Is it just me, or is Garfield a meme character near the level of Pepe? He's literally the source of a shitton of internet shit.
>Garfielf
>Garfield Minus Garfield
>Lasagna Cat
>Fist of the borf star
>Gameboy Garfield
>Garfield kart
What's the deal?

of those i'm only aware of garfield minus garfield and lasagnacat. making fun of garfield is funny because it's an incredibly shitty comic while also being one of the most popular of all time
Oh shit I was gonna make a Thread but forgot- dude finished his Gorefield work.
Really though- where the hell did any of this start? Like what’s “meme 0” here?
pretty sure g-g is the earliest garfield meme, also the only one to be acknowledged by jim davis
wait'll you find out about the interne'ts secret underbelly of dilbert memes op
>"Nermal is working for the government"
>Super Lyman
>the credits song about lasagna
>literal Heathcliffhanger
kino
"Garfield minus Garfield" was the first off-kilter Garfield variation I encountered. The oldest strips like that originate from early 2006.

Their predecessor for all the "creepy Garfield" content might've still been in the source material, though. There was that storyarc where Garfield imagines that he's been abandoned alone in his home, and that "Garfield: His 9 Lives" TV special and the comicbook.
If something is unoffensive and wholesome, it is fun to corrupt, most people see Garfield as wholesome and unoffensive.
Paper Townes is the best borf star part for the record.

The meme goes way back to 1988 with the Nine Lives of Garfield, where one of Garf's incarnations is a lab animal with shape-shifting abilities.
reminder that garfield is just a shitty knockoff of heathcliff, which predated it by 5 years
yeah that's what i had in mind
>there’s probably an alternate timeline where this whole AU thing was kept and Gorefield is a legitimate interpretation of the setting by the author themselves
Damn
Reminder that just because both of them include a similar looking character it doesn't mean one is a ripoff of the other.
Garfield wasn't even the protagonist of Garfield originally, it started out being more about John.
ah so it's an original character do not steal situation, i get it
also the comic is literally called garfield, which is the name of the cat... just saying
And all of it is reddit tier
He's more like Shrek. Something that's a cultural icon recognized by people all around the world, but when you really look at them they're bland, inoffensive and unrepentantly commercial. Not bad enough to laugh at for being bad, but not good enough for it to really make sense why they're so popular.
So you have these things that are basically popular for being popular, literally everyone knows them. So taking their predictable situations and twisting them is funny, both in the sense it's unexpected and in the modern ironic internet humor way of something being funny because it's unfunny.
>Is it just me, or is Garfield a meme character near the level of Pepe?
no
The Garfield stuff has actual effort put into it.
What, no Realfield?
Garfield is unironically good and funny
