It might be that Netflix is seeing if the show still has legs. It got its early viewing, if anything, because of the typical online controversy that produces an unhappy hatebase instead of a fanbase.

In spite of what the internet may lead you to believe, there aren't that many people who feel particularly strongly about gay characters. For most, seeings Bow's big gay dads is a bit of an eye-roller because so many other characters are already obviously gay. It mostly just made me wonder how people reproduce in Eternia. The stork? Your nether bits obviously don't have much to do with it.

Anyway, point is, after the show first launched, if you watched it you could clearly see there wasn't that much controversial material in it and there wasn't a lot to say about it all. So my guess is they launched seasons 1 and 1/2 to see if anyone would come back to it, and I'll be honest I nearly didn't.

I’m in the same boat. S1 was a bit of a snore fest and the narrative also seems really lackluster. Is S2 worth the watch for more of the bad girl trio?

For example, you can compare She-Ra to some of the other shows Netflix has been releasing. Generally a lot of their Western animation has been fairly underwhelming, and She-Ra is a good indicator that a short budget is a contributing factor. Crowds are expensive, so Eternia is practically empty, which makes the war with the Horde fall flat.

It worked great with Bojack, though. I think with a Sitcom where a lot of your jokes are verbal and there's very few action scenes, you can get by with a small budget thanks to having less work to do.

But with their Eastern originals, I notice they've been using a studio that's doing a lot with 3D rigs designed in a 2D style. Baki, High Score Girl, and a bunch of their other shows all seem to come from the same people. In some cases it looks like they're animated on threes, which is copy and horrible, but the advantage is that it seems like they're able to do a lot more action with way less budget because action can be less complicated to animate using 3D rigs.

Bottom line is, I guess I could see how you might come across as some sort of dumbass if all your knew about She-Ra is that the characters are gay, but there's actual business and a production strategy going on if you care. Heck, I think playing up the gay angle on She-Ra is just viral advertising anyway.

Korra moment, where two main leads get together at the very end. With little or no prior build-up.It has nothing to do with people being gay. It's a shit ending regardless.

The first episode is about a conflict between Glimmer and Frosta, but Frosta lost a few IQ points after joining the good guy team. The conflict is that Frosta won't stop hitting things and that makes Glimmer mad. It's not a good start.

But then it gets into Catra causing mischief, Shadow Weaver tricking Catra, and large Lobstra trying to ask Castra on a date.

Then there's an episode about Bow trying to hide from his gay dads that he's not just a scholar, but an applied scientist making high tech gadgets to uncover the historical secrets his dads scarcely understand. Somehow he's not able to spin it in a positive light until shenanigans happen. Kind of a nothing conflict that served no real point unless you wanted to know more about Bow - and I didn't.

I like that they leaned into making Imp more cute, rather than try and make him intimidating like a lot of fan reboots I've seen.
Giving him a baby face with demon eyes while playing up his malicious personality is way more unnerving than a generic gremlin look.

To be fair, she's pretty much the deuteragonist in terms of importance and focus.

Unfortunately, kids tv isn't at the point where they can show villainous protagonists unless it's a surreal comedy.

The stakes and threats aren't super high but the villains aren't useless, and definitley are the most interesting part of the show.
Animation is passable. I've seen worst but I wouldn't put it above a C+.

Writing is very drama-ish. Lot's of focus on emotional arcs and relationships.
But it's pretty plot focused. As far as I can remember there's some form of progress or world building in every episode, except that recent DnD one.

Again, I dig it because I like MG shows, but it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Considering how hateable she is, I'm glad they took the chance to flesh her out without setting her up for obvious redemption or making her a complete tragedy.

She's not visible in the top-down shot, but she appears in the background in one of the other shots in the same scene. Considering the empty space next to glimmer, it's possible that her removal was a decision made late into boarding, or something?
Maybe they did it because at this point in time, adora's supposed to believe she's dead - but the crew forgot to remove her silhouette from other shots.

In any case, she's there.

Which also makes it more interesting, because in the last episode of S1, it's stated that Entrapta does not have a runestone, she's not one of the "Elemental Princesses" who are connected to the planet as a whole. So, there's no reason for her to be there at all. Which I guess might be another reason for her being cut from the shot.

Bow is the gay best friend, Mermista is the valley girl, Perfuma the green thumb. This is why they change Frosta's personality. They just swapped out one archetype for another. Because, they're lazy.
For whatever reason, they're less lazy when it comes to writing the horde.

This, mostly. With the bad guys, you can write them doing more dynamic things and can be free in their actions. As you said, good guys can only be good. They are stuck being that way, and the writers wrote them to be paragons of their society and be right and just in the face of evil. With the Horde at least, you got some intriguing characters who seem to be more than what's said on the tin. Also, they can grow to become good, or grow to become even more evil and everything in-between.

conflict makes for more engaging viewing.

The Horde is in conflict with the Rebellion, but also with itself.

Action scenes are not what it does well. They exist, but they aren't what's noteworthy about the episodes. I suppose people could make webms of some of the more dramatic scenes, but since they'd lack context it would probably just serve to cheapen them.

While the action isn't Avatar levels of well choreographed, the direction and shot composition of fights, and the animation and movement of the characters themselves, is rock-solid. I'd say it's comparable to Ben 10 or Generator Rex (Neither which blew me away, but were very serviceable). It's a step up from something like Steven Universe, that's for sure.

yes they are, if those where smaller figurines for like 10 bucks maybe (cheap SW figures style) but those cost like... 50? with only 5 POA it is pure madness... the articulation design can even be better I just want decent looking PVC figurines I know we will never have decent articulated figures of them but I want at least to have something that looks like the characters without spend 30-50 dolarios on 5 inch 5-6 POA figures, hell I think they are not even regular toy store releases... those figures have all the drawbacks of collector figures without it's virtues...

Instead of her fighting The Horde using a little from everyone, people were slaughtered en masse because a spell looked too spooky.
