It must've been a relief to see that their friend was still safe, alive, and right there. And since they were the same age, they knew they were currently struggling with the same issues; they both had faced death just a short moment ago from their viewpoint, and now they were completely out of the loop on everything while the world had moved on without them.
A lot of other kids suddenly had awkward age gaps separating them from their best friends. But Peter and Ned still had each other, and they both knew exactly what the other went through. That would be comforting in such a situation, and it makes sense to get emotional over it.

Honestly, as someone who is really detailed orientated, most of the movies that come out bow a days are offensive in how badly they are written. Last movie I enjoyed going to watch in the theater was Pacific Rim.
