Tangle has a fun powerset that actually works well for a Sonic character as she essentially has a werehog arm attached to her ass. In the theme of go fast she can slingshot herself and others to zip around.

1) I keep hearing conflicting reports in terms of mandates; either they’ve said that SEGA have been more lenient with Flynn and co. creatively in comparison to the Archie days or SEGA is super-invasive and goes full-ham on certain aspects

2) The size of the cast post-Generations is perfectly fine for a comic as long as the stories don’t get too big for them to handle but you will need to have original characters as a way to have the world react to what the game cast do and also be surrogates for the audience (which Tangle is supposed to be, but her execution falls rather flat)

I get what this guy is sayings. Both Tangle and Whisper are decent characters in terms of idea/concept, but what is shown hasn’t been enough to . I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: only giving them a spotlight issue and then a back-up role in the climax of the first season was a bad idea, they each should’ve gotten full arcs dedicated to them instead.

The former is what IDW has said, the latter is what fans have assumed due to Ian's issues and how they've been written. I'd lean towards the former being true given how the annual has some stories doing stuff Sega might have been iffy on before (a character going entirely off model for the sake of the story, Silver and Blaze's situations aren't quite as static and they're allowed to interact proper now) and the general laxing up on artistic depictions (Rouge is allowed to have cleavage now, for one thing).

I like her too. I just want her to get some nice stories under her belt, maybe get tossed around as a supporting character under some of the other writers to see who does her best.

"Two worlds" is something Sega itself only respects in the original context it was mentioned, IE "either it's all furries or all humans." I want a lot of these games and more to come back in some way myself, but the problem for so many of them is that gaming is just very different now, and it's hard to convince a big company like Sega to focus time on games that are either niche or look more like modern budget titles.

Classic is the most technically good games of the bunch. They're usually decently lacking of glitches and such and have very solid gameplay mechanics.

that's fair; I meant moreso in terms of aesthetics and setting rather than gameplay, but I imagine Classic's gameplay philosophy will start leaking into whatever other games end up coming out.
The problem with Sonic is that because each game ended up varying so wildly in terms of who it appeals to, there are hundreds of different types of fans with wildly different expectations and preferences for the series. Sega literally cannot please everyone; what I do think though is that eventually they'll start narrowing down what they want Sonic to be, and chances are that it'll be the style of Sonic that has the most goodwill behind it; that currently being Classic.
My prediction could be totally off-mark and I doubt this'll happen fast or soon anyway, but it's just what I see happening.

Classic gameplay forces you to earn speed as a reward by manipulating physics; 3D Sonic games all downplay the physics and momentum to varying degrees, and make "going fast" just a given. It's a cool character design, but I've always found prehensile tails/morphing limbs to be badass.
Really, a lot of the newer characters have pretty solid designs. I think the Sonic Comic style would work well for 2D animation and would shamelessly ape their design language if I were trying to make a webcomic.

I think its good to have OCs that are clearly actionable into the modern games.

I'm not against the SATam and other OCs but i never thought they really fit what the sonic games are. Really they would fit a game like Shining Force more than anything.

They absolutely 100% do not. I'm fond of SatAM characters because of nostalgia, but they come from a completely different school of design. I appreciate that Tangle is a character based on a gimmick that would have gameplay implications, and seems mostly in-line with the game canon cast.

The post-boot Freedom Fighters would probably fill out a beat-em-up or dynasty warriors roster pretty well.
If something were to actually use their ties to the kingdom instead of trying to write it off as quickly as humanly possible, it would shave off a lot of the discomfort towards their designs, since they would become 'stylistic' instead of 'outdated'.
That goes for personality as well as visuals. Giving them stable roles would do wonders for their likability in general.

The problem with that is Sonic games play fast and loose with canon. There is no static kingdom that we return to. In fact, there seems to be multiple takes on what the planet Sonic is on is even like, and it changes from game to game.

I think establishing something like the acorn kingdom is a good idea though. Having no anchor to past games hasn't proven to be a big boon to the franchise. In fact, it just confuses fans more than having some kind of timeline would. Just make sure you don't start establishing this solidified idea of Sonic's world while Pontac and Graff are still allowed to write the plots. Fuck them laying any kind of groundwork we'd be stuck with.

Poor Ian has been forced to reboot the continuity so many times at this point that I worry that he may automatically do so at the end of every major story arc now, as if by rote.

The setting of SatAM is incredible for its own kind of game. That SatAM game demo they showed off wasn't "Sonic" enough though. Stealth and waiting for enemies to pass is so slow. You probably could make a good Sonic game with stealth elements, but that demo looked really clunky.

I think it'll be up to fans to make a better proof of concept for how a SatAM game should play. I wonder if they ever will.

Well for the most part, the classic Mega Man cast is canonically dead in X timeline, being 200 or so years into the future or some shit. The "Classic era" before the Generations split was meant to be a mere few ~months before the events of Adventure 1 happened, with the character design change being only asthetic and mostly to spite American canon Sonic. So in threry, none of the classic game characters should be mia in the Modern era, because it's not some massive time gap between the two. Until as of the recent Sonic content, where Sonic Team staff decided to up and separate the classic era content from the Modern era content permanently, likely even to the point they're stopping the use of Classic Sonic in Modern Sonic games and just letting Taxman handle classic era stuff now.

Ultimately though, you're right, because this didn't matter since Heroes since Iizuka himself canned any and all other classic characters like Mighty and Ray into the "sealed chamber" and only brought back the Chaotix to just retcon their original appearance as non canon to "his work".

I can't think of a single comic where 100 issues of mediocre or bad writing lead to a meaningful payoff. Stuff like Daredevil and X-Men are better if you skip to the part where a good writer comes in, and very little of the old stuff even comes up.

Well it kinda helps that Reboot Archie started incorporating Unleashed, the game where Sonic goes on a world spanning adventure. Not to mention Reboot Archie already had Eggman on top, with his empire still intact. IDW has Eggman starting from Square one basically and has to establish every single new character.
