I think one thing that is an issue with this series is.

1. How many of the superheroes are incompetent (with or without powers)
and 2. We pretty much never spend any comic time focus on them actually doing heroics.

We saw A-Train fight one supervillain at the beginning of the series and maybe 2-4 other times even moving at superspeed.
It's a like 90 issue series. Invest just a tiny bit more time showing The Seven flying off after beating a monster. Or showing Homelander deal with some masked normie who is wanting to be a supervillain get instantly killed by a super-sneeze.

We just end up with a series where our heroes all are more powerful and 10x more organized than all these people who their literal just is to simply be super powerful. How is it you have triple digit supes and none train to make their power a legit threat.

I mean it's Ennis's formula. He starts with silly raunchy nonsense, have a "shits about to get real" moment or two, and then hit you hard with some drama with characters you're invested in now as we get more and more drama focused.
But DAMN if it still works on me even when I know it's coming.

This always seemed the case for me. In what instances would superpowers be needed unless you were up against someone else with superpowers? V.A. pretty much made these superheroes with no legitimate plan to use them and then tried to fit them in where we already had emergency services and national defense forces.

When I read this for the first time I was only going to go through a couple of issues to see how edgy it was. I ended up reading the whole run in one sitting, and by the end I was shocked at how much I cared about the characters in a comic with the premise "What if every superhero was a giant dick".
