dumb, but only reading capeshit is even dumber.

>I'd contend that using "pleb" as an insult betrays far more.
Plebeian is a direct antonym to patrician, that’s how English works you moron.

bendis is fine on some titles

I've been saying this whole conversation that I'm not criticizing ASS.

If you didn't read my posts, just like how you didn't read the OP, that's your fault, not mine. ASS is not a bad comic, but it's not a comic for snobbish tastes.

all the flaws in his "worst" works are just as present in his "good" works.

so youre a snob?

>”not a substitute for going back to fucking school”
This joke is too funny to be in such a bad post.

The best comics to get are the ones you enjoy
and the ones you like
and most importantly the ones you want

>just like how you didn't read the OP
You didn't read the thread, OP literally said in another post, that before he made the thread, ASS was already on his list of things to check out This isn't about anyone misunderstanding the thread. This is about you attempting to redefine patrician to be anything other than what it is is commonly used for on the site, and elsewhere, things that are commonly accepted as the best

thank you wise user

Sure, why not? You should never be ashamed of your tastes. Even when I tell you that your tastes aren't patrician, you shouldn't be ashamed of that. As long as you enjoy reading the comics that you read, you should continue reading them.

Use this knowledge wisely, my son. But also buy The Puma Blues, it's really pretty.

>Big Two superhero comics by A-list creators or starring A-list characters are not patrician
They literally are not. That’s not what op is asking for and you know it.

>commonly accepted as the best
Plebeians are the commoners, patricians are uncommon.

What you're talking about is the opposite of patrician.

but the shit i like is generally received as being patrician

"commonly accepted" is literally the opposite of patrician

Please I beg you to stop- you actively make normal capeshitters look worse by speaking.

Attached: 94AFAADD-84B9-40B0-9AC3-6547C3DD5525.jpg (1148x585, 282K)

"Generally"? If the general readership has all read it then it's entry-level.

ill check it outeven though i mostly stick to superheroes

>I actually put All-Star Superman on a to-check-out-list when doing some preliminary research. So I think I'll definitely be picking it up now. Will look into the others as well.

i disagree

Then be certain to read the most patrician of superhero books, Starman by James Robinson.

Attached: Starman.jpg (900x1350, 225K)

OP is new to comics and they're easy to fool. You ought to know better.

>"commonly accepted" is literally the opposite of patrician
No, contrarian is the opposite of commonly accepted. Works aren't patrician because only a few people like them, they're patrician because their quality is of a rare caliber, a high breed, they are patrician works, while lesser works are plebeian.

If plebs and normies like it, it's bad.

No one is so new to reality that they don't know Superman is a big two character. OP knew Superman is popular, but ASS is a work held to a higher regard that most other comics. It is... patrician

If I like it, it’s bad.

Patrician works are patrician because only patricians read them.

When a work is beloved by the plebeian masses, it's an entry-level, casual or plebeian work. Unlike though, I do not believe that plebeian works are bad. Hopefully they are being facetious.

plebs and normies will like whatever, there are so few things you can find that are universally hated among normal people, and even fewer of those hated things will be liked by anyone more invested in the medium

>Starman
Based user.
Starman was the best C-list character series I've read.

Attached: Hereafter.jpg (962x458, 133K)

I wish I had a friend like The Shade.
Or rather, I wish I was The Shade and had friends like Jack and Matt.

>plebs and normies will like whatever
You've barely explored comics if you think this is true.

Once you start to move beyond comics that revolve around fight scenes, you'll uncover hidden gems that, no matter how hard and how often you recommend them, the plebs of Yea Forums will refuse to even try.

The only real patrician knows that they are a pleb.
So nobody using the internet.

>Patrician works are patrician because only patricians read them.
>because only patricians read them
>he thinks he himself is patrician
He finally admits

Attached: it's real.jpg (609x566, 54K)

Yeah, my tastes are uncommon. What else is new?

Oh, wait, you're still strawmanning that it's about quality?

