DC has never really been an innovator, preferring to just copy and "refine" established concepts. For much of their history, they've been mimicking Marvel because they're selling better. If you give them another dragon to chase, they might improve. Maybe.

DC having these 'deep' stories have always been carbon copy of marvel or attempting to be as deep as marvel. The new 52 was full on edgefest that early 2000s marvel was famous for.

Except unlike DC, marvel saw the new trends and embraced the hipster bullshit. Now DC is playing catch up again by taking marvels old hipster talents while marvel is doing something new again.

And most effective way for that to happen would be for WB to shutdown DC in house and license out the publication rights to another company much like they flirted with the idea of during the early 80's. It wouldn't be Marvel because they're considered a competitor where it actually counts these days, but I'm certain somebody would license the rights.
