It's a Marvel day today, so we've got plenty of Kirby and Ditko. I meant to start a thread yesterday with some Charlton and Gold Key, but the places I get those comics from are being stupid, so I'll just post those next time I'm doing non-Big Two stuff.
As for the weekend, I've actually got quite a bit going on so there may not be as much New Eagle as any of us would like. Don't worry, that one nostalgic user, we'll get to 1988 soon. I promise.

This is one of Ditko's first truly masterful Spidey action sequences. From the great Dial B for Blog write-up series on the Ditko run:
>As far as I'm concerned, you could take the page BELOW, frame it, and hang it in any art gallery. It's is a masterpiece of design. Each panel stands on its own, but also works together with the other panels in its row, as well as the rest of the panels on the page.
>We start with a three-panel sequence. Doom's power-blasts lead the eye from panel one to two, and two to three. The wrist-motion begun in panel two results in the fist seen in panel three. Intertwining strands of "web" form a "web ball."
>Spidey tosses the ball at doom, following the trajectory of our eyes as we move down to the second tier of panels. Our eyes land on Doom's webbed hand, just as -- PLOP! -- Spidey's web ball does the same. Then Doom turns, pulling our eyes along with him. We're drawn to the next panel by a fusillade of web balls.
>Then, as our eyes move to the THIRD tier of panels, Spidey, in a sudden up-angle shot, senses danger up above. Not surprising, because Dr. Doom really is above him (in the second tier of panels).
>The final two panels act as a mini-animation sequence. In the middle panel, we see Spidey catch the ice, in the last panel, we see him escape it. Then the thrust of Spidey's ice-catcher propels our eyes upward, to the start of the next page.

I grew up reading Silver Age reprints of Ditko's Spidey, Iron Man, Daredevil, Avengers, X-Men and Captain America so this is my shit. I'm happy I had them when most of my friends had Ultimate Spider-Man and Batman: Hush. I wish I had F4 and Thor too. I went back and got all of Kirby's F4 years later but I still have never read his Thor.

Ah yes back when Spider Man was FAR more versatile with his web, and he fought far more cleverly. I never really found Spidey doing things like this absurd due to the fact that is noted early on that he could shoot out his web in 3 different thicknesses. Obviously masterful mixing of thick and thin web could allow for building pillars(interweaving thick and thin web), or even creating web balls (thick web for the center, and thin webs on the edges). Sadly these things get written out for being to "silly" or "situational"... I'll always see them as a testament to Peter's genius and quick thinking.
