It was never very huge. It never reached Phineas and Ferb or Gravity Falls fame, But did do better than Kick Buttowski and Randy Cunningham.

Not really, Rhombulus admited to have staged everything so Globgor could kill the audience (their families) and prove his propaganda to be true.

Tomstar was the relationship that was actually forced. They've had plenty of reason to break up for quite some time, they just always swept it under the rug because it was easier to ignore the problems than face them.

Not to mention that them getting together in the first place was largely out of convenience. Tom by coincidence just happened to be in the right time and place when Star was desperately trying to move on from her seemingly unrequited feelings for Marco. If that Silver Bell Ball had happened like a month later, after Marco had already broken up with Jackie and come to Mewni, Tomstar 2.0 never would've happened. It also never would've happened if Tom hadn't been aware of the actual situation between Star and Marco, and they'd just had a cursory dance instead of Tom going out of his way to avoid her which forced them to actually talk and thus end up reconciling.

Personally I think Nefcy only planned for the show to get three seasons (like pretty much every Disney cartoon has since the 2000s) and when she got blindsided by the order for season 4 she was forced to push everything back, and tried to fill in the extra space by letting Contungo take over writing episodes.
I mean, season 3 was set up perfectly at the start (epic battle, clear path for Starco, endgame with Eclipsa and Meteora clearly laid out) and then Club Snubbed aired and it was all downhill from there.
