Something people gotta understand is that in the character design field a lot of the early designs are intentionally really out of left field before really defining what they want. In that vein I doubt this was ever a design they were GONNA use, so much as this was an example of a direction they could go. A lot of early character design stuff is casting a WIDE net at first and then narrowing down the handful of good designs later.
