Webcomics

When did the golden age of webcomics come to an end

They were so fucking comfy bros

What exactly would be the dividing trait for ages in this case, user?
Writing style? Restrictions? I legit don't know when or what you define as golden age or what makes it golden in comparison the age (or ages) that came right after.

>full house
you're so right

When Electric Retard stopped updating.

Attached: SUseason6.png (320x2704, 745K)

My nigga

Dude is a legit irl pedo tho

I thought this was the funniest shit when I was 13

And that's not snark, it really was hilarious then

Attached: 8bt.jpg (480x360, 22K)

Really? I thought that was just ED overreacting. Shit.

Actually that's where my intel comes from lel

I forgot not to take that place seriously

It never ended, the internet just so vast that they became harder and harder to find. Back in the 2000s and even the early 2010s there wasn't as much on the internet, so it was super easy to find pretty much every site worth visiting and by extension every webcomic worth reading.

>/pol/ posting Sexy Losers
>google it to find archive
>there's still a site
>one of the results is a blog from the author saying how the comic ruined his life and lost him all his friends

I'm sad now

They're still around. A lot of the old webcomics are still updating, and a lot of the creators have gone fulltime with it now that Patreon is a thing.

But now that webcomics are so easy and accepted, there's much less of a webcomic community of people interested in talking about them.

I've totally lost touch with them

Any good new ones people recommend?

Unironically, when Homestuck ended.

youtube.com/watch?v=e60JlM6ZXHc

The golden age is right fucking now. There's so much shit out there that you can just pick and choose whatever the hell you want. Yeah there's so much crap to sift through, but that's like half the fun

Lavender Jack.

The Man of Many Shades.

Scoob and Shag.

2007

I wouldn't say that the OG webcomics were a golden age because looking back on them they were mostly fucking shit

I'd say now with something like Ava's demons art style and writing, Homestucks being almost pop culture-tier in terms of popularity, and the fact you can make a living off webcomics with patreon I'd say we've officially entered the Golden Age of Webcomics as they've only gotten better
They've become more then just two dude's sitting on a couch making jokes about whatever video game they're playing or some whack fanfiction made by some anime fan or a fat lolifucking phillipino.
Hell even though the Two Dudes on a Couch gag webcomics is dying/dead gag strips still exists and have gotten much better and broaden their horizon

Was there actually a comic where this occurred?

Dude developed some issues as the years went by

Like what

Go look for it nigga

Weren't around for that when it was new? It was quite the surprise to say the least.

Fuck you, do it for me

Link?

Eat my feces

I read Ctrl-alt-del way back, before the miscarriage meme became a thing

I actually liked it back then, but it got shitty as it went along

I used to have a pretty good rotation of comics:
>8-bit Theatre
>Order of the Stick
>Chugworth Academy
>Ctrl-Alt-Del
>Sexy Losers (occasionally)

Think there were a few others too.

Plus the true king of webcomics, of course

Fucking this

and the currently running spinoff thing.

I can't guarantee that these are any good, but I found the artist by accidentally clicking on a youtube comment they made. The premises appear to be standard fantasy variants, but I was pleasantly surprised by the art, at least.

Although if I'm being honest, the most interesting part about my random find is her incredibly longstanding audio diary. I can't bring this up without sounding like a crazy person, but it's just so weird to me that someone is such an open book about their life. I suppose it's therapeutic, but I fear the kind of strangers who actually listen to it.

Attached: bap.jpg (300x300, 30K)

Fuck, this reminds me of some other one I read years ago

A fantasy one but I can't quite bring it to mind, I loved it at the time...

This should start you

no u

Shit, you got me there you double nigger

Unless you're hot shit talent, you can't do porn and expect it not to fuck up your professional life outside of said porn. See: Shadman, who devoted his life to drawing realistic child anus's and now he will never be able to get work.

>Waaaah I drew edgy porn and now people don't like me
The fuck did he expect?

I saw a few of the comics just now, but didn't do much reading. Did people really start falling out with him because his comics were about smutty stuff, or am I missing something?

>I read Ctrl-alt-del way back, before the miscarriage meme became a thing

I cringe when I look back when I used to read CAD when I was like 13 because actually felt really sad when I read Loss.

I don't even remember why I liked CAD so much too.