Attached: file.png (368x312, 167K)

wew lad

So surely instead of misusing the word patrician, you can just say obscure, and instead of calling yourself patrician you can just say you like things that are obscure

but then he cant feel all high and mighty

Has Jack popped up anywhere in Rebirth? I miss the guy, I know he got the best and well deserved ending but I want to know what he's up to damn it!
Also has the Shade made any appearances at all since nu-52?

My tastes aren't really obscure though.

As an example, my favorite comic of the last 5 years was
>a #1 New York Times Bestseller
>one of New York Times Book Review's 10 Best Books of 2014
>a 2014 National Book Award Finalist
>Finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor
>Winner of the inaugural 2014 Kirkus Prize in nonfiction
>Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award
>Winner of the 2014 Books for a Better Life Award
>Winner of the 2015 Reuben Award from National Cartoonists Society

It's just that nobody on Yea Forums will discuss it because plebeians aren't interested in that sort of stuff.

This should be a pop-up whenever a new ip visits Yea Forums.

I posted this in yesterday's /shelf/ thread. I tried to get 10 books that most people wouldn't talk shit about.

How'd I do, anons?

Attached: shelf.png (1181x889, 2.1M)

No clue about either, having finished the Robinson series I have had absolutely no desire to look for any further material that would cheapen it.

This guy pays for prostitutes.

>citing awards to justify his taste
You're far more pleb than anyone else in this thread, I hope you realize that.

paying for prostitutes = true patrician

>American Splendor
so close

Is Alec good?

>my tastes are uncommon
>My tastes aren't really obscure

>a #1 New York Times Bestseller
>plebeians aren't interested in that sort of stuff
One of these days you'll be coherent, and maybe just a little consistent

Uncommon isn't the same as obscure, and critically acclaimed isn't the same as beloved by the masses.

>fetishes, fetishes and more fetishes
Tell me more.

I remembered some people on Yea Forums hate AS.
>any further material that would cheapen it.
True. Though, I would still like DC to reference the Starmen again. Haven't seen guys like Mikaal or Gavyn in a while (even though they are pretty cool).

I'm only demonstrating that it's not obscure. You might want to look at the people insisting that ASS is patrician because it's critically-acclaimed.

Go ahead and find me some discussions of it on websites for comic enthusiasts, like Yea Forums.

WEIRD HOW IT DOESN'T SAY UNCOMMON HUH

>a #1 New York Times Bestseller
>as beloved by the masses
This isn't critical acclaim, this is normal people buying the book en masse
The people who bought it might not be on Yea Forums but that's a quite a lot to be a #1 best seller. A lot of normal people

Love & Rockets is made by two brothers. One brother likes fat breasts and fat asses, so over several decades all his characters grow fatter. The other brother just likes giant breasts, so he over several decades he forgets his other characters and focuses on one family with giant breasts. Also BDSM, muscles and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

Animosity. It’s not really fantastic, but I like how meticulously it explores its concepts. I’ve never read the spinoffs though.

Attached: AB2063D0-98F4-4D11-8873-E452AAA86F90.jpg (676x777, 211K)

I'd bang Mikaal, honestly.

What's wrong with American Splendor?

yes, though desu I haven't finished the whole thing yet guess I'm a pleb

thanks user
Honestly, Rocketeer is one of the few true god-tier capeshit I've ever read. I wish there were a dozen more volumes by him

>The people who bought it might not be on Yea Forums but that's a quite a lot to be a #1 best seller.
Not for comics. The standards for charting on that chart are lower.

Sounds like an incredible experience. Thanks for enlightening me.

>Also BDSM, muscles
Picked up.

>Rocketeer is one of the few true god-tier capeshit I've ever read
Do you have an opinion on Wild Cards? I’ve always mentally connected those two books for some reason.

You'll want specifically the work of one brother, Gilbert "Beto" Hernandez. Muscles are mainly shown off in the small town of Palomar, by the female sheriff. Palomar has a new resident with giant breasts named Luba, and BDSM content is shown off best in digressions to Luba's American sisters.

