Mauls lightsaber is far more practical because no matter what part of the "blade" you hit your opponent with, its deadly. The Thanos Blade has only one blade edge per side so if you hit them with the part of the blade without the edge, you're just giving them a bruise.

That's actually irrelevant. It's like that because someone thought it looked cool, whether you or I agree doesn't matter to why he has that weapon.

Hardly. 2018 Thanos was in complete control throughout the entirety of Infinity War, manipulating heroes to get what he wanted, and created a slick enough plan with enough intel that it didn't really matter when everything went balls up.

You could argue that 2014 Thanos was dumb, but his mistakes were mainly due to the arrogance of seeing his "future" self win, and thus seeing it as fate, rather than the result of a majority of outcomes. Even then, he manipulates 2014 Gamora to be more loyal than ever, he's shown to have been monitoring the Avengers for some time, and had 2014 Gamora not betrayed him, he would have got the stones. He ever shows cunning in his smaller acts, such as seperating the power stone from the Gauntlet to repel Carol, and using Thor's summoning of his weapons against him.

That being said, taking on a force that knows all about you, and that you know nothing on half of it, was not the brightest move.

The point of the sword is that only he can wield it. It would be impractical for someone else because Thanos is a master of the martial art that utilizes that weapon. He probably made that martial art as well.

funny thing with Thanos' double bladed sword is that the only thing that really blocked it's practicality from what I can tell is that there was only space on it for him to wield it single handed.

if there had been enough space both of his hands (plus a 'two hand' sized gap') it would have worked more since it would have allowed him to use it a little closer to a bladed staff.

Also, the other thing to remember about maul's lightsaber and lightsabers in general is t hat being laser blades means they fuck you up no matter how much force is applied, as long as it contacts and can get in deeper than a half inch on most of the body.