That's only if you're stupid enough to connect your irl persona to it

I feel like people are very aware of getting doxxed these days, but back in the web 1.0 days people had a sense that no one really knew about random crap on the internet, so nothing would get back to you about your edgy sex cartoons

Tbf, some of the Sexy Losers stuff is pretty tame compared to now. Furrys would have been a prime target for making fun of, but I'm honestly not sure if that even existed back in 2000 or whenever

It was about games I guess

Oh, I read VGCats too

Attached: vgcats.jpg (692x1753, 267K)

Yeah completely, its 100% his own dumb ass fault for not seperating business from 'pleasure'. It would be like wanting start a photography business but putting all your dick pics on your portfolio. Unless you are real hot shit talent, you have to hide being a degen.
>Furries in 2000
Furries have been a thing since the 80s, they became mostly degenerates in the 90s and by 2000s they were everywhere.

So what comics are you guys reading?
I'm following Lotta Svärd, SSSS and recently started binging Kiwi Blitz, Ava's Demon and Unsounded.
Picked those last two up because of Yea Forums.

It's still hilarious to this day.

It seems like retardo here sent a few of them to his mates for feedback and they weren't cool with him drawing mildly graphic sex comics with Yea Forums humour

I always thought they were pretty funny

>a fantasy one

Ah, yes, a nice narrow description will make this comic easy to find.

As a web comic normie, the only fantasy that comes to mind is Two-Kinds and Gaia. It's almost definitely not the comic you're looking for, but I thought I'd try anyway. And no, I don't read Two-Kinds, anymore

>8-bit Theatre at #76

I got into that after A Redtail's Dream.
My visited bookmarks include:
- Ava's Demon
- Vattu, but I've lost track of plot and need to re-read the whole chapter/volume
- Gunnerkirgg Court: complete chapters read better than update by update.
- Whomp! still has the odd funny strips
- Widdershins, light magic mystery set in pre-Victorian England
- Wondermark, pic related
- Oglaf
- The Property of Hate, read when each chapter completes.
- Bouletcorp
- The Non-Adventures of Wonderella
- Mare Internum, looks to be on permanent hiatus
- scarygoround, but appears John's fulltime doing print comics now
- Girls With Slingshots, the rerun
- Dilbert
- On a Sunbeam, I stopped at Chapter 3 due to too many others to read
- Lackadaisy
- Scurry, I recommend this, but no longer read

Oh right, forgot to mention I read that, I actually recommended it in a lot of threads a few years back. Seems to have hit a hiatus of sorts right now.

Anyone else read Feast For A King?

I sort my bookmarks into Frequent (consistently updates more than once per week), Infrequent (at most once per week, or on an inconsistent schedule), Finished (kept up with it until the end, or read it after it finished), and Hiatus (sigh).

I don't get it.

Attached: 1460008283369.jpg (250x238, 16K)

I don't mean to give ya crap but it feels like a clunkier version of a very similar negroid strip. It probably stuck around in the back your head even though you forgot about it, but it's the same premise and punchline.

‘member when Ava’s Demon actually updated and had passable writing?

Attached: 84EBFA95-F6BA-41DC-8EDA-D4FC1156D25C.jpg (600x374, 90K)

some update Moinday Wednesday Friday so folder "mwf" (Gunnerkrigg, Whomp!, Vattu), some Tuesdays and Thursdays so folder "tt", others Fridays so "f", and so on.
Hardly any webcomics are so consistent - I just counted 12 in all. That's only the ones I check.
Years ago I used to read Schlock Mercenary which has a rock solid daily update schedule for almost 19 years, that would go in a folder all its own "mtwtfss" for example.
The rest are in infrequent, ended, notreading.
pic related from an "unknown" schedule comic I had forgotten about: satwcomic.com/the-world

Ah shit I think you're right

Gotta expel that stuff from my brain

It's difficult. I know stand up comedians deal with the same problem. So much of what inspires you hangs around your conscience even though it's not readily accessible. I've done it a few times with character designs that I really liked. Arguably, it might be a good opportunity to reverse engineer the joke, see if you can break it down and build it back up in a way that creates a new premise.

I'm not a strip writer so I don't have the best advice on this sort of thing.

>sort my bookmarks
I just use rss

I think Homestuck is what killed it. Fucking EVERYONE started trying to be Homestuck, and even Homestuck couldn't sustain being Homestuck for more than like a year and a half.

Feels a bit like a different time too, the advent of streaming porn has made people a lot less easily distturbed by sexual content.

For example a titty popping out at the superbowl now would be a moment for sure but it would "change everything"

it wouldn't*

More game webcomic related, but still depressingly accurate. Just replace Penny Arcade with whatever big thing in the genre people were trying to rip off.
youtube.com/watch?v=5t4xS2PqFFA

I have a huge folder in my bookmarks of webcomics that I used to check nightly but have barely touched in a decade
One day I just didn't get around to it, then didn't bother the next either and bam

Same way I quit Hearthstone incidentally.