Thanks user!

being #1 still means being higher than all the other comics, maybe all comics are uncommon then

Wild Cards, as in the GRRM series?
I've read the first book and enjoyed it well enough. It's a cool concept - shared universe capeshit novels by various writers. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but I liked it enough to say I'd eventually read more, but still haven't.

look at all this uncommon shit

Here is the first part of the storyline that you want.

Love & Rockets - Heartbreak Soup.cbz
www77.zippyshare.com/v/lS2E7QrI/file.html

I don't remember if muscles or BDSM are in this particular volume, but Chelo (the woman who eventually grows muscular) and Luba (the woman whose sisters love BDSM) are in it.

not weird at all actually

Attached: file.png (669x547, 28K)

You're such a nice man, user.

Yep, that’s what I was talking about.

Maybe not strictly thread related, but what is the comic strip that features numbered entries on strange or otherworldly features of normal town/city?

Cool I figured. The one thing I forgot to mention is there IS a character that's Rocketeer-esque. The early stories are set ~WWII I believe, but it quickly moves through the 50s and 60s. You should check it out if you dig that kinda thing though.

>uncommon shit
No, those are best sellers, for like, multiple weeks, persepolis is just a bit further down and that was popular enough to get a movie, most comics don't even get so much as an ad

>Witch Doctor.
I'll agree with you if they ever finish it.

>240 weeks on the list
A comic that charts for 1 week still gets to hold the title of New York Times bestseller, but only a fool would think it's as common as the comics charting for 240 weeks.

>What's wrong with American Splendor?
nothing, but some plebs don't like it

>still doesn't say uncommon
>not even in synonyms
so you gonna come to a point anytime tonight

>not well known isn't the same as uncommon in this context
You're being disingenuous
So how about you show where anything says "patrician" has the same definition as uncommon, or any other definition you've pulled out of your ass

Okay so basically what you're saying is being on the NYT bestseller list means it's not obscure, but not common. But also being on the NYT bestseller list means it's super common.

Got it.

Attached: file.png (360x75, 3K)

Look up plebeian.
>noun: a commoner
>adjective: of or belonging to the commoners

If patrician isn't plebeian, then patrician isn't common.

Okay since you avoided doing so [pic related]
>If patrician isn't plebeian, then patrician isn't common.
It's not commoner, commoner doesn't mean common. It means ordinary people. Because the actual definition of either of these words has nothing to do with their taste in media and your distinction has been completely and entirely arbitrary, simply because you want to call yourself patrician.

Attached: file.png (660x377, 15K)

I never said you were the same person. How about you respond to the post instead of trying to be clever?

>Cités Obscures is a comic series inspired by Borges and Calvino and written by a guy who got his diploma right out of the grubby hands of Barthes.
I have never been more interested in a comic before. You really know how to sell comics.

>I like the snobbish-tier nonsense to start off with as there seems to usually be legitimate reasons for people elevating them
The difference is a matter of time. Comics evolve out of one another, it's the nature of having an industry dominated by two companies struggling to out-compete each other, and farming talent from a limited pool. Anime is vastly different, where every series is virtually unrelated, and the "greats" stand out as examples of the best in their genre. With books as well, it tends to be the same, as they're generally solitary affairs, and the literary canon has grown so large that it's virtually impossible to have read everything.

Meanwhile, comics are insular, and essentially a new medium. In theory, I could read every major comic written in a decade or two. Now imagine growing up in the 70s or 80s. It's very easy to see how writers and illustrators would be influenced by one another.

Take Sandman, which is lauded as one of the greats, a work that you'd recommend to someone who doesn't even have interest in comics to enjoy. Sure, it's great, and they might enjoy it, but the reason it's truly great is something you won't really grasp at first.

