They could use the name, but they couldn't actually use "Captain Marvel" for a comic book title. That's why it's always been "Thunderworld" or "The Power of Shazam".
They didn't give up on the scheme until after Marvel finally got a hit with making Carol their Captain Marvel, at which point DC finally decided to rename the character Shazam.

On the contrary, people do care. That's why they get mad when Superman is portrayed as any other thing that's not the boy scout who doesn't kill his foes and acts like an emo girl.
People cared (kinda) about Iron Man just for RDJ, because he was the character for 11 years. The same thing happened to Wolverine, people cared about Logan because Jackman was leaving after 17 years of portraying the character.
People get used to the actors, and they feel weird when the actors are gone. Cavill was Superman for just 2 movies, people can't be attached to an actor with that few movies. They had more emotions toward Tom Welling.