Oh yeah Archipelago! Loved seeing how the artist's style got so much better over time. She had a thing where she would link o other webcomics which is where I got most of my new ones from.

>that moment when i "discovered" rss feeds
Bless the creator of this holy tool.

>negroid
Lel

What exactly is that? I always see it mentioned but don't know how to do it.

>Newfags coming in
I am feeling nice today. rss is pretty much an updater for sites that tells you when new shit has been added or something has been updated.

Yeah, by keeping your irl identity separate from your pseudonym, hosting your own site and/or using Patreon you can pretty much avoid all the pitfalls this guy fell into. But it was a different time.

A lot of giants have ended, but there are still great smaller ones. It's a different feel now, since art standards have raised somewhat - sprite comics rarely get very popular, and early vgcats tier is now considered cringy by people who can't think for themselves.
My current favorites (disclaimer: I'm a huge fucking furry) off the top of my head:
>Savestate
>SatW
>Existential Comics
>Out-of-Placers
>xkcd
>Down the Hatch (this is actually just a vore comic though)
>Twokinds, mostly for Reni, Nora, and Mrs. Nibbly
Feel free to mock and deride, I threw my shame away shortly after finding this site seven or eight years ago.

Are there any furry webcomics out there that aren’t cringey?

Check Poppy, but that's Anthro not furry, since they're not just animals in normal modern society.

So is it a plugin or something?

Webcomics should be cringy as fuck. What's the fun of it if you can't go wild without an editor.

>Savestate
I remember seeing porn of it on e621.
>Twokinds
How can anyone read this garbage. The MC is so fucking boring.
The only furshit webcomics I read (they are quest) are Fen Quest and A town called coxweet.

Define the term. That's far too nebulous to get a half-decent answer; cringe thresholds vary in personal opinion and taste.

Cute dragons, honestly good art for a webcomic, and several of the secondary and tertiary characters make up for Trace's... whatever.

Attached: 20190328_064950.jpg (603x853, 281K)

I dunno. I guess something like the pic in
I should have rephrased my question into "are there any good anthro comics out there."

>what did I do wrong
>I don't have to tell, you know what you did
Kafkaesque

Sexy Losers was my favorite webcomic ;_;

>tfw will never know what happened to Galgy and Jeff and if they got their shit together after being defeated by the gang

>rss
Lel ded tech

The reboot of 'Alt+Ctrl+Del'
tolerate it, or hate it, that was the biggest webcomic out there.
Once it ended, it was an end of an era.
Also to, around that time, Newspapers were shutting down, so newspaper comics were becoming webcomics to survive.

>Are there any furry webcomics out there that aren’t cringey?
Latchkey kingdom is arguably furry and its pretty damn fun.

looked like housepets

Endtown.

There is still ten fucking years until this shit gets a propper ending
im half expecting it to end in a to be continued and its all been a ruse

i miss gunshow

What's Egoraptor doing on that cover?

Back then it was literally anyone making them, it didn't matter if it was shitty drawings/writting, but at the same time there were a lot of fresh ideas nad stuff you couldn't find on print comics. Now the standards have risen up, and the medium has been taken over by professionals/people that has actually gone to school to learn art, but that lack that originality/freshness.

haha oh shit, I swear that was unintentional. This is what I get for mocking /pol/ too much.

Order of the stick never really worked for me,
I mean it got a chuckle out of me, occasionally
But when it tried being serious it just came off as downright cringeworthy

i would literally spam f5 all day and post the update threads with all the pics when i was in college

that was 5 years ago

Attached: question asked by someone from the thread.jpg (720x1280, 103K)

Kiwiblitz is generally good for Monday updates..... generally...

Beyond that Dead Winter is pretty decent to read though it's only had 3 updates this year and 15 since Jan 2018.

Gunnerkrigg and Unsounded of course....

Harpy Gee is surprisingly good though it's what I'd generally consider childish and cutesy....

Stand Still Stay Silent is great, and Schlock is at least decent. I miss Brawl in the Family though.

That video update will be out any day now... any day.....

Attached: ava_blini.jpg (1124x1024, 500K)

Most of the good ones I've seen are pornographic since you'll never end up being stuck thinking "just fuck already" so that frees you up to just enjoy the parts between fucking.

Hey guys, remember Moon Over June?

Attached: 28937423894.png (1232x256, 448K)

yooo, did this finally conclude?

