Help

I wanna get into marvel comics, since DC seems way too complicated and i like Spiderman better anyways, I've mostly been on Yea Forums for the cartoons, but now that I'm trying to get into Actual comic books, what would you recommend, I'm not ignorant either, i just haven't read stuff that isn't from the 50's, but I did own one encyclopedia marvel book if that counts

comraderecs is an old tumblr full of Yea Forums recommendations , hasn’t been updated in a while , but current marvel books I’d recommend is Immortal Hulk, and Doctor Strange by Waid

They’re both shit shows of canon, user. That’s your first mistake. Look for good stories with characters that interest you, and don’t feel intimidated by the decades of canon from either publisher. You’ll pick up most of the important info as you go

Neither of the big two are complicated if you are recommended decent things. Be open to both. You also would do better learning that there are more, arguably better, comics from third parties and not cape related.

Your actual problem stems from being more specific on what you want recommended to you. What are you hoping to get out of this comic? Something to make you think? Something to indulge a fantasy world? Something suspenseful? Something political? Something that makes you introspectful? Something where the art is more important than the story? Or do you want to be a mouth breather and just want basic bitch cape comics where people in colored underpants slam into one another? Not saying all cape comics are, just a large amount is and it is what is eaten up by the majority of people. Even Yea Forums. But the good stuff usually isn't.

>DC seems way too complicated
Stopped reading there.

Rereading my own post makes me wish to clarify. There are good cape comics too. I didn't mean to sound like I am shitting on the genera, in fact my favorite comic arc ever written is cape, just be open other things.

Not OP but I'm kind of in the same boat.
I've never been to a comic book store and I rather not look like an autist. Do stores get issues the same day they come out? Because Immortal Hulk #17 comes out tomorrow apparently and I'm interested in buying it.

Yes. Every LCS gets their new books every Wednesday. Be smart and try before you buy by catching up on the Wednesday Win-o-thread. You aren't just jumping on at 17? I assume you have been reading up to that point from the story times on Yea Forums or something?

You don’t necessarily have to go a store I guess, there’s usually a storytime

Pick something with a #1 on it and read it. You're not dumb and it's not hard to get.

Wednesday’s are new releases. If you’re interested in trades (which are volumes with complete arcs/stories) use instocktrades.com or alternatively use readcomicsonline.com to save cash until you know what you want.

>You aren't just jumping on at 17?
I've read up to this point through less than legal means

Keep doing it then. Wait till a TPB comes out and by then if the arc is over and it was worth the money buy it. The idea of paying 4 dollars + tax + storage + travel for something that at any point could turn into drek is 10 types of stupid. I should know. I did it for decades.

Buying a comic is like literally putting money down the toilet as sadly none of them hold any value. The second you walk out of that LCS it drops to 0. If you have to support a dying and totally fucked industry because of its medium and modern day business practices by buying it at least with a TPB it is easier to store. Now if you want my money you have to fucking earn it.

I don't know man, I'm mainly just looking for interesting concepts, stuff that's creative and fun to look at, I'm more of a character interaction and good concept type of guy, somethin' fun but I don't avoid serious stuff

Oh you should check out Major X!

What's that about?

Rob Liefeld crafts a masterful tale of time travel which will, undoubtedly, impact the X-Men for years to come.

Additionally, the artwork is second to known. Furthermore, there are a generous number of variant covers and additional prints of the first issue, so you shouldn't run into any problems finding a copy.

I really hope the mini-series gets extended into a full series and is drawn exclusively by Rob. Personally, I want all my characters drawn with two left feet and wonky perspective.

Well with
>interesting concepts
>creative
>fun to look at

Try Clive Barkers Next Testament. God of the Old Testament comes back and demands to be shown what mankind has accomplished without him. The world is then reminded that Old Testament God the Father was not that chill of a dude. Cool art, great concept, talks about Christianity without shitting on it (incredibly rare), made mother fucking Hellraiser.