What I'm trying to say is that you may enjoy it, but you won't love a lot of these recommendations. The stories I enjoy most now are the ones I hated in my childhood. It's the nature of the genre, so don't force yourself into sampling the cream of the crop. Just read good comics for now, and you'll learn what makes them great on your own.

And people should stop trying to recommend obscure stuff that's a pain in the ass to buy as well. Everyone's forgetting this is a recommendation thread for books that are worthy of print.

What is there to respond to? You're disingenuously trying to suggest that a comic on the list for 1 weeks has the same sales as a comic on the list for 240 weeks. Be serious, please.

>Okay so basically what you're saying is being on the NYT bestseller list means it's not obscure, but not common. But also being on the NYT bestseller list means it's super common.
No one is saying both those things, two different people are saying two different things retard

I suppose uncommon should be a synonym here by your logic

No shit, it's Raina. Literally everything she puts out prints money.

Why is Immortal Hulk so shit? People are acting like it's this generation's Sandman or something.

>Is Kabuki worth getting into? If so, what's the version to get? The library hardcovers?
Sorry, late to the thread but I am the biggest Kabukifag on Yea Forums yes it it worth getting into cause it is one of the best uses of the medium out there. However, collecting it is shit. Dark Horse fucked up the formatting so that you have to buy the origional Circle of Blood Trade cause the Library edition skews everything and for Kabuki it is important to keep the correct proportions otherwise the story doesn't work. But they fix it after Circle of Blood. So basically you have to get Circle of Blood and then get all the Library editions. It's shitty to have to double buy something but it's the only way to read the comics. Sorry, and fuck you Dark Horse...you should know better

Member BAN CAPESHIT guy? I ‘member BAN CAPESHIT guy.

Not the point he said that stuff was uncommon. To become a bestseller, it simply cannot be uncommon

Just bought Circle of Blood from Amazon for 5 eurobucks, shipping included. What am I in for?

No one's saying or acting like it's "this generation's Sandman" whatever that's supposed to mean.

a bent book, probably

Yea Forums literally fellates it nonstop when it's not even scary
>ooohohhhhh he smiled he never smiles how scary

are you begging me to post the copypasta?

Oh no, now my reading experience is foreverally ruined.

different user... post it

Only if you post the below one as well.

#1 antonym for patrician: common
Um, user...

This will be my final post on Yea Forums.

How can anyone think that this is scary for real ? How can anyone take seriously a horror book with Joe Fixit as a supposed to be frightening monster ? How can anyone see Joe Fixit as frightening for real in this book ?
"Ouh, Joe is smiling, so unsetlling, this is so scary guys..." why are you lying to yourself like that ?
You guys are just forcing onto yourself the new fade there will be in this hivemind of a board, with the blandest, tamest, most classicly safe comic book there can be, while your selective outrage is shitting on Bendis' Young Justice for things that would be praised if they were written by someone else, but NOOOOOOOOOOOO you have to shit on it even if it's good because the hivemind dictates you to do so !!!

No wonder you can't get laid, but guess what ? I got a girlfriend now. For the first time of my life after 25 years I finally got a girlfriend, and all that nerd fuss has become so irritating since.
I'm just leaving for good now, I had plenty of fun with that board but I'm done. I wish you to get girlfriends to, maybe it will open your eyes about the hivemind that is destructing your self, but sadly, the hivemind is probably keeping you away from being able to seduce anyone, so you're most likely trapped in a vicious circle, and sadly, there is no Savage Dragon to save you from it. I just hope that this message will maybe help you to think by yourself a bit more and to get a girlfriend to.

Enjoy your book.

I told you last night, you leaned too hard into the bait. One volume of Alias and one of Sex Criminals and I really would have believed it.

And everything is fine now.

It should have been all Sex Criminals

I unironically liked SC volume 1. Volume 2 was one of the worst comics I've ever read.

