Yes. Tone-wise, both the books and movies have that "Malcom in the Middle" kind of vibe. Also, for people saying the protagonist is a dick, duh. Kids are fucking assholes.

When I was a kid, there was some fat girl who wanted to hang out in our group of friends and at first, we let her. Then she started to get really annoying and whenever we wanted to ditch her during recess, we would just run to the other side of the big playground because she hated running since she was a fatass. She eventually gave up and stopped hanging out with us.

These books came out after my time so I never read them as a kid, but I did read the free online version once after seeing it discussed on Yea Forums. I found it pretty compelling, though probably for very different reasons than if I’d’ve read it as a kid. Pretty good overall. But I dunno if I’d actually want to recommend them to a child.

The Elliot Rogers parody was a lot funnier and more enjoyable, though.
