For all intents and purposes, they pretty much are. Sure, they don't have the label of boyfriend and girlfriend, but their connection to each other is stronger than any childhood romance would be at that age. They've been through a lot together, have plenty of shared interests, are constantly learning and growing thanks to the other and most importantly love being together. But they're still kids and should just continue having fun without worrying about labels or what it means to be in a full-on relationship.