He's fucking with you. Unless you want to give money for a Liefeld book.

BREIF HISTORY OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE:

>Captain America fights in WW2 alongside Nick Fury and Bucky.
>They win Cap disappears
>About two decades later Four scientists get fantastic powers from space, and become the worlds first super team.
>A few years later Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive Spider.
>Around the same time, Tony Stark is captured in Vietnam and forced to build a robot suit to escape.
>While all this is going on, crippled Dr. Donald Blake learns he's actually the powerless manifestation of the MIGHTY THOR.
>Hank Pym hits his wife Janet.
>Bruce Banner is hit by Gamma Beams.
>Tony forms the Avengers
>Eventually they find cap frozen in the arctic and revive him. He takes over the Avengers.

That's pretty much all you need to know to get started. Check out a nearby comic shop and pick up some Jack Kirby stories.

You joke, but I fucking love the old EXTREME and WILDSTORM books, Major X is better than most of the crap on the stands today.

He still can't draw feet.

Thank you very much
Oh that actually sounds amazing thank you a lot

Thanks a lot man!

That's just a stale meme.

I got into comics from Ultimate Spider-man. I would highly recommend it. A good place to dip your toes in the marvel universe. It's very dated in early 2000s pop culture however, so be warned. There's even an arc where Spidey is pissed about the Sam Rami Spider-man movie.

No problem. The link posted has both a lot of good stuff and but there is also a good amount of drek mixed in as well that just because it was a big title it is considered "good". For example, Dr. Strange the Oath is on the Strange list. One should eat their own shoe before saying that is a good Strange book. There are a lot more to cape comics than most give credit for too. They can be incredibly insightful and even relate to the readers own world views. If you want two good examples of character defining insightful cape stories also try:

All Star Superman: Penultimate summary of who is Superman and what it is like in the shoes of the man of steel.
>In his writing of the character Superman, Morrison identifies different aspects of his personality, stating, "'Superman' is an act. 'Clark Kent' in Metropolis is also an act. There are actually two Kents, at least – one is a disguise, a bumbling, awkward mask for Superman. The other is the confident, strong, good-hearted Clark Kent who was raised by his surrogate Ma and Pa in Kansas and knows how to drive a tractor. I think he's the most 'real' of all."

Lex Luthor Man of Steel: Penultimate summary of why Lex hates Superman. Full of Nietzschen views on how the presence of a Superman is the death of mankind and innovation. With art that is to die for that pushes home the way Lex views Supes as a monster.

There are more to capes than guys in colored underpants hitting each other. I could write a novel on my views of how Thanos is a beautiful mix of Don Quixote and Charlie Brown. Which is why his story should have ended with The End and the MCU is a blight on comics.

Feet can in fact point in other directions than horizontal and forward.

The only comic I own is ultimate x men number 1 so sure, I'll check ultimate Spiderman out, the videogame was pretty good

>Nietzsche

Alright I'm hooked.

>One should eat their own shoe before saying that is a good Strange book.
What's a good Strange book to start with then?

it would be impossible to do one of those on current Yea Forums, too many shitposters.
we are doomed to have only dated Yea Forumsmmendations.

Marvel is actually harder to get into due to a lot of the first two decades being filled with reprint comics from when they were Timely/Atlas, meaning you're sifting through a ton of bullshit trying to figure out where the real content is and ending up getting lost if you try to go back, combined with the single continuous continuity compared to DC's reboots every 20 or so years.

I feel like there's alot of cosmic shit that needs to be filled in here. Like Galactus and Asgard and and probably the X-Men.

Honestly, it's good to just pick a good run for a character you like then follow along through all the spinoffs and crossovers and such. Start in the 80s for sure, that's where the good shit is at.
This, DC is set up so that even when it gets reboot, certain important events are left in-canon for the new universe. Everything in Marvel is canon and every character has died 10+ times.
