Don't know about that, but it's an actual plot point in the issue where Ditko and Lee have Pete graduate high school that Peter won a golden ticket full scholarship to college and that everyone else was openly pissed off, because they either were too fucking poor to go to college or their parents had spent most of their teenage years, making them live as poor fags so they could save up just enough money to pay for college tuition, which only covered the actual classes and would require the kids to live at home still/have to get actual jobs to pay for books and help their parents stay afloat financially since every available dime would be going to their college cost.

This was back before student loans and colleges basically using student loans to basically admit ANYONE. Back in the early 60s, college was still a huge gated community where not only did you have to have good grades, you had to come from money because even if you didn't have good grades, you had to pay an arm and a leg to get in.

In those days, you either had to have 4.0 EVERYTHING and pray to god you win a full scholarship, or be a super jock and win a full scholarship that way. It's why a lot parents forced their kids in that era into the workplace, since parents couldn't always be counted on to be able to bankroll their kids college education and they had to have their kids chip in a huge chunk of it.

Basically if a person from grades 8-12 worked every summer during those years of their lives, and saved EVERY dollar they earn, they'd be able to pay for college.

The whole "College was cheap" meme isn't true. The people who said that college was cheap back then, either had their parents pay for everything (IE came from money) or were on scholarship/GI Bill and forgot all about how they actually PAID for college.
