I actually feel like the Mario movie did it better than most. The Mushroom Kingdom is an actual setting of its own, we spend considerable time in it, and it's developed and we have the characters adventuring through it rather than just reacting to it.
Plus the stuff in New York is more or less spent on establishing the various players divorced of how it might contrast with the Mushroom Kingdom.
