Previously, the only people that really talked about Yea Forums were Yea Forumstards, so they would invite their friends to Yea Forums, and thus Yea Forums became the landing board for all newfags. Eventually people would tire of the board, or just get curious enough to find something else, and migrate elsewhere. During that time, they learned how Yea Forums worked. Once it hit the news around the time of Chanology, though, people just started looking at everything. Nobody understood a thing, and the concept being a snarky contrarian simply for the sake of doing so took hold, because that's what Yea Forums looked like on the surface to newnewfags. Personally, I also think the creation of too many new boards drew people away from Yea Forums, which reduced it to really having no purpose.

Now Yea Forums is predominantly shitposting and bait threads with people desperately trying to dislike everything they can, mixed with companies trying to low-key advertise here (/g/ got it REALLY bad back when Windows 10 was launching).