He mostly posts on his porn twitter, chibi-chaser, from what I can tell.

is it still being made

that shit was nasty

I don't know and I do not wish to find out.

Prequel is good but it only updates every ten years

You are on the internet right now. If you are not a complete fucking retard, googling rss will literally take you 2 clicks.

when social media got big
social media killed all independent creative art

It's pretty obvious you're defining this by when your own feelings about the medium shifted, and not by any external shift in storytelling, format or construction.

So tell us: when did the Golden Age end?

I unironically think that people should mob his convention panels for the cartoons he works on and just shout FINISH YOUR FUCKING WEBCOMIC, QUARTEY! over and over.

helvetica was cute, but, fittingly, it is now dead.

Attached: 2012-07-06-045.png (1200x700, 627K)

It was such a strange coincidence that this comic also featured a skeleton that just happened to be named after a font

Also? Whu?

I'm trying to catch up with Girl Genius, which I stopped reading years ago.

Despite the really generic name, it's a real fun take on mad scientists.

Pic related isn't really a spoiler or part of the main story, it's from a mini-sideshow story where they have a parody of the Cinderella story between chapters of the actual story, but the tone of it fits the comic as a whole.

Attached: ggmain20081205b[1].jpg (700x1054, 180K)

bit out of the loop, are we?

Attached: dqwdqw.png (225x225, 6K)

I interacted with Clay a bit back in the day, bought some advertising, not to victim blame, but a lot of his problems are self inflicted. He had a potentially good thing but he wasn't interested in pursuing it, and it's certainly the kind of creative venture that could bite you in the ass. I was doing internet porn at the time, it was easy money, but to this day not a single person knows - why take the risk? If he'd committed to the site and comic he could've made himself independent from real world job related problems but he didn't care for it. Even the Penny arcade guys got taken advantage of in the early days, but they learned from it and doubled down.

Of course hindsight is 20/20

sometime in the 2008-2012 period

That's not a webcomic.

And Sans isn't a font even though I know the retard intended for him to be named after one, "sans" is just a tag indicating that the font lacks serifs

The comedian, Sans, speaks in Comic Sans.

did it really end or did we just get too old for that shit?

Legacy means I picked these up 10+ years ago and it became routine to read them, so I never stopped. I couldn't even tell you what the fuck has happened in LFG for the last 10 years, I don't bother remembering.

I used to read Stand Still Stay Silent but it went on hiatus or something and I never picked it back up. I should really get back into it. The list of webcomics I've dropped is quite long though.

not a coincidence, the undertale skeletons are actually based on the comic

sounds like John Allison is done with internet comics. Bobbins.horse is gone, scarygoround is done. He's even wrapping up Giant Days with issue 55. I kind of wish it ended with Shelley's baby. now it just feels like it faded away

I fucking love oots. It was a fucking ride and I enjoyed every moment of it.
Durkon's battle with his vampiric self was amazing.

>Hasn't updated any of his quest recenty.
Does anybody knows why?

... LFG is still going?
That's insane...

>*raises hand in shame*

Visually, FFaK is interesting. The art can range form "doodle made by a child" to "very competent" and to "Lovecraft-ian horror" the next. Story-wise, it's all over the place. Which I get was the intention to tell the story out of order. And it's kept me hooked. But fuck me, it's hard to keep up!

Agreed.

I used to read so many webcomics back in the day like Perry Bible, Castle Vidcons, Dr Mcninja, Riceboy, Bleedman and Endling shit etc.

Can't believe I actually finished this.

I stopped reading that. How good has it gotten and why?

It still would. HBO and Cinemax already played light porn at 10:00. Every teen movie had at least two sets of tits in them. Puritan Americans have been pushing themselves onto everyone by being the loudest ducks in the room since the 80’s.

It’s gotten worse with time.

I still read several of them, though the ones I like the most seem to update slower and slower these days. Lawcomic, Lackadaisy, Dresden Codak (yes, I admit it), String Theory...

>I stopped reading that. How good has it gotten and why?

read the current page thread

Furries are eternal. Look at some old tiajuana Bibles and shit. They've been around since the dawn of man

Endtown wasn't too cringey (except for the occasional appearance by Marx), but goddamn if it hasn't degraded over time.

That was a shitty ending and left out 90% of the cast.

Girl genius is awesome. Even if there is a distinct dip in quality after the castle, there is something neat in every arc
>Timeskip and railways has based Martellus
>Paris has storm king stuff and geisterdamen
>Too early to truly speak about Britain, but it has whatever the temporal abomiantions are and Steffi
