Well since JJ is back at the helm they're going back into full nostalgia baiting, but because they already used up a bunch on Episode 7, and because TLJ fucked up so bad, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel. Thats why they're bringing back Palpatine, but also Lando, Death Star debris, and the medals from Episode 4s ending even though none of this makes narrative sense.
I also love how JJ is apparently just pretending that Rian Johnson made a hopeful nostalgia bait like he did with TFA, because in the trailer alone we hear Luke, who is dead, going on about how he taught her everything he knows and trusts her, even though he didn't want to train her in TLJ, barely trained her at all, and then said he only did it to show her why the Jedi must end etc.