The CartoonNetwork block parties are patrician, actual fucking underrated gems

Also the League of Legends comics are going to be on all the recommended patrician reading list in a few years

Attached: League Of Legends - Ashe - Warmother-047.jpg (1988x3056, 1.42M)

I intentionally leaned into the bait, even put my Hot Mexican Love Comics there. And even did the 132 with Sex Criminals. I wanted it to be a troll post, not a bait one. But I found I liked Sex Criminals much more after Volume 1 cause it stopped relaying too much on comedy and dealt with actual mental illness. I liked it when they broke the characters up and started dealing with the fuck up of a character he is. Not everyone will like a messy plot like this but I do, cause the messiness feels more real

Riveting dialogue.

That looks like crap.

and if you haven't already read the artemis fowl GN yet OP i'd get on that, though it sounds like you would have come across this already if you were looking for patrician works

I know Yea Forums doesn't like this comic much but I love it, it's partly cause I just love high fantasy and world builidng

It really depends what you like. Do you like simplistic art styles or realistic ones? Do you like writting over drawing? Do you like fantasy, realism, drama, surrealism? Thinking something is "patrician" is kinda retarded, to be honest, just read the comics you like and have a decent explanation why you like them over other things.

I tried Tokyo Ghost, just kid bullshit, don't even try it. A lot of anime is just
>shyboi
>cute girl shyboi is sexually attracted to
>shyboi gets changed by something
>shyboi has to fight someone
>shyboi expresses feelings to girl
>girl like shyboi
>shyboi now just a boi

Maybe Toyko Ghost is different but those first two books were boring as fuck. IF I were to suggest a couple.. We Stand On Guard, Black Hole, God Loves Man Kills, Fun House, anything Junji Ito. Those are about the only ones I've rated 5/5 on goodreads. I enjoy Crossed but it's more of a guilty pleasure.

What's that? Looks interesting.

No, that's accurate for Tokyo Ghost

Post was based until this
You do not need a single justification for why you like something or think it's good.
If you're going to have an argument about it for some reason, sure, but you can just say something is good or bad and have no obligation to anyone but yourself to understand why (to yourself because knowing why you like something can help you find more of it)

I think I have put my finger on your problem.
Your friends recommend you shounen stories (ages 12 and up) and you don't like them because you're not part of that demographic. What I recommended you is a seinen (20's and up), and you most likely are part of that demographic.
Maybe you will be able to find things you enjoy if you keep this demographic distinction in mind.

Dank Whore is dying so they're not reprinting shit one and that means inflated prices. Same thing with some of the Usagi trades, good luck finding Duel at Kitanoji in non-Saga format for less than Fuck You dollars.

>People who think capeshit can be good and consider Grant Morrison and Alan Moore or whatever to be good writers are the people who think Great Gatsby is high literature
This is interesting because you’ve obviously connected two completely different sorts of people on the sole basis that you dislike them both.

Audiobooks only serve one purpose and that’s allowing me to shove as many warrior cats books as possible down my gullet in a single day.

Also Mythology is inferior to The Medieval Myths.

If you don't like Zot, that's one thing. But calling McCloud talentless is straight up ignorant.

I stand by it. His comics about comics are the worst kind of ignorant hackwork and his worship of ligne-claire style is clearly based on nothing more than being a lazy, talentless fuck.

Agree with this, anyone who really admires Fitzgerald's writing would likely want to bludgeon Moorefags to death with a style manual.

I wouldn't consider Nausicaä pretentious, just stupid.

>Anime is vastly different, where every series is virtually unrelated, and the "greats" stand out as examples of the best in their genre.
Anime rip each other off constantly.

20th Century Boys
Some later Tezuka stuff like Buddha and Adolf
JoJo
Try stuff by Jiro Taniguchi
Stargazing Dog

welp, glad I own them all. Dark Horse is fucked though

Why do you faggots have console wars about western comics and manga/anime. Both have their strength and weaknesses.

Cool, so you've never read Zot, then? Because it has nothing to do with Making or Understanding comics, and he doesn't use the ligne-claire style. But congrats on bringing things up just to prove you know something, I guess.

This is the bookshelf of someone who does not read.

