I recently watched the Japanese version of that episode and the only subtext between Sora and Tai was that they where good friends and Tai encouraging Sora to give Matt the cookies.

It's kinda hilarious how badly the dub portrayed certain emotional scenes.
For example the fight with Devimon, in the dub at the beginning of the fight Devimon was boastful proclaiming himself the ruler of all Digimon, in the Japanese version he only said that he no longer needed to fear anything once he killed T.K.

In the Japanese version all the Digimon threw themselves at Devimon in order to stop him only to delay him momentarily before being knocked out of commission. The dub added jokes to the lines of knocked out Digimons.

In the Japanese version when all the other Digimons had failed to stop Devimon, Patamon desperately attacked Devimon who didn't even flinch from the attacks, he then proceeded to lament the fact that he could do nothing and while crying wonder why he was the only one not able to evolve (all other Digimons had evolved by this point).
Finally as Devimons hand prepares to crush T.K. Patamon in desperation throws himself in front of his friend and Devimons hand close around him and for a short while there is silence.

In the dub all lines sound phoned in and it seems as if they are trying to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

In the Japanese version suddenly the sound of evolution is played and the theme also starts to play, suddenly bright light shines out from Devimons hand and he recoils, everyone looks in ave (at most speaking one short comment) as light envelopes Patamon and he begins to evolve and in even more ave as his adult form turns out to be Angemon.

In the dub they removed the evolution sound and unlike the Japanese version they don't repeat the same information as if they where talking with each other as if debating what they where seeing, T.K. also says the line "I want to take him home with me" out of nowhere.

In the Japanese version Angemon proclaims that Devimon has grown to powerful and that he will do what it takes to destroy him, there's also subtext that he regrets the sacrifices that must be maid as it will hurt T.K. but he steels himself to do it anyway because it must be done.

In the dub Angemon says he must defeat Devimon because of justice and most of the subtext is lost.

At the end of the battle when Angemon was fading away having used all his power to one-shot Devimon he turns to T.K. and says that they eventually will be reunited as long as T.K. holds on the the feeling of wanting to meet him again.

In the dub he says something similar but it comes out more like sure we can see each other again if you want to do that with the subtext that Angemon is all for it but unsure if T.K. wants to see him again.

Finally as for the characterization of Devimon.
In the Japanese version he's a powerful, charismatic and intelligent warlord attempting to conquer the digital world for the faction he's a part of.

In the dub he's a bully with a big stick, illusion of grandeur and some people doing what he says.

It sold way better than Frontier which didn't even crack the top 20. Tamers was at least in the top 3.

They hate both. Even the voice actors for Adventure hated Sora and Yamato getting together and spoke out against it in official interviews. Even Gabumon's voice actor thought it was bad and said it shouldn't have happened.

It doesn't matter which sold worse when they both sold bad. Certainly not well enough to justify an animated sequel to either. Digimon as a whole sells like garbage so they're clinging onto the best of a bad situation, aka Adventure. I don't know why the Franchise does so badly overall. It's like a zombie.

The world no longer cares about it. It was a product of it's time. Unlike Pokemon, it was unable to evolve (pun unintended) so it clings to whatever nostalgiafest is still left to dig out. It's why fucking Agumon and (sometime Gabumon) are shoved in all the fucking games.

Toei/Bandai definitely aren't agianst Lovecraftian a hit in Digimon. Most of the plots of the games read like something that Lovecraft himself might have cooked up whilst binging on an ungodly mixture between cocaine and all the LSD.

I like to imagine that if Digimon ever gets a live action movie for international audience, Bandai (and whatever sap company they partner with) will release it on the same fucking day as a Marvel film and waste all their advertisement money on social media, mostly twitter.

The Eaters are. The Demon Lords most certainly are, taking into account everything about them. And Zeed is pretty much the most well-known cosmic horror in the setting.

The Eaters are not at that level. Not at all. The worst we see them do is consume someone. The Demon Lords are treated like shit in the actual media. Every appearance from them is incredibly tame. Zeed barely does shit in the games and manga he appeared in.

Are those really that extreme to you? Because they come off as basic sci-fi villain and very vanilla occult to me. The writing of digimon games never go beyond the depth of your average LN.

Takato and Rika/Ruki was one of my favorite ships long time ago, sometimes I think that authors deliberately avoid the superior ships. Sorry for the other girl (I forgot her name) but Rika/Ruki is a better character. I think that it would have been the best romance in the whole saga.

They are not fucking compatible. Jesus I know the meme exists that "4channers" are virgins, but have you ever had a long term meaningful romantic relationship with any fucking human being? I can tell you right now that a girl like Ruki would tire of Takato real quick.

The Eaters are cross dimensional super impositions of the view point of multi-dimensional beings that exist on a non-congruent series of planes of existence, and their method of perceiving a world ends up incorporating the concept of consumption, and they end up incorporating everyone into a vast hivemind.

They had a bit of tension for sure, Takato had never known a girl that firey and strong willed, and Ruki never knew anyone that honest and determined.

There was chemistry there, but Takato and Juri is the true path no doubt about it.

The Eaters came a cunt's hair away from wiping out the entirety of the multiverse, thanks to Mother Eater having overwhelmed Yggdrasil, and everything was only set right in the end because they pretty much restored things to before the invasion happened. As for the Demon Lords, they're basically New Gods, with avatars in every reality, with all the other avatars growing vastly in power should one in another reality be destroyed. Facing them in any form wracks up 'karma' that corrupts you and can either turn you completely evil, or erase you from existence entirely, and the Dark Area (Digimon Hell) is an extension of their being, where souls condemned there go on to become "the flesh and blood of the Demon Lords."

Such is the threat of the Demon Lords, that come the ultimate and final battle between Good and Evil, Lucemon will emerge victorious and rewrite existence in its own twisted image forevermore as an unavoidable loss state.
