You can reasonably expect most stories that revolve around themes of the good guys winning in the end aren't going to involve half of the heroes dying for good. We literally got this plot in the last movie, especially with Peter rejecting the Avengers membership and Stark's suit. Between this, GotG, and Ragnarok, it sucks that Infinity War/Endgame regressed a lot of characters and ongoing arcs.

Doesn't matter if something makes money if they can't use the IP to springboard more films, a DC/Marvel film needs to make money obviously, but more importantly it needs to make a positive name for the character.
Shazam might not have had massive numbers, but its got solid reviews, introduced people to the character and generated interest for Shazam 2, which will undoubtally make more.
Meanwhile Squad made more money but nobody wants to see Squad 2, so they have to reboot it and pray they get it right.
Another example, Sony's Spider-man films got progressively worse till they hit a point where nobody wanted to see that shit, they were STILL making money, but it was in Sony's interest to throw the rights to Marvel rather than letting the character die.
