The truly sad thing is: How damaged by ideology do you have to be to think that this kind of art is better?
The people that make this sort of thing have been twisted to a degree that'd fit in Orwells vision of 1984, where ugly is beautiful and beautiful is ugly.

I'm actually okay with some "Tumblr art". As a matter of principle I hate the notion that all art must be pretty. It's part of the reason why I love Ren and Stimpy, Flapjack, and Spongebob so much. Ugly characters can be fun. Furthermore, I think "uglier" designs can also make more sense than "prettier" ones.

Take Poison Ivy for example. I sort of hate when she's drawn with a perfectly flat tummy and perky tits. To me, it makes more sense for a sensual, Earthy character to be more Rubenesque. Body hair makes sense to me too. Does the lady at the flea market shave her legs? No? Then why would the literal ecoterrorist?

However, I see comments from people in threads like these demanding that things "look pretty", and that irritates me too. The adherence to thinks always looking comventionally attractive puts serious limitations on art. You lose the ability to make cartoons as funny as they could possibly be, or to articulate key personality traits of the characters. I find this especially true of female characters. Sure, there definitely are some femme fatales and pretty girls-next-door in comics, but there is also an overabundance of super hot conventionally attractive women where there should be ugly chicks, unusual-but-still-hot chicks, average chicks, etc.

Vitiligo is an exotic, highly visible, but mostly harmless (aside from psychological issues) disease. It's a cheap and easy way to give your character "uniqueness", just like a weird hair style, heterochromia or birthmarks.

What bugs me is that none of those artists get vitiligo right. It does not manifest as completely random patches of de-pigmented skin; it's either near-symmetrical, or it affects only one half of the body.