The same reason people have console wars about literally everything - they wanna be right.

He seems fun.

Yeah, that lower shelf...

I've read all of them except aristotle's poetics, one of the plays in the Euripides book, and a few random short stories in the Chekhov short story collection. I do not understand why people just assume you don't read stuff it it's the classics or in nice bindings. I have a shit load more nice bindings below as well but I posted pic of top shelf since it has the manga I own on it. Stop projecting breh

>scottmccloud.com/1-webcomics/zot/zot-01/zot-01.html
>this is not ligne-claire

>webcoming that came out 10 years after the book in the picture
Good job, user - you played yourself.

you know that's not the original zot, right?

Don't worry user, we all think you're smart.

>even when hip hop is good its trash
You've managed to say something more retarded than I thought was possible. I'd love to hear about your collection of obscure and transgressive noise

>Bach is obscure and transgressive noise
>Django Reinhardt is just some German douchebag playing the cordless drill

you forgot "fnar fnar"

>I only listen to classical music and jazz
>all modern music is trite
I really hope you're 14.

I’m legitimately impressed.

>I do not understand why people just assume you don't read stuff it it's the classics or in nice bindings
Because a lot of people use classical literature as decorum in their homes.

that word does not mean what you think it means

kek based Yea Forums poster correcting grammar

Oh fuck, I didn’t realize.

As long as we're all following standard decoration here it's fine with me

anyone know what's happening with the flash deluxe edition 4? booksetc said it's out this week but they don't have it instock and i can't seem to find it anywhere else in stock either

don't say DC is trolling with me and cancelled the rest of the HC releases

More realistic that people would just be grunting in a battle than tossing out quips like Spidey.

>It was written by Steve Murphy
I like tmnt adventures but is mostly mediocre.
Is puma blues really good?

>am looking for "patrician-tier/TASTE-tier" comics to dig into
Well then you're shit outta luck, you ain't gonna find any here.

What is this, a Defener for ants?

It just looks like it's all for show, to give you a pretty bookshelf. If they were well-worn, heavily-creased paperbacks I'd believe you actually read them.

i started buying nicer bindings because I wanted my books to last longer than my paperbacks were lasting lol. I definitely prefer the aesthetics and they serve the functional purpose of retaining their form after being read, and often cost about the same or barely more than their paperback counterparts.

But that's not the point of the thread. The point is to keep building a list of some comics with great aesthetics and good stories

after doing some googling they did infact cancel it, why they did when it's one of their bigger series i have no idea

You can start with the Surfer catalog like Requiem and Parable are worth and add the Lee and Kirby Silver Surfer Fireside Press graphic novel to the list

There's the Galactus vs Ego saga in Thor #160-162 then 168-169 and you see a glimpse of Galactus' origin. A recon reprint was published as Super-Villain Classics #1 in it Gruenwald and Byrne retool see detail of his story, see this comparison

marathon.bungie.org/story/Origin_of_Galactus_comparison.html

further more the Englehart Silver Surfer material makes for a great read, as Ego is considered an Elder of the Universe, you can see Galactus battling the Elders in vol. 3, #1 - 19, and 48

Strange Tales II #3 by James Stokoe
Galactus: The Devourer #1-6
Nova vol. 4, #13-15
Byrne era Fantastic Four #210-212, 242-244, and 257 which carried over to Epic Illustrated #28-36 known as The Last Galactus Story

Lately the last couple of issues in Waid's Dr. Strange had a good appearance by Galactus, not the first time they dual other clashes include Fantastic Four #143-144 and Dr. Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #42-45

I would recommend working your way through the Marvel Graphic Novel series from the 80s. Yea Forums doesn't really appreciate good art, most people just follow characters they like and read whatever they can get with little regard to writing quality or artwork. That's why good looking comics are so rare, most people will buy any kind of shit as long as it has their favorite character.

Sandman is very good, as is Promethea. I've also been enjoying Monstress and Lady Mechanika. And pretty much any Elric books are also good.
